UPDATE (Hallelujah) Rug for Back/Garage Entry into house

last modified: 2 years ago

This is a small hallway leading from garage into the house. When you walk in , immediately to your left is a powder room; immediately to your front is the closet, and to your right is a side by side cabinet.

We use the garage entry a lot and we do need a rug/mat there. I have some temporary bath mats there but it's really getting old and sorry looking.

The individual one is like 2 by 3. I was thinking if I got a 2 by 4, that might work and keep the rug right up to the door.

Then I was wondering if perhaps I got a runner ( 5 foot? 6 foot?) and had it a bit out in front of the door and ran parallel to the side by side.

Now I am good and confused.

This works, but I think it would be better if larger?

Ha! I think I just answered my own question. I think 2 or 3 by 4 is the way to go.

That helps limit the endless selections.

I have had my eyes on this one and may just try it.

I also like this one but not sure if it's too turquoise. They are so inexpensive I don't know why I can't pull the trigger.

In picture #1, the door rug looks tiny. And way too light-colored. For me anyway.

    At my kitchen-to-garage door, I have a 5’ x 2’ runner. Black.

That seems tiny for an entry rug...where do you stand to close the door?

We had a 4x6 in both entries. Was a nice size so we didn't step on the floors with dirty/wet/snowy shoes.

I like your rug choices. I agree about going bigger.

Ignore this color, I just grabbed it for a size mock-up:

I have to tell you this was therapeutic for me! I had been deliberating and not taking action. When I wrote the post, it helped motivate me to order and try it out. I am ordering from HD so if I need to return, it's easy.

I agree 2 by 3 is too small. When I search for 2 by 4 or 3 by 4 for example, it still brings up all sorts of other close but not quite sizes.

So I do think that 2 by 4 should be good. I hesitated because of the light background, but the rug is all of $26 !!!

At one point I had a thicker rug there (it was also on tile) which fought with the closet door opening so it's just not optimal.

Anyway I am excited at least to get started with this. The house is coming together and when I walk in from the garage it's very disappointing to have those bath rugs there.

well, to their credit I ordered yesterday and got one today already. Way to go Home Depot!

It's ok, but really not loving it. I mostly cannot get over how different it looks in real life.

It is attractive, but just so different f rom the picture on the website. It's basically blue and ivory. On the website there were other shades of blue and taupe.

I will probably return it and continue looking

oh well. Size wise I could certainly go larger just need to be able to open the closet door directly opposite. oh well.

Thank you- spent some time looking and I really like those but I cannot have the vinyl backing as I have LVP.

I have been looking at these and wonder what anyone thinks?

This comes in 2 by 4 (which is what is there now), as well as 3 by 4 or 3 by 5. A little concerned that it might be too thick....but what do you think?

@salonva I’m not clear on size of floorspace but would a 4’ or 5’ round work? I think the shape might be nice for the space.

I flipped the rug so the 4 foot was perpendicular to the door to see if a round rug could work and it cannot. It would go right up to the closet door and depending on how deep it can impede opening the door.

Meant to add the rug there is 2 by 4.

I have similar need between garage narrow laundry room. I keep several on hand due to constant laundering and have been able to find short runners at Home Goods or Tuesday Morning. Rugs look more proportional when not butted up to the door.

The purpose of a mat at entry doors is to minimize water, mud and debris from entering the home. Less tracked in the better off your flooring will be. I recommend a Waterhog mat (available from manufacturer and online retailers.) They may not be cute but they will serve the purpose superbly. They do come in colors and designs. My family room LVT flooring was what made me look for this solution.

perhaps taking off your shoes in the garage before coming into the house would solve the problem?

or, you could do some black slate tile (or a porcelain tile) inlaid into the wood flooring.

then just have a little shoe stand or mat to place your shoes upon entry.

This is not the front door or main entry , but the entrance we ( DH and I) use most so I just want it to be functional but attractive. We do have shoe racks and mats in the garage but it's really not a spacious garage . I just want the rug/mat to be pretty and be an additional space to step out the mud/leaves. The flooring is LVP which was just installed over the summer. While the examples with the slate and tile are lovely, they just wouldn't work in this area. The waterhog ones would make sense in the garage or outside the front door. Again, for LVP I believe the latex or rubber backing is not to be used.

When you come in through the front door, there is a foyer and then continued along is this hallway which you do see if you are entering either the kitchen or the dining/living room. It is also on the route (lol) to the powder room so it's visible.

The rug that is currently there is definitely better than the bath mats that were there- and I am pretty sure I will be returning it. I would love to find something that would just be "right". I wonder if I should look for a darker rug.

This is what we have at the front door.... I don't even remember where I got it from as it moved from the last house and I believe I bought it probably about 15 years ago. And you can see the shoes laying there. Pardon my foot. I took this just after install. :)

I still kept that rug at the back door but like it less and less. (DH said it was ok to keep but he didn't think it was much better than the bath mat I had there previously...). So the second one came yesterday and we both really like the color and print and all for our house. I am showing you a picture of it. I think it's too small but now I wonder. It does not come in another size that would possibly work for the back door. Do you think it looks dumb? (size wise).

The ends are still curling up but obviously I will work on it. W

    What do you think?

And Beth, I previously thought I could not have a bench in the garage but I am exploring that option. I think it might work. So this would just be to absorb a touch more of the junk that makes it through the garage and onto the first steps into the house.

I like the new rug pattern and color but WAY too small. For a busy entry like this you need a big one, at least 24” x 48.” I prefer 30” x 60”.

You need space for either: 1. shoes to be taken off and left on the rug or 2. room to take 3-4 steps ON the rug to dry/wipe your shoes while you proceed into the house.

I think that is too small, it almost looks like a placemat. sorry :( If even just 6 inches wider on each side that would be better. What size is that?

No worries I am not offended. So many rugs come in so many sizes and of course for this last one, the next size is 2 by 6 which just will not work. ( there is a wall and furniture. I guess back to the drawing board. This one is supposed to be 2 by 3 but was skimpy ( so like 23 by 35).

The first one I got was 2 by 4..

I think I could go with 2 by 5 and if not too thick. potentially 3 by 5 but I honestly think that is too big.

    I appreciate your comments.
