Need quick decision on paint color for beige tile bathroom

I’m painting my son’s bathroom while I’m visiting (he just bought his first home with his GF). It’s a bit tricky bc there are 2 iterations of ”beige tile”, not much natural light, and black cabinetry. Current situation:

Another view of shower tile:

cabinet and floor:

Floor:

They were hoping for blue…mmm…I was trying to steer them to a neutral. There’s a bit of gray-blue in the shower tile. Maybe a pale gray with a teeny bit of blue? I wanted to pull a pale beige from the tile and keep everything neutral, then get a colorful patterned shower curtain to distract from the sea of beige.

We are going to grab some Ben Moore samples this evening. Anyone want to throw out some colors to try?

Sue, I was inspired by Pal's post. Perhaps a teal blue ceiling and teal blue bathmat along with a light wall and her tropical shower curtain?

Hm yeah, I’m not painting the ceiling. LOL. Seriously though, I have a wonky shoulder so overhead work isn’t happening. But yes, I was thinking teal towels/rug with that shower curtain.

Thanks all! I ended up getting Natural Wicker for the walls. Very close to Muslin but we liked it just a hair better.

I had such a nice time today shopping along Magazine Street. Someone suggested the particular area of Magazine in my earlier Nola query, can’t remember who but it was a good tip! Tomorrow we’re doing a swamp tour and some other touristy stuff. I was on my own today while the ”kids” were at work.

    Also bonding with my granddog.

Love the idea of a teal blue ceiling, beautiful with the shower curtain.

Agree cawaps, but I still think that if I wanted that for my first house and someone talked me out of it in preference for something more sedate, I would always wonder and possibly regret not giving my choice a try. Experience can take away a lot of joy from our children. This is not meant as a criticism really, just a thought. When I think back on the many decorating 'mistakes' (inexperience, youthful exuberance, whatever) I made, I never really regret them. Some are even good for a laugh.

Yeah, my MIL would have probably thought painting my kitchen chartreuse was a horrible mistake, but I still love it after 11 years. Not that I was by any means a youngster when I chose the chartreuse.

WHo else was expecting the bathroom to be completely painted and accessorized by this time? I mean, it's been a day. Poor SueB, if she goes at a normal person's re-do pace--we're all sitting here tapping our collective feet.

A thought about the exterior - You can explain that exterior colours wash out compared to the chip so she may have to go a shade or two darker than she anticipated to get the effect she wants.

I also Google exterior paint colors to look for houses in those colors.

    Another NOLA house

Faubourg Marigny is known for being very bohemian. Is that the section of NOLA they are living in?

No, they’re in the Broadmoor area. Not the most colorful neighborhood. They keep changing their minds about what they want. Current thought is a stained wood door (they’re getting a new front door) and a blue like this.

We still haven’t opened the samples we got the other day. We played tourists all day today.

Out of those samples my choice would be second from left HC 152.

    Love the middle color.

Would they be amenable to going with a darker blue, like the picture above from Faubourg Marigny, especially if they are going for the pink door? If not, I’d vote for HC151 or 839

    Sueb20 thanked bbstx

Here are some pink doors from IG. Looks like the houses have a gray undertone.

    Sueb20 thanked bbstx

Nope, no dark, and not too gray. I’m with you, bb, but the homeowners are not. We like HC 152 (Whipple Blue, which is fun to say) and at this point, the door is going to be unpainted wood, not pink, but the decisions change a lot around here.

If we had not done the above exercise, she would have picked 769 from the chip at the store.

HC 151 next would be either next to H 151 but definitely not the two on the far right or far left.

My vote is the same as bbstx: 151 or 839, but I do prefer a darker blue. Sounds like you're doing a good balancing act with helping, but being able to go with the flow.

    My order of preference

    151

    839

    152

    774

and a big no to 769

However, it would be helpful to see the house as it it now, and the neighborhood.

To me the color choice would depend somewhat on the size and style of the house. Generally I like large homes in the darker picks and small homes in the brighter cheery picks. I like ranch styles in pale blues. The exceptions to that thinking would be homes with a lot of detail regardless of size,.

It's tough. I think 151 and 152 feel too Colonial.

Maybe another color on the strip with 774.

I would find a house I like, do a color capture, and then try versions of the result

Well I’m leaving tomorrow so they’ll be making the final decision without me. I don’t feel right posting pics of their actual house, but it’s pretty tiny with a small front porch, like a cottage. One story. The houses all around them are pretty basic, neutral colors. They also plan to be here less than 5 yrs so resale is a factor. That’s the main reason to avoid a crazy color scheme IMO.

The pic I posted was taken at dusk. I haven’t gone out yet to see how the colors look in brighter light.

Looks great! I think the previous owner was trying to keep it stylish, but as someone mentioned upthread, the beige of the tiles just doesn't match or go with hardly anything. I was awaiting an after photo and you exceeded my expectation :-)

Nice work Sue!! You have such a great eye. I am sure you were biting your tongue with certain decisions. You are kind to go and help them.

Seems it would be odd if all of the homes are neutral and they painted theirs a crazy bright blue. I love color especially in certain areas like NOLA.

    Keep us posted!!

Totally understand about not posting pics of their actual house. I'd be interested in what the other homes in the neighborhood look like. And how the color would fit in.

I think blue is the one color people are forgiven for if busting out of the neighborhood neutral exterior mode. Little houses get away with much.

I don’t think there is any worry about painting a house a color in NOLA. Colorful houses are not unusual regardless of the neighborhood. This screenshot is a random two rows from realtor.com without any neighborhood specified.

The BA turned out so nice, SueB. Your gentle guidance was invaluable.

I love Pal's observation that these neutral colors "only go with each other."

Thanks! it just looks so much CLEANER too. That muddy dark purple was just icky.

It was fun to help and to spend extra time with my 26 yo ”kid” and his girlfriend, who I’m 98% sure will be my DIL one day. Their dynamic is sooo similar to DH and me, it’s crazy. However, I was also happy to leave today and let them finish the rest of the unpacking themselves!

Tell us what all you did! Did you make it to Cafe du Monde for beignets and cafe au lait? Out the the Camellia Grill for an omelet one morning? Down to Acme or Felix’s for oysters? Over to Johnny Sanchez for some upscale Mexican fusion? Maybe one of Emeril’s places? Did you have time for the WWII museum? The Mardi Gras float museum?

    LOL none of the above.

    -Superior Seafood for dinner

    -Mulate’s for dinner and music

-Mahony’s for po boys for lunch

    -The Vintage for a drink

    -Magazine St shopping

    -swamp tour

    -garden district tour

-walked around French Mkt and quickly down Bourbon St.

Cafe du Monde line was down the street so we skipped it.

Sounds like a great time! I prefer Cafe du Monde in the early morning hours. There’ll still be a line, but it is shorter. XH’s firm had an apartment in the Quarter. He would get up at the crack of dawn and go get us beignets. That was nice!

I’m sure you’ll make other trips to NOLA. There will be something new and different to do each trip!
