How Would You Furnish this Side-By-Side Living Room and Family Room?

I would appreciate any thoughts. My living room is about 11 x 20. I would place the couch and coffee table under the bay window across from the fireplace, and put two upholstered chairs and side table under the high windows on the short wall on the left side.

The family room is 13 x 23. I think the TV has to go on the wall without windows. The family room is open to the living room and open to the kitchen. I cannot visualize a good layout for the remainder of this room.

(There is about a 10’ opening between the living room and family room) and another 10’ opening into the kitchen. Any ideas? Thank you!

Is this a new build? A remodel? I will hope not a new build.

What the purpose of each room? Is one formal "no one really allowed in" or are they used daily by those in the home (see above questions)? If I purchased this home I would use one as a games room/pool table, ping pong , office area.....I do not see the necessity of two such rooms in the average home.

Does the space labeled Family Room have to be that? Can or would you use it as the dining room, and the space beyond the kitchen as the family room? (It looks like the family room used to be the dining, and the dining room is an addition. Is this a mid-century home?)

I agree with @bpath. I would switch dining and family rooms, a little separation would help you utilize those spaces better.

Thanks for trying to help. I will answer your questions which also helps me to think it through:

    • no children, but visiting grandchildren.
-it is not a new build, but a remodel of a 50’s ranch. The addition is the covered porch and the extension of the kitchen.
-our “games room” (ping pong) will be in the finished basement.
-my sense is that the family room is less formal than the living room and will be for relaxation and TV watching. Maybe incorporating a desk.
-I could switch the family and dining but it would be an awfully large dining room that wouldn’t get much use as it’s just 2 of us most of the time. The addition will have large windows across the back. Lots more light than the room now labeled family. Planning a bench under the windows. Plus the new kitchen/dining will have a different floor from the rest of the house.

If this helps and you have other ideas please share. Thanks again.

Will you have windows to the covered porch from the family room?

I think I'd place a sofa under the front-facing window, with the tv opposite. Or, perhaps two love seats making an L (how often do three people sit on a sofa?). To the right, perhaps the second love seat with a console table behind it, to define the space.

I think you'd like a table and chairs there, for doing paperwork, puzzles, games, or casual meals when a good movie is on tv.

I've always liked this photo of an intimate fireside dining space. You could scale it for the two of you, using a drop leaf table to expand for guests. Some comfy armchairs and a banquette could flesh out the room, still putting seating in the bay and on the west wall. Here a pair of upholstered stools can be pulled up to the table for dining. I would treat the dining room in the back as a sunroom attached to the covered porch. They could both be furnished with a mix of indoor/outdoor furniture using Sunbrella fabrics, which are now finding many applications as interior upholstery. Then treat the family room as the TV space. A "U" of sofa and swivel chairs will work well there with TV on the "north" wall on your plan.

Thank you. Great ideas. Maybe a small round table and 2 chairs in the space between the family room and kitchen for “table” activities rather than a desk. I like the idea of an L facing the TV.

I’m now thinking of something a little different and would love feedback.
The living room is unchanged. The family room, however, could be for dual purpose. A TV end by the windows with a Media unit on the back wall and a loveseat or small sectional across from it. The rest of that room could be a dining room, with possibly a round dining table. Then what I have labeled dining in the plans becomes a breakfast room or the kitchen would be an eat-in kitchen. This will give me a more spacious work kitchen and I won’t feel that I’m crowding everything in. Here is a sketch. Thanks for any comments.
