Did you consider lighted mirrors (the perimeter of the mirror is lit)? You would probably still need supplimental overhead lighting.

Okay, here comes a photo of an embarrassing mess... I had water damage in the ceiling that flowed behind the medicine cabinet which is why I'm ripping everything out. Medicine cabinet has already been ordered, FWIW. It will be shorter and narrower than the existing one, but wider than the central section of the existing one.

The proposed lights will placed too far forward, shine downwards, and cast harsh shadows on your face. Since you are removing the old medicine cabinet, now is the time to rewire the room so you can place a sconce on each side of the medicine cabinet. The wall behind the medicine cabinet may need repair anyway. Pushing some Romex down the wall and adding two "old work" electrical boxes would not be that hard.

Why is the proposed medicine cabinet not painted wood like the vanity?

I don't have rewiring written into the scope with the contractor and frankly I am trying not to be a pest since it is near impossible to get on anyone's schedule in my city at the moment, even with the nasty damage I'm dealing with. So I was trying to keep this simple if possible. If not possible, then yeah, I can ask him about rewiring.

Thanks RL... we've come full circle to what I was originally looking for, a "bath bar" kind of style but one that sticks out a lot. That's essentially what the current Hollywood style one in my ugly picture is. I just couldn't find any websites that would allow you to facet or sort on that dimension. How did you find these, or did you just know? This bathroom is the only modernish room in my little old house, so I'd be looking for a silver-tone (chrome/nickel) in a modern to transitional style (I think).

No, her medicine cabinet is only 20" wide; a sconce on the hinge side would not prevent the medicine cabinet door from opening. Two sconces would eliminate any shadow that could be caused by one light alone. All these lights, for example, have a depth of about 5" though I think two shallower lights could work:
