Dreaming of Spring - How are you bringing touches of spring to winter?
Comments (11)I've grown moonflowers before and had great success scarifying them by breaking the seed coat with a sharp knife and keeping them wet between several layers of paper towels. I have a major in finance and a minor in forestry, lol, and we've grown pine and hardwood seedlings from seeds that were scarified in sand in my refridgerator for six months, then planted in seed beds for two years, then heeled in in my back yard. A long, long time ago my husband( a professional forestry consultant) and I planted five acres in pine seedlings in freezing water up to my knees when I was six months pregnant for $50.00. We were young and needed grocery money!...See MoreWhat's on your November to-do list?
Comments (40)The windows are washed and DH has the yard raked for about the 12th time, the gardens are cleaned and over 300 tulip bulbs and some hyacinth bulbs are planted. All the hardscape is in and protected, as are the potted plants I am overwintering. Now, I just need to cover the roses, mums and hydrangea for the hard winter ahead. It's a good thing, cuz we are suppose to get our first snow early - on Mon. Whoops! I best get some firewood this weekend. Jean, you must be the upper Midwest too. I too want to get some of my outdoor lights up this weekend or it may be too late. Make sure I have enough checks for the Gifts. Yes, we are old and shop for only one gift each for the daughters and grands. So I am ignoring Christmas for now, since I have already made reservations for several of my groups. In the meantime, we will make plans to host our small family for Thanksgiving. The house is ready, since I still entertain some every month and keep it pretty much cleaned and in order. I do plan to clean the fridge good tho and steam the packed carpet where I moved furniture in the study. I plan to do some more closet purging. I still need to place some on line orders for some accent tables and table lamps for the living room I am nearing completion. I may paint an accent wall in the study - I know they are of style, but it is my house. I have begun putting out the winter linens and we are already enjoying the cozy throws. Besides the holidays, I have our maintenance guy coming to clean gutters and the contractor to measure for additional bookshelves and our geek to work on the computers. I am also trying to decide whether I want a recliner or a love seat in the study, new/reupholstered furniture in the conservatory, kitchen and family room. I selected the curtain fabric and must get those made am trying to select an area rug, seating and maybe a table and shelves with casters for use beside my computer. Until I can get all our workers going, I am cleaning out files and shelves, so I know what additional space I might need. Oh yes, I used to do an enormous amount of decorating, so I started putting out a lot less last year. So this year I want to be very thoughtful about which I put out, so I can rotate my favs and photograph those each year, put them in an album on the coffee table during the holiday, so we can look at them, enjoy and remember. Sorry about the length of this. I tried to get it all down together to keep me on target. Happy holidays to all of you. jan...See MoreWhat's on your December to-do list?
Comments (41)I am one of those who LOVE the holidays. On Thanksgiving eve, after we've prepped our Turkey Day dinner and had pizza for supper, my little girl and I put up our tree. This year we put up a 7 1/2' slender one because the big one is packed for our move. I am pretty much done packing the stuff the movers will take on Tuesday, Dec. 9th. Then it's off to the Parent/Teacher conference. On Wed. is my mammo, and Thurs. we fly out on a 2 week vacation to our new city to do a variety of things like see our new house that's being finished (hopefully) this week, meet the movers, put up the big tree, unpack some things, check out my daughter's new school and find out what they need for her to transfer there, find out where the nearest grocery store might be, get bank accounts started, electric, gas, etc. I have a few Holiday cards to get written and sent out in the next couple of days, but I am not baking this year due to the move (usually do about 1000 gingerbread boys). My daughter is a little upset about this because she won't get to decorate a cookie for Santa . . . but then she knows now that each of us is Santa in our own way (she confessed to planning to stay awake to sneak out and eat the cookie so I would think Santa had come!). When we get back to our current home, we'll have about 5 weeks of work, packing last minute stuff, cleaning the rental and turning over the keys . . . but that's into January and you only wanted December! Happy Holidays Everyone!...See MoreWhat's your Bathroom remodel wish list for 2016?
Comments (117)We are giving ourselves the gift of a new organized closet and bathroom in our master suite. It's California Ranch small, without architectural details, but we have gorgeous weather, a wonderful backyard and great light. The Plan: Borrow 15 inches from the already tight Master Bedroom. We are stripping our tiny master bath (65" x 104") to the studs, and creating an 80" x 104" room with our wish list items. Our wish list includes: 1) A wide shallow sink that's gorgeous! 2 people need to brush their teeth in the sink that is modern and beautiful. We found our dream sink, a 30" Alape shallow sink in white (4" draft) http://www.alape.de/media/books/Kataloge/A-form/EN-ES-IT/#50-51 2) Big, all glass, curb-less shower with rain head and hand held shower. We designed for a 46" x 46" enclosure with a linear drain, glass curb-less walls and a wide glass door. 3) Rain head shower and hand held shower...plus a teak bench inside the shower. Hardware mounted where it can be reached from the door, so you don't get wet when turning on the water. 4) Wall mount modern hardware for the sink - TY Cal Faucets 5) Separate Storage that meets our needs: Long modern cabinet with horizontal euro drawers high enough for us...countertop is 38", and the bottom of the cabinet is 8" off the ground. Sink is set in the center with a shallow draft and lots of storage in the center cabinet, including charging for toothbrush, shaver and blow dryer. 6) Architectural details for lighting and color ... accomplished by a skylight flush with one wall opposite the entry to take advantage of a fall of natural light along a wall made of Heath ceramic tile in Island Blue. Floor tile in 7) Comfort and luxury in Toto toilet with bidet seat --- a bidet seat on a drought sensitive one-piece skirted toilet perfect for cleanliness and comfort --- thank you Toto! And a modern acrylic shelf on the wall above the toilet for folded towels (West Elm). 8) Room to move even in a small bathroom, including a space 36" wide and the full 80" of room depth from the entry to the far wall beneath the skylight, room to dress, move and get ready, even space for a slim bench to drop clothes onto for undressing and dressing, plus a sliding door that takes no space from either room. 9) Well thought out functional lighting even in a small space --- wall mount lights around a huge 36" round mirror above the sink for task lighting, natural lighting from the skylight (even at night it has some LED at the top to give a bit of strategic glow in the room), subtle under cabinet lighting for moving at night, and a single light above the toilet area. 10) Warm Feet --- radiant floor heating under the tile, because it sucks to be cold in the morning....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
