I don't think a living plant will tolerate the close proximity to exhaust fumes created by your vehicle and others, the rubber dust from the road, and the hydrocarbon spray which will occur when residual gasoline, diesel fuel, and oil on the road inevitably mixes with rain water, essentially becoming a phytotoxic solution or suspension. Too, the rapid energy consumption that will be used during transpiration under high road temps and substantial air movement would almost certainly disallow the plant from reaching its LCP (light compensation point). A plant's LCP is the point at which the amount of food/energy created during the process of photosynthesis is at least equal to the amount of energy burned (oxidized) during respiration. A plant will not long endure circumstances/conditions that cause it to use more energy than it's creating. A plant's reserve of stored energy is much like a battery's stored energy reserve in that both quantities are finite. When energy reserves are exhausted, both can be said to be dead.
