Should white wall paint match cabinet paint?

We are remodeling our kitchen and the cabinets will be painted SW Pure White. We will have a gray tile backsplash covering some of the wall. The rest of the wall we plan to paint white. Should it be Pure White as well? Or is that too matchy? What about the ceiling? I am worried about too many shades of white looking weird next to each other, or all one shade of white looking stale. Any recommendations?

Use the same white. Whites dont always look good together, using the same white works a bit better. I would use flat on ceiling. Matte on the walls, and satin or semi gloss on the trim.

I was going to say the opposite - I'd choose two different whites that look good together.

An example: My master bath has a white vanity, white wall paint, white trim, white countertop and white sink (also white tub, toilet and white subway bath surround.) None of the whites "match" but I think they work well together.

The problem is that even if it is the same color the different types of surfaces won't look the same. Matte looks different than semi-gloss. You'll have to sample some colors to see what you like, but maybe a light gray would work. It also depends on what it's next to.

Why not some color instead . I think whites are difficult to mix and I also think walls need to be a color instead of all white. BTW you choose wall color and backspalsh after all the cabinets and counter are in place .

They should complement the walls, as well as the floor color, appliances, and countertops

Thanks for all the suggestions! A few more details about our kitchen plans…

Like I mentioned, most of the cabinets will be Pure White shaker. The island will be clear coat walnut shaker.

The countertops and backsplash will both be covered in a gray and white slab, and our range hood and most hardware will be brushed brass. Photos attached.

There is only one small wall that will be drywall, so I had been imagining white paint there but would be open to introducing another color if white would be hard to look good. Any suggestions?

Other rooms in our house are painted SW Hazel, SW Tony Taupe, and SW Indigo to give you an idea of colors exist elsewhere in the home.

Your choice of white walI and cabinets is just perfect with your other choices, very clean and fresh.

I think the walls and cabinets can be the same color white, but the cabinets should be a different sheen.

This is not only for interest's sake, but because cabinets get handled a lot, and in a kitchen with potentially food-covered hands, and a semi-gloss can be easily wiped clean.

You can even use high gloss, but the surfaces need to be in perfect condition, or the imperfections will be highlighted.

For the walls you can use eggshell or satin (satin has a little more sheen than eggshell) and I would use the semi-gloss on any trim in the room such as window and door casings, moldings, etc. You can use matte on the ceiling, or if you don't want to bother with the third type of paint if you won't be using this color anywhere else, just use the eggshell or satin on the ceiling as well, your kitchen will be nice and bright.

If your kitchen doesn't get much natural light or faces north or east I would paint the ceiling the eggshell or satin so that the light in the kitchen bounces around.
