Help! Living room tables?!

last modified: 3 years ago

Hello! We are putting some finishing touches on our living room in our new house, and I’d love some input on tables!

For context, in our old house, basically all of the furniture was dark espresso wood, and my tastes are changing so I’m trying to incorporate lighter woods into the mix. At the new house, the kitchen cabinets and the fireplace mantle are espresso, so I’ve been looking for ways to tie dark and light together. So far, I purchased these chairs (in this ”beige” color color) for the kitchen island and love them:

I also purchased this sofa table for against the wall behind the couch (which I love but admittedly I’m still not sure if I’ll keep since it’s a little lighter in person than it was online):

For the coffee table, I knew I wanted a neutral/light brown solid wood top accented with a darker color to bring in the espresso woods throughout the house. My first attempt at a new coffee table didn’t work out so well—it turned out to be pretty orange in person and isn’t the color I was going for at all. Here it is in the room (you can see the sofa table too):

For reference, the dimensions of the current coffee table are 48”x24.” I think the size is ok, but it could probably be a little bigger. Where it’s positioned now, the table is currently 18” away from both couches and about 24-25” away from the arm chair.

When I began searching for a replacement coffee table, I narrowed the search to at least 50” in length and only solid wood…

The first coffee table I’m considering (we will call it Table A) is solid wood with a natural stain on the top of the table, a darker stain on the legs and a crisscross pattern on each end. It measures 50”x26” so it’s 2” longer and wider than the current table. (It only has a weight capacity of 100 lbs though, which I was surprised by for solid wood). Here it is:

(Love the bolt details on the side…ties in with similar details on my kitchen island chairs)

The second table I’m considering (we will call it Table B) is also solid wood and has a similar style to the first one, except it has a trestle style base (and the description says it has a weight capacity of 350 lbs!). It measures 54”x36” so it is 6” longer than the current table and a 12” wider—which does seem very large but it is also a large room. Plus down the road when we retire the sectional, I’ll probably want to get two 3-cushion couches that face each other flanking the fireplace, and I’ll place the table between the two couches length-wise. Since the room is larger, a bigger coffee table would help close the gap between the couches… Anyway, here it is:

So my husband is worried Table B will be too large and take away too much floor space in the room, but since it’s such a big room, l’m worried smaller tables aren’t big enough—and a bigger table would allow people to actually reach the table from all seating areas. I love both Table A and Table B, but I can’t decide! Help! Which one would you choose?

Also, let me know your thoughts on the sofa table color—too light?

What about end tables? Should we add any? Where?

Go with Table A (50”x26”)
Go with Table B (54”x36”)

Yes, keep sofa table there. It anchors the art and provides decorative surfaces. Very pretty. Yes, move your fiddle fig to behind chair so it filters list. Here is floor lamp. Great buy right now. It has gold inside shade which is so pretty especially at night.

Btw. I would not put olive tree in left corner. The eye needs resting spots. The eye and lines of sight will be drawn to main focal points.

This is 40” x 40”. I didn’t have photo to mock this up well. I think it is really interesting possibility. See if you can tape that size out on rug.

Here is another one. Faux concrete look with black base. Repeating the blacks or any accent colors in your room, typically 3 times helps with cohesive look.

@Flo Mangan thank you so much!! When you said “I like sofa table as arranged IF you balance with coffee table“ I was thinking you meant the coffee table should be the same style (In this case French country with turned legs, etc). I have always looked for wood styles that are rectangular and similar style. Since the styles you suggested don’t seem to be the same, could you elaborate more on what you meant by this? Just trying to educate myself so I can make smart design decisions going forward! :) Thank you!

@jlynn1187 - Nice that @Flo Mangan likes the same lamp & arrangement on sofa table that I do. If the lamp getting knocked over is a worry, use ”Museum Wax” under $10, won’t damage wood, Google will show you many places to buy - I use it! Now, as long as you like that arrangement best too, sofa table project done. I also agree with Flo about larger fuller tree behind chair & no tree in window corner on sofa table side - just move the larger tree you have over behind chair & that’s settled. Move Olive tree out of room. I think Flo is showing you a more ”solid” feeling floor lamp to put by chair. The black shade - which I like - & the straight up pole make it feel more solid & substantial than the ”airy” style you show in pic. I do like Flo’s lamp & it looks great with chair. It also brings in the black that you want to tie in. I don’t think lamps have to match. I have 4 lamps in my great roo. 2 floor & 2 table. 3 leaded glass shades, 1 fabric. 2 have same shades 2 are different & all bases are different. The common denominator is all the bases are the same dark brown metal color. That smaller lamp you’re asking about is I think, too small for end table. The lamp height should be about head of sitting person height. Floor lamp higher. I do like that open drum type end table you found - it seems a good blend with both sofa table & kitchen counter stools! I sort of like the Troy Shutte square coffee table Flo is showing you too. It seems a good color match - does the 40”x 40” work? Have to tape it out for sure! I looked it up & the center hinged tops lift up so it’s storage! Neat!

What I meant is the sofa table has size and “presence” so the coffee table needs similar (not matching) but some presence. Can’t be delicate. I will wait for taping out size to see if your room will handle it.

    Hello! @Flo Mangan @KW PNW Z8 @groveraxle

So sorry for the delay—we’ve all been taking turns being sick here so I haven’t had the time to measure out the other table dimensions until now!

I had been looking at different table options. I think I really love the frame style tables with the metal frame and wood top. But I do also like the idea of a table with storage. Aside from the tables you suggested, here are a couple other styles I really love (links below each image):

    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/steelside-malta-coffee-table-w004758085.html

    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/ophelia-co-nebeker-four-legs-coffee-table-w003427020.html

    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/kelly-clarkson-home-solid-wood-trestle-coffee-table-w003033653.html

I measured out the 40”x40” size in the room:

And the 48”x24” which seems to be the most common size of the rectangular options I’ve come across:

I’d love to get your thoughts—shape? Go bigger? (Trying to keep in mind that one day I’d love to switch to a two sofa facing each other setup.)

Do you have links to other tables you think might work? I really would love to stick with a natural wood color to tie in with the other tables. And I would REALLY love to stay under $500 if I can…maybe I’m dreaming 😂

Also, I’m still not 10000% sure where I should place a side table with the other lamp. (Side note—I think I will use the cylinder shaped lamp you both liked but am still trying to track down a second one since there was only one where I found it.)

    THANK YOU!

You could do 2 tables that create a 48” x 48” square then later you could use them in center end to end. That would work if new sofas were greater than 96” long. I will find some examples. Bbl

You can choose any size you wish but both configurations have to work with it.

Thanks! any suggestions for ones that would work? Do you think both of the sizes I measured out in the room look too small?

@jlynn1187 Wondered where you went! I love that chair set up in corner of room & like the new table - looks like one you'd shown us. About coffee tables, - I like Flo's idea & how it works with two sofas but you'd need to figure out now the length of future sofas to preplan that layout. The mock up measurements you did really help - looks like 48 x 24 is too small. 40 x 40 better but still a little skimpy for your large space & sofa. Of the tables you're showing us from Wayfair, the first one that you like with metal frame wood top is too small at not quite 48 x24. The second 'nebeker four legs' is long at 40 x60 so I'd mock that up on floor to make sure 60" isn't too long. It is a good style match with your sofa table. My fave is Kelly Clarkson trestle bc I like seeing the rug pattern under it - at 54 x 32 it might be ok as just enough bigger than 48 x 24 to not be dwarfed by sectional sofa!

@KW PNW Z8 thank you! agreed that 48x24 looks a little small. I thought the 40x40 looked pretty good actually- maybe a teeny bit small but I like the square! To be honest, I really like all three of the ones I sent but I am not sure I have found ”the one” yet.

The first one I sent is nice and simple, and the dark frame pulls in some of the dark accents in the room.

The second one I really LOVE but it’s way above my price range, so I was moreso showing that as an example of the style I was considering.

The third one (Kelly Clarkson) I do really like, but looking at the customer reviews, it looks like the table is actually a lot darker in person- and I think I’d prefer a lighter wood similar to the tones I have in the room currently.

I have been SCOURING the internet trying to find the perfect table! Any suggestions you guys can provide would be so amazing! (And you have no idea how much I appreciate your continued help and advice! I feel like we are SO close, and when I see the one I’ll know! Can’t wait to finally find one that I love.)

Maybe a square OR a longer rectangular one thats also pretty wide so its kinda like a cross between the two I measured out? looking at the measurements, what size would be ideal for the room? 52-55 x 32-40?

Yes to both I think. The table needs to have enough bulk that it’s not dwarfed by sectional. A longer rectangular will work with 2 sofas in future for sure & might be easier to find. I just looked at the Kelly Clarkson table reviews & you’re right that it is darker than your sofa table, bar chairs & side table. It’s also reclaimed wood so might be too ”rustic” . I scrolled through many tables & didn’t find anything to suggest.

You need bigger. You could easily go 48 square. How long before you might do two sofas? If 4+ years get what you want now. If less, try for sizes that work with both concepts.

Still have gang here so no time to shop. Check local Facebook marketplace etc. For bargains.

@KW PNW Z8 thank you! I have been looking at tables non stop and can’t seem to find anything :(

@Flo Mangan good point — I guess its possible we might have the sectional for 4+ more years even though I would love to replace it now. So maybe I should just go for a square now since that looks really nice with a sectional.

I was looking back at the two options you suggested again… I actually do REALLY love the Troy Shutte box table with storage- and love that it would give us somewhere to throw toys that make their way upstairs. (QUESTION: Do you suggest getting the Honey color or the Whitewash color?) The only things I do not like about it are the PRICE (wish I could find it for $500 or less) and that it would cover up a big part of the rug. But style-wise it is beautiful. It is 40x40 which I think looks pretty good in the room but I do think we could go bigger too.

And the other table with the concrete top- love the frame style but I am hesitant to buy a gray top table since I have a gray sectional. Might be a lot of gray.

I’d love to see any other suggestions you come across! :)

@jlynn1187 Good morning! Wow - that table from FB looks about perfect style wise! That one mar at left edge might be pretty fixable wo refinishing whole table. It might be a reason to get it for a pretty decent price. Maybe they could send you a close up pic of that spot so you can decide whether or not to make the trip to see it?

  • PRO

I think there is wear along edges too. But definitely could be painted. It doesn’t look like wood? So “refinishing” probably not going to work. But size is great. Price is only question I have.

Agree with Flo on wear - I can see that along edge above drawer - probably caused by putting feet with shoes on against the edge. Whether it’s wood or not I’ll defer to Flo as I can’t say - I was thinking it was but maybe a softer wood like pine.. Curious too about the price - definitely worth asking the seller for more info , more pics & maybe some pics of underside of table which might give more clues to the sturdiness of table wo having to see it in person. Could be the perfect table for rambunctious kids to grow up around! 😊

oooh if that's inexpensive and solid, I would definitely get it - you could paint it, add casters if you wanted, find a fabulous tray etc.. - seems like it would be a great basic you could work around - (I recently bought a super solid honey oak table/chairs on FB for $30, painted it black for a basement rec room and it's perfect, LOVE a bargain)

Thanks, all! I was pretty excited when I saw it! Love the big size and leg style. The seller told me it is solid wood but she’s not sure what type. The mark is the result of lots of moves. She sent some additional photos (below), including one of the underside. She’s asking $250 OBO. Considering I’ll have to refinish or paint it, what do you think is fair? (I’ll probably have a mother-daughter team near us that paints/refinished furniture do that for us—they do great work. But I’m assuming it’ll be a couple hundred $$). Also, I’ll still have to figure out another end table for the second lamp.

  • PRO

With a washed white and goldish resurfacing like your sofa table and for that size and price it can work. The sectional isn’t French. Your room is more “transitional” so it’s a good way to stretch your budget. We can style/accessorize it to bring more French country into it. But your call.

@jlynn1187 That Instagram table has a very clever add on detail & it looks great. Love the finish too. The additional pics of FB table are somewhat helpful. I think that ding on table top really affects the value. Also still not clear if top can be sanded & refinished - is it wood or a plastic / slick veneer? The seller needs to provide a picture of the ding on top with a coin next to it so you can tell just how large it is - looks huge in the close up but may be only dime size. My other thought about ding is location - since it’s at edge of table it will be impossible to hide with table decor such as a tray sitting on a flaw in middle of table. That makes it very important to know what it's made of. The pic of bottom is no help - they need to turn it over & take clear pic of any ID markings & the corner leg constuction! Doubt seller has receipt to show what they paid but knowing where purchased might tell a bit about quality - higher end furniture store vs discount store. I think $250 is high espcially due to condition. If it can be refinished to repair mar, maybe $175. @Flo Mangan will no doubt have more knowledgeable advice than I can provide - she did say she’s busy with family until tomorrow. Maybe you can ask seller for better pic of top ding to help. I’d tell seller the concern about ability to refinish. They’ll let you know if they have other interest which will help determine any offer amount from you. You could check CL for your area to get an idea of what wooden coffee tables are going for - gently used wood furniture always gets better selling price than unpholstered furniture.

@jlynn1187 another thought - you could send the pics of table to that Mother daughter team & ask for estimate on what they’d charge to refinish that table to look just like the Instagram table - that piece of info will help you decide how great a deal the FB table is & also how much you’d be willing to pay for it!

I question if it is real wood. Real wood finish doesn’t peel off.

  • PRO

If you can play with finish yourself, using Chalk paints etc. And a “worn” look is ok with you, this can be a good deal. Here are some ideas for style large coffee tables. Also, with young children, you won’t have to be holding your breath every time they play on it.

I liked what you had with soft contrasts, and idk if the sofa table will stay unchanged, but why not sand the coffee table and 'make it work'? :)

    is the sectional grey?

  • PRO

If the table isn’t real wood, you can’t successfully sand it. That’s why I would do a faux finish because that can be applied to any surface pretty easily. For $150 it’s a 2-4 year table. It stays under budget. To have it professionally refinished think at least $400. So if you can’t do it yourself, I would pass on it.

Hello! Update: Got more details and photos from the FB Marketplace seller. She said the mark is more like a scuff and not a chip and whatever sealant they used on the table initially got rubbed off.

    @KW PNW Z8 @Flo Mangan

I was thinking $150-175 also—glad I’m on the right track! I realize the sofa isn’t transitional. Maybe my style can be a combo of transitional/modern farmhouse/French country???! I love elements of all of those styles.

I love the Instagram inspiration photo—color and details on the corners! Think that would work well on the FB Marketplace table if I go with that?

I did send the photos of the table to the mother/daughter team so they should be sending me a quote soon! Hoping it’s reasonable.

I’m not completely opposed to refinishing it myself but I barely have time to eat meals while chasing around my three kids so I thought it might just be easier to have someone who knows what they’re doing make it pretty for us 😆 I’d love to experiment with DIY stuff like this at some point. I do like the idea of it being a big sturdy table that has already taken a little bit of a beating - won’t make me so anxious with the kids around.

I think my dream table is actually this one (below) but it’s $1600 so probably not going to happen anytime soon, and no luck finding one similar in the right tone for the right price.

@Flo Mangan I love the tables you sent. The first one looks very similar to the one on FB marketplace. I also really like the ones with storage so we could hide all the toys that are scattered around the floor! I keep going back to that Troy Shutte one you sent originally, so pretty, but maybe a little small, and also a little pricey.

@everdebz which contrast are you referring to? The original post photo?

    Thanks, all!

@jlynn1187 those additional pics you got from seller really helped! Seems like they’d help the refinishing ladies give you a realistic quote without seeing actual piece. I agree with everything @Svetlana J wrote except the offer price - based on size & location of the mar on table top I’d still offer $175 to start. I don’t know your locale & prices but I’d want to,give seller room to counter offer $200. I do think it’s a great size table, definitely wood - maybe pine vs a hardwood - but can be refinished to look just like the Instagram inspo you found. Hoping the refinishing quote makes this a good deal! Please keep us posted!

Thank you! Just got this back from the mother/daughter team—does this sound reasonable?

“To refinish the coffee table in a very light wood tone, possibly adding a white to achieve a more natural look, add corner braces for accent detail and seal in a matte polyacrylic finish would be $550.”

@jlynn1187 Hmm - more than I thought it would be for simple piece but last piece I had refinished was a vintage oak draw leaf dining table over 15 years ago & I remember more than $600 - it was dipped so less labor & refinished. $550 isn’t too far above the $400 Flo guessed. I did some Google research on refinishing costs & based on that, price seems in line. Don't know if piece like this would be hand stripped or dipped. Might there be a compromise in refinishing for lower price by redoing the top only to repair it & adding the side metal strap detail? It might be you like existing color or you could have top only done in a darker color to pull in the dark tones you’ve mentioned - not black but a deeper tone than it is. Maybe the refinishing team would give you some ideas based on their experience. Do you have any vibes from seller on what’s the lowest price they’ll accept? Either way, the answer is how much less this table total cost will be vs cost of the one you really like.

Or you could get a quart of chalk paint in almost any color at Lowe’s for $20, a quart of polycrylic sealer for $18, 20 metal corner brackets on Amazon for $11, a good quality brush for $20 and some sandpaper. Under $100 you’ll be able to refinish the table and proudly show off your work to your family and guests.
