Marmoleum? Lineolum. Not vinyl

Is true lineolum (not vinyl) something that people just don’t know much about? I recently discovered it as a flooring option, but can’t find much info aside from the Forbo marmoleum site and a few (older) discussions here and on youtube. Most flooring articles and designers dont even mention it. Ya’ll have opinions or experience on lineolum for 2021/2022? the kinds that look like modern flooring (natural, muted, wood/slate etc) not the school cafeteria or the retro checkboard kitchen. Just simple, boring, goes with most everything styles.

I put in Marmoleum sheet when I remodeled my kitchen last year. I'm very happy with it so far. It needs more maintenance than vinyl, requiring occasional buffing/restoring. But I love that it is resilient, and I love the color (Surprising Storm, maybe that's the school cafeteria kind to you but I think it's great). I also love that it's made out of natural materials.

You've probably seen this thread already:

Was the original made with asbestos? For some reason these two have forever been linked in my brain.

No, linoleum is made of wood, cork, linseed oil, pine resin. etc.

Asbestos was added to vinyl wallpaper, flooring and linoleum for fireproofing.

Unfortunately, the public and so-called flooring professionals use the term

”linoleum” interchangeably to describe real linoleum and vinyl (PVC).

You need to contact Forbo and get some samples. Like everything else cheaper just sells better so of course this is the case with flooring too. I have laminate from Germany it is made according to all the rules in Germany so much better than some NA made flooring We have huge dogs so the floor needed to stand up to them. I grew up with linoleum in our kitchen and mud room my Mom found it easy to care for it was waxed when it needed it . I think vinyl is just plain easier to live with and cheap the rest is up to you to decide what is important.

My son and DIL have Marmoleum that they installed perhaps 8 or 9 years ago in a lime green color. We were just talking about it the other day, and she mentioned that it shows everything so she needs to keep on top of it by vacuuming every day. (They have 3 elementary school age kids.)

I had a caramel color Marmoleum in my kitchen for 20 years. Loved everything about it. Would have put it in my new kitchen but the new kitchen is open to our living room. It feels great underfoot and is really easy to take care of.

I have Marmoleum in my kitchen, it is a Yellow with orange, gray, white swirls... it's fresh looking.

the brightest of the color options, at the time.

Durable, but I have 4 seams. The 'welds' are dirty looking, all the time.

I think the Professional installers were careless in the seaming and could have done a neater/smoother job.

It's 5 years old now, and beginning to show some wear. It is soft underfoot. and feels warmer than most tile or vinyl surfaces.

That's a shame, Lyn, We installed the tiles ourselves and the seams are still intact and tight. That was 2013.

thanks for the input! We have a rather open floor plan and I really cannot figure out a good marmoleum for all that space (I want continuous flooring for the open areas- kitchen, living, dining, entry). So… leaning towards some type of wood or wood looking planks.

@cawaps just looked up that color and it is great! School cafeteria I meant saturated school colors with busy designs and the mascot in the center :)

I had Marmoleum in our previous house and am looking at installing in our pending kitchen remodel. I really like that is made out of natural material, feels soft on the feet and easy to clean. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats and 3 kids and it held up well. Also had wooden chairs in the breakfast area and metal barstools at the island with no problems. We had sheet (not tile) professionally installed. We ordered several samples to see how the color would look in the light of the kitchen and went with Shell. https://www.forbo.com/flooring/en-us/products/marmoleum/marmoleum-marbled/marmoleum-marbled-all-colors/b3jx8a#3075

We had a lime green marmoleum floor with inlays in our last kitchen. It was a very nice material for a kitchen floor.

I have Marmoleum in my laundry room and love it! Mine is a light blue with kind of a Jackson Pollack vibe, and makes me happy every time I see it.
