If you have a bath mat in front of the shower, why do you need an area rug?

In fact, why do you need a mat in front of the sink?

Ive seen people do rugs instead of bath mats and i think it looks fantastic.

I would put a hook in the shower to hang the bath mat when not in use; sew a loop onto it if necessary. It can then be put down for stepping out of the shower. Command Hooks has many different styles that would work, which do not require drilling. I've used them outside my shower for wet towels for 10 years and inside my shower for wet washcloths - no problems at all as long as you get those rated for the right weight. They have decent looking metal finish styles.

I think an area rug would then look wonderful in your space. There are lots of really beautiful indoor/outdoor rugs that mimic wool Oriental or Persian rugs. While not machine washable, they spot clean easily and you just hose them off in the driveway! Look at rugs.com or esalerugs.com for ideas

I think maybe instead of a rug you strat thinking about a redo of this space you have huge tub you never use and a vinity the size of a postage stamp can we see the whole space ? IMO bath mats are best not sitting on the floor I never want to have rug that needs cleaning all the time since IMO bathrooms are the one space that needs to be really easy to keep clean and honestly yuors is just too big for no reason and I sure hope you do not have a mat in front of the toilet. We roll our shower up and put it on the back of the toilet when not being used and in the other bathroom it hangs over the side of the tub. That makes cleaning the floor easy .

It’s really personal preference. I have a throw rug in front of our shower, plus a thick Oriental-style runner in front of our long vanity. I like the warmth and softness of them, how they look, not having to stand on cold tile … and they aren’t hard to keep clean at all.

In your bathroom, yes, I think an area rug would look nice, but again, it’s a personal thing.

From the one photo you posted, I think what your bathroom needs is COLOR. If you switch out the towels for something bright, and add a coordinating piece of art over the bath towel, I think you'll do a lot to improve the space.

My first thought is "you need color." The space is really quite bland. Colored towels, maybe wall-mounted low-light house plants or some botanical prints.

Also, in the photo, the floors read beige while the wall color reads pink. I think that's throwing things off. Painting the walls a warmer color, one that looks good with the floor, will help a lot.

Now would be a good time to consider how the style of rug will affect bathroom, in order to create an overall more defined look. Hang mat over tub when not in use/to dry and then decide on size of rug (could tape out).

I chose an injection of black to complement vanity and hardware. Accessory suggestions below and spray paint mirror. Suggest removing towel rack by shower, as there are too many racks.

I love the rug in my bathroom. It's close enough to the shower and tub to step out on, so no additional mats are needed.

We hang the bath mat over the shower's towel bar handle, just to let it dry and keep it clean. Would love to have a rug in front of our vanities, as tile gets very cold in winter, but the bathroom door wouldn't clear it.

Ruggable makes washable rugs. I have several and they wash up beautifully. I have doormat size and runners. An area rug might require a commercial washing machine. Just an FYI.

Runner- if mat is usually on the floor. Try typical area rug if mat is hung up, leaving more visual floor space; 4 x 6' might seem a "size companion" with the tub, which is also large... what do you think...? :)

Your 2nd rug that has the "cool" large shape - to go with it - might like some colorful item over the towel bar.

This, and I say to help with the rug. Any print over the towel bar would add alot.
