Remodeling Modern Farmhouse to Contemporary - Help!

last modified: 3 years ago

Help! I have a bit of a dilemma as the home I purchased is modern farmhouse but I would like to update (over time) to a clean, contemporary, simple style. Three rooms I am struggling with.

The primary bathroom has white Bellmont 1600 cabinets, white countertops with a gray vein, and white with gray vein tiling. Located on 2nd floor.

The guest bathroom has not been touched and still is 1990 style. Located on 2nd floor.

The kitchen currently has the same white Bellmont 1600 cabinets, white countertops with a gray vein, and dark real wood flooring, farmhouse backsplash. Island has dark wood Bellmont 1600 cabinet finish. Kitchen located on main floor. I planned on changing hardware (as you can see WIP on hardware in the photo) and backsplash to help modernize, despite the cabinets being less modern.

Originally, I was planning on remodeling the guest bathroom to include colors like: gray large tiling floor, white stacked large tiling bathtub wall, new bathtub, fixtures, etc. However, I'm concerned having the updated look in the guest will conflict with the primary bathroom. So then, I thought OK let's take the same tiling finishes over to the primary bathroom (it needs new mirrors anyways!)

BUT now I'm concerned having updated clean/contemporary/simple looks in the two bathrooms is going to clash with the farmhouse style kitchen.

Am I overthinking this? I'm right in thinking at least a cohesive style is important between bathrooms and kitchens, while not every color has to match? (ie. all white cabinets in all rooms). Thoughts?

I think you Ed to breathe😂. Farmhouse is simple to convert to modern- the basics are the same. In the bath- switch the mirrors to a metal frame and

And add modern light fixtures. In the kitchen- finish the hardware switch, and make the same light fixture change. The backsplash is fine, maybe the stove accent is off, but if it isn’t possible to take just that off, leave it. Bathrooms should coordinate, but if you’re in process, it’s fine that they don’t yet!

Change the wood island to paint in a color that works with your other furnishings.

Change shaker doors to less fussy slab on all cabinets. In kitchen replace tile backsplash with same material as counters. Less lines are needed for a clean modern feel.

Overthinking for sure. Start in the room that bothers you the most into the style you want and the rest will slowly follow and do not be concerned if it does not match the rest of the house as they will eventually. I believe you can do small updates without a full on reno. Paint the wood bathroom vanity a dark grey, change out the faucets, mirror and lighting for instance. Carrera in the shower can look quite modern when mixed with blacks instead. New hardware in the kitchen will certainly help modernize it along with a more modern runner and maybe repaint the island. Later you can consider changing out the doors to something more modern to update them. Start a wish book of images of rooms you LOVE and then find the elements in the photos that you must have and put them into your own home. You have all good bones you need to change it to your likes and remove the previous owners likes. Baby steps.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Taking a step back, yes, I'm 100% overthinking haha! :)

Ditto rtgaige03...I don't see farmhouse style in your pics, just transitional. Update the guest bath as you wish and it'll blend fine. The only thing I'd feel compelled to change in the main bathroom to de-farmhouse completely is the wood frames around the mirrors.

    Modern farmhouse, according to Dirt.

Unpainted wood equals farmhouse...at least in L.A.
