What does my living room need (and what color coffee table is best?)

I'm happy with the blue and white color scheme, but how can I pull this together better? Although it's hard to see in the photo, the rug picks up the color of the fireplace tile. Should I have art on the wall with the TV? And what color should I stain the cedar chest (or replace it with a proper coffee table)? I am partial to cottage and farmhouse style. Thank you.

I like your fireplace very much. However, I feel that wall is chopped up and too busy. I’m no pro and will let them offer suggestions. Personally I think your room would look better without an accent wall. Also - change color of built ins. It’s a cozy room and I think a few tweaks will make it great!

I think the built ins were painted...my sister in law did this. They really draw attention now don't they? I don't care for hers either. I would try and clean the fireplace. Against the white chair it really looks dingy. What color is the table with the lamp next to the sectional? In order for a room to look intentional you need at least two his of the same wood so the built ins should be the same as the mantle and the end table the same as the TV stand perhaps...the very light piece that stands alone could be brought in by matching it with the coffee table. If the built ins were their original wood what you have for a coffee table would work.

I think the room looks nice. And I really like the blue paint color you chose but it doesn't complement the FP. I would get an oval glass & brass coffee table. I would put the cabinet the TV is sitting on the wall where the pine cabinet is and get a TV stand that is at least 25% wider than the TV and a bit lower. It would fill the wall better. I would get it closer to the brown of the FP. I would prefer art over the FP because the mirror is reflecting anything worth seeking twice. If you move that tv cabinet, you could then hang the mirror over it and it would reflect the art over the FP. I think the chair would be better where the plant is now.

@jck910, thank you for your feedback! The wall with the pine cabinet (actually that's a folding table that seats 6 people when open--b/c we have no dining room!) is actually the entry--the curtain to the right is actually covering our front door (we cover it at night). But I could make the other changes you suggested. If I kept the TV cabinet on the same wall, would you still suggest the wider and lower cabinet?

That TV cabinet is fine no need to spend unnecessarily. Switch the chair to the other side and move the plant (if it's real). Look at wayfair & target for coffee tables. Art can be found at local galleries or minted.com art.com
