What color curtains and curtain rod to use w/rug & black furniture?

I have black leather couches, espresso furniture, the rug attached in the picture, and a velvet, navy blue, swivel chair (see in pic). What color curtain rod and curtains do you suggest for the windows in this room (see pic or room attached)?

Note— we will be moving into this house soon, so it’s empty as of now. Also, we will be putting blinds up.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate all of your suggestions.

Tara, would you consider changing rug/ furniture? I think in such a light house your items will be way too dark….

I’m open to changing the rug and chair, but our black leather couch has to stay due to funds and husband.

What do you have in mind rug wise, chair wise, and curtain rod and curtain wise?

Also, please know I was going with a darker rug due to having 2 under 2.

Hello. I think something that either subtly or heavily incornporates the blue in your rug would be nice. Otherwise gray could also be a good choice. I would say almost any rod color could work depending on what you have going on in the rest of your home.

For the windows by the fireplace? I don't think you can have draperies, except on the bookcase side of each window because of how the hearth is built - plus fabric would be too close to the firebox. Not sure if you'd like the look of them only on one side of the window. Maybe think about roman shades you can lower instead of blinds. Is that brick wall a house right there? Are there windows that look into your windows so that you need even daytime privacy?

    Good point!

I just tried to edit my post to add pics and I thought it erased the whole thing. I'll add here:
If you did this, you wouldn't have as much room to stack them, but if you like it, be sure not to skimp on fullness or they will look skimpy.

Maybe matchstick blinds for daytime privacy:

    Romans with matchstick underneath:

you can lower the Romans at night for more privacy.

You could maybe find some fabric that incorporates the black and blue in a print and have Romans made.

You don't have enough room on the side of the bookcases, either for curtains. Blinds are okay but if you want color, Romans or Roller shades would be better.

I would look for a rug that has a pattern, incorporating a medium blue, white, and black. Pattern will cover up the messes made by your “2 under 2!” And incorporating pattern with white or cream will also lighten up your room. Good luck!

Could y’all please give examples of rugs and what color Roman shades to go with rug? Thank you so so much!! 🙏♥️

What does matchstick underneath mean? Sorry!! All new to me

Which rug would you suggest from these? Then, I could do navy Roman shades.

After choosing the rug, do y’all happen to have links of where to buy navy Roman shades and match stick (what ever that is— would appreciate someone sharing what a match stick is)

Again, thank y’all for your help. 🙏♥️

I think you should get 100% nylon rug ( Wes West Elm has nice selection). they are very easy to clen and your kids will enjoy soft rug to play on for many years.

Actually, polypropylene is a better rug fiber for cleaning & less expensive. It's why all the outdoor rugs are made of polypropylene.

BeverlyFLADeziner— Do you have any suggestion of where to buy one or if any are on Amazon that are navy blue? Most of my decor includes navy blue, silver, or gold. Due to this, I’d like the rug to match. Also, do you have any suggestions or Roman shades that would go well with that color rug for the windows ?

These are the Roman shades I’m thinking. Would y’all suggest any of these polypropylene rugs? If so, which do you think goes better. @BeverlyFLADeziner

These are the rugs I found and like.. just need help figuring out which one would work best with the Roman shades and with kids

Some websites allow you to place the rug in a picture of your room. I have to say I just don't get the black navy combination being successful.

We will be getting new couches in a couple years. My husband is just not ready to part from them. For future reference— what color would you suggest to go with navy for a new couch color?

I cannot find any chair that can compete with that navy blue swivel chair, so I have found rugs that will work with your preferred color combination. They combine the navy blue with some black and some neutral color. These rugs are from Rugs-Direct.com but I'm sure you find similar ones on many websites.

For throw pillows consider patterned pillows like these. These pillow covers are all from Etsy.com

Could you please tell me what the titles/names of these two rugs you sent are ? I’m unable to find them on the site you sent. Sorry!

    Love the chest!

Beverlyfladeziner, i think you offer great design, but need to read up on your rug fiber… ”Polypropylene or Olefin Carpet Fiber offers good stain and moisture resistance, but scores below nylon and polyester for wearability. Unlike nylon, it isn't resilient and can easily crush and lose texture. It is best suited for loop pile construction or high, very dense cut piles where crushing isn't a concern.” From my personal expirience good nylon rug can handle any wear and stains extremely easy to remove.

@lisedv— Could you please send me the link to that rug and the Roman shades as well in the picture with the navy blue? I really appreciate your input.

Here's the link for the beige/taupe roman shades but look on Amazon you'll find several: https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/symple-stuff-insulating-cordless-blackout-roman-shade-w001373468.html?piid=1580812256. Here's the link for the beige rug: https://ruggable.com/products/damali-black-white-rug?size=5x7. For the blue rug, I just used one the the suggestions given above but I know similar rugs are on Amazon. Here's the link for the white & blue roman shade: https://www.amazon.com/Roman-Chevalle-border-mechanism-Custom/dp/B07CXVJB1Q. Again you can look up several model offered. I'm in Canada but all links work in USA.

I'd be careful with going too light a rug if you're keeping the black leather furniture. Too much contrast is going to make them stand out even more - I think one that incorporates the blue and black will look best. I think Beverly's advice is good; the pics with the rugs she placed with the black leather look nice. Some pillows with both colors will bring it all together. I thought this was a particularly nice one that she posted:

@Olychick- Thank you for your help and input. Could you tell me where you can find this pillow cover and what it’s called, please?

    Thank you!

@Lisedv- Thank you again for the designs and input. I truly appreciate it. Could you please tell me where you found that rug store wise and what it’s called? I really like it a lot. Also, the same thing for the Roman shades, please? 🙏

You have to look online, don't think they have a store, the company is Ruggable. I'm in Canada so it links me directly to the Canadian website but there is one in the States. You can see all the different models and sizes and they show the enlarged pattern for you to see the colors. My daughter has one of their rugs, and so do I in my entrance so it's nice that it's washable even if it's a large size. You also order their underpad which adheres perfectly (usually included in the price).

@lisedv— Thank you! could you possibly please tell me what it’s called?

@lisedv— Sorry, I was talking about the blue one

Tara, Beverly posted that pillow above. I just re-posted it. Hopefully, she will see this and answer. Or try a reverse image search maybe.

All the pillow covers I posted are from ETSY.com I search for Blue Ikat designs on Etsy and they pop up. That exact pillow is from years ago so there is no telling if the same fabric is still available, but there is usually something close to it.
