Coffee tables and the ⅔ rule

last modified: 3 years ago

I'm in the market for a new coffee table and I stumbled upon the ⅔ rule, which says your coffee table should be ⅔ the length of your couch. My couch is roughly 85''x40'', which would mean a coffee table around 56'' long. What's worse - going too big or too small? I'm specifically looking at West Elm and Pottery Barn and there's very little in that size. Could I get away with 60''?***To put the room size into perspective, I have a 9x12 area rug in the room.
