Our bathroom/shower glass layout won't work???... Please help!!

Our shower glass designer was at our house yesterday and after much discussion says we need to change the current half-walls to use available hardware to hold the glass and door. I, of course, do not want to change the half-walls.

We would like a frameless system with glass from the top of each half-wall to the ceiling and a door with hinges on the end of the left half-wall/glass (the door to start an inch above the floor to 12 inches from the ceiling, allowing air to be drawn out by the exhaust fan, avoiding a sauna). The designer states the hinges available will not work at the angles created by our wall layout. It seems simple to me, but I'm no expert.

The designer would like us to change our tiled half-walls so the ends of the half-walls face each other like in a doorway. Ripping off tile, changing the wall structure and retiling. Ugh!

The designer plans to review the situation and both framed and frameless possibilities with his hardware supplier to find out if there is hardware available to allow our current layout to work.

Note: The half-walls are perpendicular to each other and the shower is approx. 50" square (with the corner cut out for the door).

My thoughts were to do it as laid out in my drawing below...

I understand that regular hinges have a natural closure point when perpendicular out from the mounting(?). I found adjustable hinges that seem to address this problem (and emailed the info to the designer)...

We will not accept a 'framed' option.

1. What do you think about the frameless layout I drew above with the adjustable hinges?

2. Will this work as drawn?

3. Do we use U-channel or clamps where the glass sits on the half-wall?

4. Do we need to attach or seal the glass to the tiled walls, or are they far enough out of the way of spray to just leave the small space unsealed/unattached?

5. Do we need some kind of strip along the right side of the door to form a seal or closure?

6. What else have I forgotten to include or need to consider?

I know our designer should be figuring all this out and hopefully will. I want to be prepared to discuss this somewhat intelligently to ensure things go the way I think they should. I'd contact other glass shower suppliers but there aren't any. We are rural and there's only one (who DOES get good on-line ratings).

Have a printed tear sheet available when you talk to the next guy. All the shops buy their hinges in bulk. They like to work with items they have no issues with. They may not want to work with items that are beyond their comfort zone because they have to guarantee their work.

Maybe try another glass company I am not sure what you are planning but you will need some sort of support on the walls not just silicone . Is that a open storage space between the shower and the tub I think you need some better info from the beginning of this redo .and I am reall ycurious to know how the waterproofing was done and why the deigner is now being involved , where were they in this process.

Sorry but you are bringing the glass people in too late. The walls are built wrong for most hardware. I would add a rail at the top and a pivot at the bottom if that’s even an option (I know you said you want frameless but you also don’t want to alter walls)

Thank you for your input!!

The glass company was involved with the design on paper and provided no negative feedback (unfortunately) or we would have made the changes. We live in a rural area and this is the only company close enough to be interested.

Would these adjustable hinges solve our problem and work with a frameless system (as drawn)? They seem to be the answer but I'm no expert, obviously.

The wall between the tub and shower has a niche on each side, one above for the shower and below for the tub.

The walls surrounding the tub and shower along with the floors are all Schluter products (for waterproofing).

The angled walls will not work as shown, the hinges are not made to be used that way and will not work properly. The glass company is correct.

Always good to see what others have done in similar situations. Take a look at these and see if one of them could be used as a reference when you speak to the next glass guy. BTW IMO your design looks a bit overly complicated. Either go to the ceiling or don't and consider using the minimal frame support to securely anchor the panels and the door. I'd rather see the minimal frame that 20 supports.

I understand that standard hinges will not work. These ADJUSTABLE hinges appear to address my problem. Do you think THEY will work?

I'm looking into changing the left hand wall so it has a wing (leaving the right as is). Using a frame with pivots, not hinges.

Nope. Rebuild both with wing walls. As it should have been built originally. Whomever designed that should be paying for their sins in creating a non standard plan.

Is there a 'practical' reason to change the wall to the right? Is there a reason it can't seal against the angled surface?

Change the walls or change the plan. Simplest would be pivots

We're going to change the left wall to something like BeverlyFLADeziner's 2nd picture with pivots or hinges and leave the right side unchanged. Thank you all for your help!!
