Hi! I'm new here, and I need advice pronto for my home exterior!

Contractors are coming in a week to pressure wash (I don't want to paint the brick) and repair and paint trim and garage doors, replace light fixtures, and stain the front door.

What color should I paint trim and garage doors, and what color to stain front doors, and I'll take suggestions on light fixtures, too. I need to order them asap- I really don't like the current fixtures. All ideas are welcome for updating! Thank you in advance!

How do you feel about something subtle, just a few steps beyond tone on tone?

I took inspiration from this house:

    https://www.houzz.com/photos/fondren-traditional-exterior-dallas-phvw-vp~28851400

The accent color around the windows is SW Pavestone (the darker color is all gutters):

I think it might be something to consider for your garage and trim. The front door would look good a darker tone, such as mahogany:

I think any stain without strong orange tones would work … I like the idea of something fairly dark for contrast.

I’d go with a lantern in this style, in oil rubbed bronze. I would go a bit bigger than your current ones, they look small and kind of disappear in relation to the size of the house:

This is the link to that — Wayfair — but I can’t say if they’re the right size. You’ll need to measure and see what you think. I’m mainly just sharing the style; these are easy to find in many sizes at many stores.

Anyway, that’s one idea, hopefully you get lots more from our talented mock-up artists. It is hard to be sure about colors on computer monitors, so of course try samples to make sure whatever it is works with the brick. The one I posted might not work depending on the exact tones in your bricks.

On a house your size, with white windows, I don’t think a highly contrasting trim and garage color would be best — it could be too busy and choppy. I’d go with warm creams, greiges, tans etc.

Landscaping updates would make a big difference, too. I like your Live Oak. :)

Beautiful house! I like the existing light fixtures, assuming they're in good shape. To my eye they complement the house.

It looks like the only trim you have is around the door area. Your windows are all white, and trim is brick. I would do white trim around the door too which is what you already have, and also the garage door. I like the light fixtures you already have on the house. In other words, just what you already have. Its a very nice looking house.

It will be lovely after a good washing. I would change the lights to lanterns with down lights, white trim and something more decorative for house numbers.

Or you could select a color that's a bit darker in tone.

Your outdoor lights should be about 1/3 the height of the front door.

Selecting paint colors might best be done once the house is pressure washed so you can be sure of the exact colors you're working with. I tend to think the color of the keystones above the two first floor windows might be a good white for the trim. Take a few close up shots of it when clean to take to the paint store. How about a stain for the door and garage doors to match? If you pull out those ragged shrubs, the crew will thank and you'll have the opportunity to improve the landscaping. Here's a house similar to your color with stained garage doors for concept.

    Thank you all so much!

lisedv-- there is not much trim around windows, and it the window pane frames are black in the second picture you posted. Is that something that I could have painted? How hard is that to do?

I’m pretty sure your windows are vinyl and metal, or at least not wood … and if so, painting them would not be a good idea.

If your windows are vinyl (which it doesn’t look like they would be on this house) but if they are you need to check with the manufacturer about painting them and the warranty on the windows. Beautiful home! Love the architecture. I agree about the landscaping I would do something about that hedge. When you say you don’t want to paint the brick I’m assuming you also mean the brick around the windows? I don’t think it’s going to make much sense to just paint the thin window frame and the grilles. A lot of work.

If windows are vinyl, dont create a maintenance issue, where there is none, by painting them. Leave them white. It looks good the way it is.

Very few houses that style in Texas (or somewhere warm with Live Oaks, lol), built in that decade, have wood or paintable windows. And the vinyl grids are inside the glass. I’m not explaining it technically correct, sorry, just saying it’s not an option to paint these all dark.

I mean, the metal/aluminum frames could be, but the grids would still be white.

Think about replacing the door, which leans Victorian. You house is beautiful and the door doesn't do it justice.

    Thanks!

What type of door do you recommend--I like the one lisedv had in her picture.

So, if I can't change the window panes to black, should I not use black paint anywhere--too busy?

And, any recommendations for LOW-maintenance landscaping to replace the hedges?

    I like that a lot!

I want to do black trim and taupe garage doors as lisedv showed in her mock-up. Any suggestions on SW paint colors for that? Is there just a "black" or are there a million versions of black paint too? Any taupe recommendations? I have to pick colors by tomorrow! Thanks!

Monica, here are my suggestions but as previously mentioned, you should CHECK THE SAMPLES ON SITE to see how they actually look on your house. That's not something that can be done on computer as colors appear differently from one computer to another.

Monica. What did you decide. Just saw your post. My good friend has a home here on Gulf Coast Texas very similar. She is debating similar decisions. If you could post your results that would be great! Thanks.

Hi Monica ! Have you made a decision? If so, could you please share some pictures?

Since our facades are similar, your pictures would really help me out. Thanks a bunch!
