New game for wordies

My DS sent me this link today, and I love it. Semantle, https://semantle.novalis.org/

Give it a try. Semantle is a play on semantics.

Okay, I tried this and found the secret word in 31 guesses, but I have no idea how I did it. Is there strategy involved?

I enjoyed it-- got my first word in 12 guesses.

I need a little more time to carve out a strategy-- but the lower the match score, the wider you cast your net. As the match score goes up, it starts narrowing quickly.

Are you aware of the German Romantic author who called himself Novalis (pseudonym of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg)? He was one of my favorite German authors when I was 20. He wrote Heinrich von Ofterdingen (one of my favorite works from the German Romantic period, which includes the interior story, Klingsohr's Fairy Tale (Klingsohrs Märchen), which is very beautiful and the extreme of Romanticism. It is available now in translation, but not when I first read it.

Novalis also wrote Hymnen an die Nacht, which is also beautiful and one of the best examples of extreme Romanticism.

The Romantic Period in literature started in Germany and was brought to England by Coleridge, who visited Germany during this period.

I think 12 and 31 are both very good. I took 29, my son took 70, my two brothers were 40 and 51, my sister hasnt reported in, she had to put it down for patients.

Sorry Lars, I havent read him. Will check it out.

I suspect I am hooked-- i wish there was a dordle for semantle. Demantle?

At 14 tries it says 966/1000 and shows a green bar. Is that a win? Can't say I understand this at all.

Im hooked too. 17 guesses for today’s word.

DLM-- you are getting close but not there yet.

The instructions explain that until you get within the top 1000 words mostly closely matching the secret word (as determined by Word2vec), you will only get a (cold) indicator under the Getting Close heading. Once you are within the top 1000, it displays the rank.

966/1000 is pretty close. Your last word could be a close synonym or a variation/different tense of the word. (My 11th move had a rank of 999/1000.. and it was the difference of a plural vs not.

This is what you will see when you have found the secret word (arrows are my additions)

Anyone tried Heardle https://www.heardle.app/? I guessed The Ohio State Fight Song. It was something by Kanye West. Obviously, I’m not a candidate for enjoying Heardle!

I didn't try Heardle because I am woefully ignorant of most music. It would be fun for someone who likes music, though. Laughing at the Ohio State Fight Song guess...I mean, it could have been right...

Yeah, I did it the first day it was shared here-- got Fleetwood Mac right away but I haven't tried it again. I am not good with song titles/artists.

I am terrible at recognizing songs so I havent tried Heardle. At my work, when we are in a testing cycle ,we have hour long daily calls and there is always trivia while people gather, I inwardly groan when it is music trivia.

Maybe I got lucky? Got it in 5.

@Annie Deighnaugh, that's flippin' amazing! I must not understand how to play.

For those of us at a different, um, academic level, now there’s Taylordle.

I have played the last few days and I have arrived at the same place Localeater is.. the total number of moves isn't all that important. If you do fast word association, you will have a higher number-- if you are a combo of lucky AND think about it deeply (as i did on my first), you may get a low number. The fun is in narrowing in to the secret word.

LOL Sue.. i wouldnt come up with a single word beyond swift.
