It's a cool thing, but not all EV producers support this. In particular, Tesla specifically says that if you use the car to provide backup power to your house it can void the warranty on the car battery. I believe it has to do with the fact that doing this could lead to degradation of the battery, which may be an issue for other EV batteries unless the manufacturer specifically endorses it. Having survived several hurricanes ( and the resulting power outages), I wonder how many appliances and how long you will need to use this? Based on the floor plan of our home, the size of the ac, the fridge, the water heater, the freezer, we bought a generator to supply power. We did buy one big enough to poser the two ac units, using one room ac and staying only in that room in the evening.

Of course I could never power my entire house from the EV, just want to power it for a short time in case of an emergency. I would only be trying to power some of the heat and some lights.

I wasn’t sure whether you were thinking you could power the whole house. I saw that commercial and shook my head. It does suggest the whole house can be powered. We called our electrician to examine our current house and help us with a solution based on the size of our generator and the systems we would need most. An appointment with your electrician can answer questions for your specific needs.

@kudzu9, Tesla also sells the Tesla Wall, so it’s not beneficial to their business model to have people using their cars as batteries. Our EV’s battery’s worth at least three Tesla Walls.
