Huge dilemma: White vs *dare I say it* BEIGE kitchen cabinets

last modified: 3 years ago

I love simple, modern and warm. I started choosing my kitchen finishes with the quartz countertop. i chose Ethereal Glow - slightly offwhite with subtle gray & gold veining. The issue now is that its a whiter white than planned. I think the best paint match is chantilly lace. HOWEVER, my kitchen is NORTH FACING. an entirely chantilly white kitchen is not the feel i wanted. plus, ill have to continue chantilly everywhere- doors, trim- in our open concept ranch. Id prefer White Dove.

soooo…. do i stick it out with white, or do i risk a warmer color on the cabinets?!

Go beige! To me, it looks rich and beautifully classic.

I love a warmer white cab. We did Linen white BM and love it.

My original plan was White Dove everything, however its too off/yellow with the counter. i believe ill have to match it or go deeper on the cabinet to contrast. eeek!

Sooo...has the counter been installed? Are you sure you want to stick with that one instead of one that will give you more of a choice on cab color?

I think im too far down the road to change it now. it is BEAUTIFUL- i love the soft veining. its just the white! :(. i must say, im loving the modern take on cream/greige/beige kitchens but i worry it will date quickly & also be harder to coordinate with.

Don't worry about it being "dated"! As long as you do a quality job, and you love it, it will work for you through the years.

Call it “putty” or “mushroom” and it’s automatically hip.

I think white. White is always in style and beige can look dirty.

White can look dirty too. The best way to decide on a color is to view it on a large sample in your room with your lighting.

If you do decide on white, then there are hundreds of whites to choose from, and it's important to select the one that works best.

Don't look at that paint sample in a horizontal position.

You need to be sure you get that beige right or you might end up with a color you don't love when everything is done.

I did beiges in 2 bathroom vanities. One I got right and the other I didn't. I will be repainting one of them as it turned very pink once installed. The white toilet next to it highlights the pink and it didn't end up looking as good with the counters. Luckily the cabinet makers will come to remove the door/drawer panels and fillers and repaint at their workshop. It will get repainted in Chantilly Lace.

I just built and used BM Chantilly Lace in a north facing kitchen and throughout the house on trim and doors. My counters are Taj Mahal quartzite.

Where is your lighting? I see none ...

Since this photo was taken potlights were installed @ 4K. there are 6 in the kitchen, 4 in the dining nook, and 3 pendants over the island.

how does chantilly feel facing north? would you say your kitchen feels more ”crisp” or ”soft”?

Glad to hear you have lighting!

In the kitchen the Chantilly Lace is perfect. In some other areas of the house the baseboard against the medium wood floors does look a bit crisp, but the white color was decided based on how it looked in the kitchen which is a good size and u-shaped.

The other whites I tested looked dirty/dull in the kitchen.

I think location makes a difference. I am in FL and have 3 large windows in the kitchen, taking up most of one wall in the U, so although the kitchen faces north, it still gets lots of light.

There are hundreds of available shades between white and beige. I think a very soft (off) white will be beautiful. Consider SW Ivory Lace or SW Neutral Ground

I have a north facing kitchen. Chantilly Lace is the standard white that our custom cabinet maker uses. It was not at all what I wanted (he bought in a CL sample door), very cold and stark in my space. Simply White looks just white in my kitchen (uppers only)...because it's not next to a "real pure white" anywhere. Paint large samples and trust your eye.

Beige would look amazing with your choice of counter-tops and in my opinion, be the best choice. It's a classic and timeless colour that will carry through trends while keeping the space warm and inviting. I highly suggest you paint very large sample boards in various shades you like and place them throughout your kitchen along side your other samples to see how they interact with the lighting at different times and how well they play with your other materials and finishes.

I love the beige trend (and used it in my mudroom), but it is a trend. Do it if YOU love it truly! Something that reads a purer white will be truly more "timeless", but I don't think it has to be chantilly lace white. How about SW Alabaster?

@stellarceline i will look at SW alabaster before fully deciding… but it seems any white with a drop of yellow looks off. im not sure that the quartz doesnt have a very slight pinky undertone??

I disagree that beige is a trend. And if you like something it doesn't matter if it is a trend or not. The only downside to using a trend is that you see it everywhere, but if it's not a trend, it's hard to find.

Alabaster is more greige than yellow, IMO, but of course you will have to have a real sample against the quartz to see how they react to each other!

SW Alabaster looks like neon yellow in my house!

I have Alabaster cabinets and trim and it's a soft warm white.
