To transition wood floor direction at step threshold or not? Plz help!

I am putting down LVP soon. In the hall and living, the floor will run from front of the house to back. However, the dining area (and kitchen, and the TV room behind at the end of the hall), are on the same level (which is different from both the hall (highest) and living room (lowest). The kitchen and TV room are together, and are wide. Should I change the direction of the floor, and run it across the house for these rooms? Or keep it all consistent and one direction? If it ran in different direction, the transition would occur at a step (not just a threshold).

What color is the LVT you are planning to install?

Are you going to do something with the rock wall BEFORE you place vinyl on the floor? Taking it down creates a mess and could damage the new floors.

Also, I'd consider painting the balusters on your railing.

IMO think about a redo of the kitchen first or at least get enough flooring to redo later as for direction IMO that step up is a tripping hazard so maybe changing direction of the flooring would make it obvious .Before choosing flooring all that lighting needs to be updated to LED 4000K so the color you choose is actully right. I also wonder if the stone is staying. IMO this is huge undertaking and before doing it make sure you love everything else and how it is for your life.

From a safety perspective, anytime there's a change in elevation where there is no visual clue (like a railing/banister) I strongly recommend you change the direction of the flooring so folks don't trip up/fall down. Based on your 2nd pic, sunken living room and entrance hall follow direction of arrows, dining room, kitchen and family/fireplace room follow the arrows. Keep in mind: If you end up removing the carpet on the staircase and refinish treads to match your floors without adding a runner, the last tread and hallway floor will be running in same direction.

    Thanks for these comments !!

very light lvp. we are on an incredibly tight budget so unfort dont have a lot of options (please advise if you know of a great lvp!!!). i am considering megaclic grand collection in ash color… (the one on the left. the sample on right is much darker with no light…)

the kitchen cabinets will stay (ill stain them slightly darker walnut) but new counters (ceasarstone clamshell, sold at ikea for 1/2 the price)

the rock fireplace going -before floors :-)

good point that changing the direction might help with the trip hazard…

lvp will also be on stairs and upstairs.

railings will change too. going for something like this but trying to find someone to build it for not crazy $

Check your local building codes to make sure that type of system is ok with your staircase. In some cases because it's "climbable" it's not to code - kids can climb & fall over railing... A licensed contractor should be able to provide direction.
