Rate my dining room! Open to suggestions too

Hi,

I recently moved into my new house, and this is how I've set up my dining room. I was going for a smoky bar feel. Please let me know what you all think!

Are you a single guy, Mike? Put the light on a dimmer for more romance if you entertain ladies or couples. I'd like to see the wine bottles in a wine rack, but if they're all open, you'd better get busy drinking them! Do you have an area rug under the table? What about chair upholstery? We can't see it. Lower the cat/wine poster. If you think it is to be permanent, have it framed and matted. It should hang 5" above the bar, but you'll want to move the wine bottles to do that; try a pair of vertical racks right and left of the poster.

Thank you. The bottles are actually empty haha. I painted them black and put the corks back in just for decoration. There is a dimmer. I put it at its brightest, so that the photo would be clearer. You're right, the print can go a little lower. What about the cat statue? Is it too much?

If you lower the print, move the cat statue closer to the right edge of the print. I think that will be a fun look.

    Is that a real plant?

Yes, both plants are real. I guess I can give that a try, thanks.

Looks to be a smaller space? The cabinets are pretty dark and might make it feel smaller. Could someday consider a lighter color to repaint to help it feel bigger. Always a fan of cat decor lol

I suggest removing the trailing ivy and put up a few rustic baskets on top of the two cabinets to give it a rustic winery feel.

Very cool and yes do add two antique baskets above the cabinets, and eliminate the plant.

If going for a bar feel you could also paint the walls a darker color. Dining rooms are one room that can go pretty dark.

If you really like that cat graphic, it might look better in the room in a larger size

If you plan to display wine bottles there are lots of racks on the market that are wall mounted that can add to your display.

If you'd like a clever way to use old wine bottles here are some examples.

They can be mounted on the wall with tinted liquid to make a very effective graphic.

Years ago you could purchase a metal rack and assemble your own wine bottle chandelier. You might still find one on Etsy.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. Should I scrap the whole cat theme altogether?

Lowering the light over the table, would make it more intimate and cozy.

Are you still living at your parents???

No...as mentioned in the post, I just moved into my house. What do you mean by that?

Love the cat theme, and I think you’re on a good track with the little tweaks suggested here. Nice ambiance.

Try fewer of the black bottles- either 3 or 5 of varied sizes- grouped on one side with the statue on the other. A little blank space between the displays and the cabinets would help the items show up.
Years ago we visited a German vineyard whose signature product came in a black cat- shaped bottle. That would be a fun addition if you could find it for sale!

Sounds fun. What's the name of the vineyard?

    I like the cat theme!

Will your plants thrive in so little light? Regarding the dark, smokey bar feeling and your decor, less is more.

Since the cabinetry and table/chair color are so different they don't achieve much harmony. The lighting fixture above the table doesn't quite seem to fit and is undersized from what I can tell in the photo.

I knew I would get that comment. I need to sand down and stain the table so that it matches the cabinets. It's just a lot of work that I haven't got around to yet,

There is actually a lot of light in the room. It's perfect for plants.

The table doesn't need to match the cabinets.

get rid of the empty bottles and put a small lamp and plant , with cat statue on whatever it is you have those bottles sitting on

What about putting a shelf where the cat picture is, lean the cat pick on shelf and plants on it.

I would change the light fixture

Instead of the two closed cabinets on each side, why not have the cabinets uppers be open shelf where you can put your bottles. Change chandelier to be a linear style and lowered slightly.

I like the cat art and sculpture. I do think the art might need to be moved a little lower. I believe you typically want art at about 60" on center (average eye level) and sometimes a little lower over furniture.

I like the mixture of different wood tone in the furniture and cabinets. I think it gives a little depth to the room.

I am not keen at all, especially of bottles row, chandelier and small picture.

Here is some nice inspiration photo, I would follow .

Open shelves on the top of your tall cabinets. Decorate with nice dishes. Paint chairs and table legs with black.

That's not really my style but thank you for the suggestion. I'm going for a smoky bar feel. The painting isn't available in larger sizes because it comes from a 120 year old advertisement, and can only be stretched so much before the resolution would be off.

I've bought wine racks and will be putting them on both sides of the painting, which will look a lot better. The bottles are also gonna be removed, and I'm gonna be putting empty Hendricks Gin bottles with flowers underneath the art. I'll post a photo when I'm done.

You can make your wall art bigger with frame and mat.
