How about a low pile carpet cut to size and trimmed? I think a camel color would look good.

Since you have a lot of traditional pieces in the dining room already, you could probably go with a rug that is a little different to balance all of that. It looks like the rug will pull out some of the blues and browns in your paper. There may be a touch of green in the rug as well....hard to tell.

Get a rug you love. Don’t worry about being matchy-matchy to the wallpaper or getting a solid (unless you want that). There are so many rugs that would look amazing. What do you like?

Such a beautiful space. Since you mentioned "fun or a bit of color," I would hate to see you default to the ubiquitous, boring (IMO) seagrass or solid color rug. You didn't mention budget or size, so I didn't sort for either; the top hits are always from less than high quality sources, but lots of us have rugs from some of these sites and they are fine enough.

You know the trick about buying the smallest rug in the pattern you can get to check on color, quality, pattern, etc.? Then returns are really easy and less expensive!

If it is in your budget a wool short velvet cut broadloom cut and bound, in one of colors of the paper would look nice. I would not do a loop because a chair leg could snag and pull it.

@Jilly That is what I want to do but not sure I can pull it off. I do happen to love green and blue. I happen to have 2 green velvet sofas in my big room so I thought I went off the safe route there and love them. I do have a lot of traditional but also very electec and wondered if an animal print might be too much. I would like to keep under $2,500 if possible - of course I shop at Homegoods as well and always love a deal.

@Carole Thank you for taking the time to look. I think that is gold instead of brown in the wallpaper but there is some black. But I do think it could blend.

Broadloom is just carpet normally installed wall to wall.

An animal print would be nice--I just did a leopard print bound in black for a client's dining room. It looks great with a patterned wallpaper.

I wouldn’t discount a sea grass or jute rug so quickly, it would add a lovely texture, carry a nature theme from the wallpaper into that room, along with your awesome cabbage ware. And there are dyed jute rugs out there, I have a navy one

Here is a great quote from Bunny Williams: “Rooms should have spontaneity. Nothing quite matches, but it blends”. I think you need some pattern on the rug in your dining room. I love jute and sea grass, but it seems like a missed opportunity to not use something else in your space. If you decide to go with jute, at least get a rug with a blue or green binding on the edge.

Another idea would be to get a persian/oriental/oushak or striped rug for the dining room. Something in the blue/green colorway. As Kendrah noted, Bunny Williams' quote to get something to blend, rather than match is much more interesting.

@Diana Bier Interiors, LLC I love a little animal print in every room however big or tiny. I wish Houzz would allow us to load photos so I could show you all. I was thinking maybe a blue / white zebra or do you think too much and just go with a chetah.

I wouldn't do blue and white--I think you need some warmth in the room so I'd select a cheetah/leopard/antelope in warm tones, or a multi-colored oushak like the links above.

You might also consider painting the dining room in a darker color, maybe blue or green, to balance off the drama in the wallpaper in the foyer.

@Diana Bier Interiors, LLC Thank you for your input Diana and suggestions and fresh ideas. And @roarah thank you as well for the ideas. I have written to Houzz about why we cannot load photos. I wanted to show you all I did paint my open study off the foyer a very dark Van Duesen blue by BM but because my dining room was so dark before I used BM White Dove in it for a break but I do love dark walls and may paint again in the future. Maybe some dark velvet draperies would be pretty in the DR for drama or is that too much with white dove. My house is very open and the DR and study flank each side of the foyer as you enter the house with case openings.

In the meantime I have a technical question for everyone.

My dining room is 15'9" x 12'4". I was thinking I needed a 9x12 rug until I tried one and it is about 6" too wide. I will have to move my funiture to place it on top. uggg it is all so heavy but I want to do the right thing. So that leaves me to find a 8 foot to 8'6 x 12 or 13' rug which is not easy to find on the width.

SHOULD I bite the bullet and go for a 10x14 for this size room and just move everything again - then the funiture would rest on top.

Just wondering what is the right size for scale of room.

I have been playing with the RugsDirect site and placing rugs in the room and downloading - I will see if I can place them here and maybe folks will vote on them. I like all of yours - what site? Maybe I can place it in the room. Here are a few I have done. I would love for anyone to pick their top 2. I couple of them may seem like I am jumping off a cliff with that green and white vinyl check but it was fun. Just trying to gain some direction and input. I realize we all have different tastes. I could not find the animal print I was looking for but gave a couple a try.

I like the blue zebra you posted, but do I see an animal print in the adjacent room? If so, I wouldn't do another. I also like the multicolor with a bit of gold/yellow. You might want to add numbers by your pics so people can easily i.d. their favorites. Maybe also move your chairs around so one of the lighter ones is in the foreground, since your new chairs will be lighter. Your home is simply gorgeous!!

I love the brown and black leopard rug you posted. I would suggest using it and installing a green grasscloth wallpaper.

Seeing the Zebra in the other room, I would forgo any other animal print in the dining room. Before you do anything….I would follow Diana Bier’s advice: wallpaper your dining room walls in a fresh bright green grass cloth. THEN rug shop. Your rug choice might become more clear….
