Turning Formal Dining Room into Sitting Area need help

I am not keeping the blue cabinet in the room. I’am changing the floor to the sample you see on the ground. I wanted to maybe get four club chairs. Maybe a love seat l. Was thinking of keeping the yellow curtains and also maybe having a wine bar or liquor bar in the room and maybe a table we can place games on. Also want a electric fireplace.’the room is 14-7x 11x0 I would be happy with any suggestions

Ouch! The differences in the wood would not look good.

Keep it simple and don't try to jam too much into such a small space. Four chairs, max, no loveseat. I don't understand the flooring choice. Are you keeping the adjacent flooring? Then it should match so you don't break up the flow. We need to see the other side of the space so please add that photo to get the best suggestions.

    Here's a palette like yours:

Alternative layout for small, narrow space--window seating with curtains flanking window + couch. Measure, measure, measure. What you're proposing is going to be too crowded:

I agree a really bad choice for flooring next to what you already have .As for the rest where do you eat now when you have guests? I need a bit more info and a floor plan to sacle showing all windows doorways and measurements . I assume you have a FR somehere so show that on the floor plan.

The floor that I do have is discontinued So I have to go with something else. We don’t really have guest and if we do we have a huge breakfast bar. What is a FR?

@Thanks for the good questions, Patricia. OP needs to think through use, layout, flooring in particular. We need a photo taken from the window side of the room.

Here’s the floor plan We do not have French doors though It’s opened

If anyone has a better choice for flooring I am up for suggestions. I am not doing carpet anymore because I have dogs

Just to help better understand your vision: You said you don't have guests. Who are the four people you imagine sitting in this room together? What other living room, den, family room areas are already in this house and how will this room be different? What time of day will this space be used?

Thank you for the helpful photo. Honestly, keep looking for an approximate match to the dark floors and put a big area rug over it or just upgrade the carpeting in that room. The wood contrast will look terrible. Don't do it.

Are you planning to watch TV in here? "Flex rooms" usually wind up being rooms nobody goes to. I responded to the sitting room comment you made, which made me envision a space where multiple people could sit and talk when you have company or go to read privately or make a phone call. Do a Houzz or Google search for "small, narrow family room."

Here's the order of tackling this space:

--Determine the day to day use as well as entertainment use. Is it a family room, sitting room, or den with bookcases? How will you spend your time in there? Here's a possible layout where you could have a narrow table by the window for eating, working on laptop. The built-in bookcases are great and give the feeling of a sitting room if that's what you meant.

--As an experiment, pick out four chairs online or a sofa you like online and measure out those dimensions on your graph layout. You will soon discover how small a space you're dealing with. It could be cozy, but it certainly won't accommodate a pool table and some of the other add-ons you have in mind. After all, it was a space for a dining table and chairs and maybe a sideboard. If you thought you could fit a pool table in there, think again. Players have long poles they pull back and need way more space than you have.

--Decide on flooring. Either you match it, or closely match it and cover with a large area rug, or you upgrade the wall to wall carpeting.

Maybe a better idea might be to use a natural stone? If you did, I would find something that has some darker tones so as not to have a big shock in color. I also love brick. If not, look for a flooring that has the tone of your floor along with another tone or two. There should be something so as they can relate to each other.

Try a stone look instead of wood. We put this brand in our kitchen next to a wood floor and it looks great.https://www.lowes.com/pd/SMARTCORE-Half-Moon-Marble-12-in-x-24-in-Water-Resistant-Luxury-Vinyl-Tile-19-63-sq-ft/5001939995

I wasn’t planning a pool table in there. I was saying maybe a little table for board games. Basically this will be for a couple of friends coming over and maybe having some wine and maybe playing a board game. Now I really need help with the flooring.

If you're thinking wine bar and board games, I would position comfortable seating around a table that would be a good height for wine tasting and playing games - relatively tall coffee table or cafe table.

Scaled down, with apartment sized furnishings, you could do an intimate bar/game room.

    Check some hanging curtain guide

    My curtains are hung wrong?

Anyone like the new flooring I picked?

Kristy, it is a good combo. However it is on two levels. If I were to use it I would turn the direction of the new floor so it runs opposite of the current floor (perpendicular vs. horizontal).

I think a set up like this would look nice in your space.

I’d do some sort of pattern different than the other flooring, but coordinating. You could use any material — linoleum, tile, wood, faux wood.

Or a creative tile, with area rug for softness…

Kristy - I think the new flooring you picked looks good.

What do you think of the four club chair pic just posted below? Honestly, those set ups remind me of institutional settinfs like an airport lounge or a chain hotel lobby. I dont think they look all that inviting. I’d prefer two chairs and some other kind of seating.

I think you found a solution that work.

It's a matter preference, 4 club chairs or a sofa and two chairs.

It's a small area so be mindful of size of furniture. It's amazing how large pieces don't look large in a showroom. So make to measure.

Kristy Gawura, I like the height of your curtains. I know a lot say to hang at the ceiling or puddle on the floor, but I detest both styles.

That looks like the same floor, good job/

I am still open to ideas. If you can post some pics on here that would be nice 😊

I love your idea of a game table. I like all three of these looks. The first photo with the club chairs needs a higher table for games.
