Exterior color for Tudor revival?

last modified: 3 years ago

Hi all - We need to paint the exterior of our home (paint is faded and in bad shape), and I’d love some advice. We live in a 1935 Tudor(ish) revival. I say ”ish” because I’m not sure that front porch and screen door really fit, but most of the homes in our neighborhood are tudors, so I think ours is supposed to be in that category. Not sure if the porch was an addition…

I am considering two options:

1) Paint similar to the current colors…Dark brown trim and shutters + off-white field and windows. We would get rid of the brown storm windows. Questions if we go this route: Does anybody have any suggestions for a nice dark brown color and an off-white? I want to go darker and richer and less red-toned with the brown. Also, I’m considering painting the window trim the same brown instead of off-white (leaving the windows themselves off-white). Right now, everything on the windows is off-white, except for the storm windows. Thoughts?

OR

2) Find a different color to replace brown for the trim… possibly a dark warm gray? There are some gray tones in the brick, so it could work. BUT this would require a lot more creativity in choosing a color on my part, and I’m not sure I want this much change.

Would love any thoughts you have, even if unrelated to my questions! Thanks!

    Cute, welcoming house!

I like the color of the stucco and the posts. I would go with a softer warm medium gray for the timbers. I agree the storm windows should be the same as the window trim. I would remove the shutter. It doesn't fit the window and It isn't adding to the appeal.

    Good luck.

Our (very British) decorator chose Benjamin Moore's Oxford Brown for our Tudor trim. The stucco in between was coloured and wasn't re-painted. It's a cream colour.

It's a cute house! I think charcoal would look lovely with the brick. Can you paint the windows? I notice that two of them have brown trim, so if you change colors you'll want to paint them as well. I think charcoal would look lovely with your brick and roof. Similar to what @houssaon mocked, but maybe a bit darker.

I think since your roof is gray you could definitely change the brown elements to gray. Look at Benjamin Moore's Historic Colors. Amherst Gray and Chelsea Gray HC-167 and 168 respectively. They also have a lot of browns from HC-67 - HC-72 if you decide to stick with brown. The shutters could definitely go if the brick isn't discolored underneath. The stucco color is fine the way it is although if you paint the wood trim gray the stucco may need to be less yellow. Paint some scrap pieces of wood and stick them to the ones that are there temporarily. Then go out to the street to look at them. Sunlight washes out colors so you will probably want a darker color than you might think.

Here are a vaiety of Tudor style homes that have color schemes that might work with your home.

This house below has limewash on the brick portion of the home.

This house has also limewashed the brick but in a taupe gray color.

    Charming home!

I like this taupe combo (I can’t tell if the timber accents are dark brown or dark gray):

I think those tones would look great with your brick.

Wow! Thanks, everyone. Very helpful and thoughtful feedback. I think I like the idea of the darker charcoal gray trim, but red & gray is not necessarily my favorite color combo. I may see if I can find a dark gray that leans brown. Totally agree that gray suits the roof better. I hadn’t thought about removing the shutters, but it looks like the brick is fine underneath, so I’ll give that a try. Do tudors typically not have shutters?

One follow up: For the windows, we are definitely removing the storm windows (which are brown in the pictures I uploaded). Underneath the storm windows, the windows and window trim are all the same creamy white as the stucco. Would you (1) keep the windows and window trim all white, (2) paint them all brown/gray, or (3) mix the two (i.e., brown/gray window trim, white windows)? Does that make sense? Note the white plantation shutters inside.

This house down the street from us is my inspiration for window paint option #3, if this helps you visualize what I’m talking about. Also a nice dark brown trim.

    Thanks!
