What does the schedule say? If they want you to make your own English box, they should provide information about how big it should be, etc. I expect you could make one from a shoebox if they aren't providing specifics.

You would probably be dq'ed if you did it the way one photo from the early 1900s showed:

A regular box, but the surface under the blooms was fresh green moss.

Prepare the bed for a large number of roses in a continuous bed by spading soil to a depth of about 12 inches. Planting holes should be dug in the prepared bed. In the planting hole, make a small mound of prepared soil. Spread the roots out over the mound and place the plant at the proper depth.

This sort of elaborate work and result are not my thing, but I will admit that the results are interesting.
