Hi Beth - I’m posting just to keep this current in hopes a pro will help you. As an observer, I find a discrepancy between your mantle and surround (traditional) with the vibe of the wood in the walls. The mantle/surround’s proportions and style seem off and maybe it’s part of what’s making it difficult for you. At first glance, I’d remove it, but that’s just my 2 cents.

Hi. You may want to add a picture showing more of the room as well. Perhaps a comfy chair to one side and a large plant to the other? Lighting? Move stuff around and take pictures… that helped me see when what’s off in our rooms. I’d move the TV but I know that’s not always everyone’s preference.

The fireplace surround is pretty overwhelming for that wall. The mantel is too high for the room. Not sure the wallpaper is effective.

I'd remove the end tables and put a large tree on one side, either a ladder or basket with blankets on the other. That will add variety of height and texture.
