Front Door Paint Color

Hi! We tried sanding and re-staining these doors, but it isn't going to work and so we decided we have to paint them. We think the dark stain on the right makes the space look too dark, but we can't decide on a color. What would you choose? There are 2 sets of french doors.

A soft, cool burgundy or a lighter shade of your shutter color.

Beautiful home! I’m curious why the stain didn’t work; I think that’s the best look for those doors. Did you hire a pro? What kind of wood are they?

I would try SW Black Fox. In a satin finish. It is a deep brown/black. I think it would work well. The doors to the right I would paint the same color or near the stucco color.

I love Tricorn - Sherwin Williams on a front door. Or choose the same color as your railings. Stunning house. Sorry the stain didn't work for whatever reason.

    Thanks Everyone!

This is what the stain looked like. There were a few patches where it just didnt take, and we don't know why.

Could the downspouts be painted the house color?

Staining is really the right solution for these doors but you have to use the correct materials to be successful. The paint is going to peel and then you will have a bigger job to address. If you can't do it call in a professional.

That looks like patching and not the kind that takes stain properly. So if you want stained look, get a good door refinisher and he/she can fix it up nicely. Here are some inspirational photos.

In case it wasn't obvious, the front door needs to stand out with the darker color and the secondary doors get color that blends into facade so it isn't confused as entry point.

Thanks Flo! You’re right, all of the inspiration photos you shared have the side doors blending in. Maybe that was the issue we were facing too that didn’t look quite right. With both doors the same shade your eye gets confused.

A beautiful home Elaine. I think you should get front door right then move to doors in the right as you face the entrance. That might get one shade darker than the body of the home.

I was thinking a deep rust color to coordinate with the exposed aggregate steps.

Get a sample of SW Black Fox and check it out. Go to www.samplize.com
Might try getting Tricorn Black and a color slightly darker than your stucco for other doors. Great way to check out colors. I wouldn’t emphasize the orange tones in your aggregate walkway. Stick with your house color palette.

Btw, Black Fox is very dark.

Oh, too bad about the stain, that would have been the best look.

I like the black inspiration photos. Find a soft black, something that will match your rail. Note that gloss is going to show every tiny flaw, so satin or matte would be a good choice (and will soften it more).

But it just is a bit softer than pure black. It might be a good choice with your trim.

Yes, satin finish is my preference.

Its funny, we just painted the interior accent wall in the dining room which is through the doors on the right Iron Ore.

Oh also! I think the shutter/trim color is SW 7514 Foothills

here are a bunch of photoshops. see what you like.

Urbane Bronze might look better than black fox

    Black

buy a new iron door like this one!

I also like a really soft blush tone that leans on the gray side of pink. if that makes sense

here's a green. I think some colorful flowers in the bed and pots would make a huge difference in overall appeal

Wow thank you so much everyone! I love the look of the iron door but they’re a little too expensive. Maybe someday!

I think a lighter color would look wonderful, if they can’t be stained. Something in the family of your shutter color.

Sophisticated and understated, not whimsical, for this stunning, elegant house.

(This last one is Farrow & Ball Pigeon.)

But I’m still thinking you should get a pro to figure out how to stain them. :)

ETA: Your front doors are very clearly the entry point … I really don’t think anyone would be confused by the other set of doors and walk right past the front ones.

Wow the last two homes are beautiful. I love the creamy white color of the houses and the color of the shutters on the one with lanterns on either side of the door.

i think the lighter grayish/sage tones would look nice w/the darker gray you currently have.

see if you like any of these

Thanks! The shutter and downspout color is foothills. I think I took this picture when the sun was behind the house
