From what I've read, the bottom of the shade should be right above your shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed.

You have to take into consideration the height of the bedside table to answer this question. It's not JUST the lamp that will put the light where a bed reader will need it to be.

Depends on the heght of the lamp, with shade, table and headboard.

I think Grandma's lamps are beautiful, too. How does your daughter feel about them ? You could try using them with new shades for a fresh look.

Like many of us, DD can’t look at the lamps in a vacuum. They are Gma’s lamps and therefore totally passe. Nevertheless, she isn’t agitating to get rid of them.

nekotish, I had wall-mounted swing arm lamps once and did not like them at all. I love the looks, I love the concept, but I found that the light was always in my eyes. Perhaps they were mounted too high. Whatever the reason, I’ve shied way from them ever since.

What shades would y’all suggest?

Bedside lamps should be a bit taller or a bit shorter than the top line of the headboard (according to interior decorators). Mine are taller, makes for better reading in bed.

I also like grandmas lamp. I'd just buy a linen drum shade for it.

But....if you want ideas for a new lamp...? and think white would be too stark...how about a black desk lamp. Desk lamps next to a bed have been a big presence @ show rooms lately.

Nicole, nice lamp, but the room needs the lamps for lighting. It only has one window. eastern exposure, that looks out onto a heavily shaded side yard. The only non-lamp lighting is a ceiling fan with a slightly amber tint, such as this

I keep meaning to change it to white with some very white (but not 4000K 🙄) LED bulbs whenever I’m at DDs, but I forget.

The current shades are white linen drum shades.

I’m happily surprised that most of your like the lamps that are already in place. One less thing to buy, and one less thing to fret over.

Bb, you have a black shade on the inspiration lamp, what about using that on Grandma’s lamps?

I went rogue and used a sort of rustic burlap shade on my sleek Lucite lamp. I love the contrast of it. It came to mind with some of the textures in your room — the wicker, etc.

It might not work with yours, just throwing ideas out … you have excellent taste and will find the perfect one. :)
