Tropical/ Neutral Living Room

Hey Houzz. We have finally moved in to our new home. Of course I need your ideas for the space. Keeping with the green wall color id like the space to feel tropical. However, the couch is gray. What could I do here? An actual tv stand for sure to start. More plants? And the tv is probably too high but I don’t want to remount. Maybe a larger tv will fill some space? Let me know all your thoughts. Love you guys.

Hey, You could do a lot to bring the tropical vibe indoors.

I understand remounting the TV is a task, and a larger one might help. I would suggest you watch the TV for a few nights and see how your neck feels. You might feel a strain on the neck in the long run. So while troublesome, remounting will be better in the long run.

You can get a lovely tropical wallpaper on the TV wall, add more plant, and taller ones at that. A wider credenza under the TV will look good and make the room look more grounded. Floating unit might seem a little ad hoc.

The grey couch is absolutely fine though. Add a white/cream throw and tropical pillows. Go for solids with an ocassional print. A dark black rug will also look great!

Add a glass coffee table and have gold accents throughout the house.

If you need help creating a moodboard, or shortlisting products, let me know!

    I hope this helps :)

What are all my color options for the accent wall? It’s already painted green so wondering if I can find a nice contact paper for it. Working on the tall tropical plant. Something that will do well in this Ohio climate even though it will be indoors.

If you have a soundbar, you can mount it like this one above the console. it will help eat up some of the gap

This is the Livingston 70" media cabinet.

    some other tropical looks

Wouldn't hurt to do a taller potted plant in the corner. other elements like this

As for actual tropical design, I came across a few rooms you may like. Try to mix a little boho into the recipe.

this has a regular tropical vibe.

This one is a bit more colorful. you could do this on just that one wall, hang your tv over this vintage 'mayan' console piece.

more boho to work w/the gray sofa.

white walls, but look at the green window treatments, plants, rattan baskets, sisal rug, colorful pillows.

bring in textured elements, sisal, rattan, knits, leather

same gray sofa from the other pic. it's the accessories that make it tropical

another gray sofa w/lots of subdued tropical colors.

    don't forget the greenery

you could do a white floating console.

With the walls redone in a bright white and all of these accessories, you get more of a modern tropical look. I like these two white living room pictures.

    Floating white console :

Or, how about this Ikea Besta hack? notice the sound bar and the other tropical-ish elements

OR one of those dark wood tropical look media consoles (like that vintage Mayan)

    or something like this one.

Most of these require the white walls. (I don't think your current green wall is doing much for the room. better to bring in brighter green elements w/a white wall)

If you prefer to keep the green walls and gray sofa (which I think are both fine) you might add some yellow and/or aqua accents - they might help tie the green and grey together. Or pillows with a fabric that has some green and gray in them.

Could this color work for the accent wall? Paired with plant pillows, an actual tv stand with the tv maybe unmounted, rattan somewhere and a big tall plant in the right corner?

a peel and stick wall paper? for that solid green? no.

just paint it. if you want a wall mural, do something w/a pattern.

get a quart of one of these colors and just paint that one wall. paint the other walls a nice white like oxford white, pure white or simply white

imo, the room looks really good already. 👌🏼

I think all you need for “tropical” is one more plant. Easy.

If you put a decorative object under the tv, I think it would fill that space and be fine. Maybe a tray - and you could also lean it a bit; but don’t puncture any wires of course! A basket there might be better... and could also bring in some of the tropical feel, with the right basket. You could also find a basket that would mimic the tv stand design, coloration, etc.; and for this, you could also look at wooden baskets or even small crates. Fun, fills the space, plus functional storage. Or alternatively, a long, low decorative statue/sculptural piece. Or maybe a large piece of rock crystal.

As far as the room in general, you could just add a few pillows. And a chair for the corner would be a very nice addition, functional as well as decorative.

So a plant, chair, pillows/throw(s) plus something on tv stand. That would basically be it for me.

Some warm tones would blend with and complement your brick (which I love the existing red brick, btw). You don’t necessarily have to bring in red, although you definitely could. I like the idea of incorporating a bit of brown. (shown below is ‘faux’ fur, of course.:)

It’s a nice space. All the best in your new home!

Update: Will be unmounting the tv and putting it on a stand. I mounted it too high and am just gonna reset. I want to do a gallery wall similar to below. With the green wall… what color picture frames should I use? I’m thinking gold or black? And should the art be all plant based. Also have order tropical and clay colored pillows. Working on the lamp as this is the only light in the room.

    Forgot photos

I like the console and it’s a good move to stand the tv on the stand. I’m not a fan of a wall mounted tv and definitely a no go if too high or any wires showing. This is a picture of my tropical living room.

Where did you find your poster? And I’m leaning towards gold picture frames for the wall

    (lots of pics!)

Whether you decide to set the TV on a console or mount it on the wall, the best height for a TV is actually the same – eye level for a person sitting on the sofa. In general, that means the center of the TV should be about 42” above the floor, regardless of the size of the TV.

I think that console is too small for your tv size. generally you want it something like this:

more proportional w/the tv is about 2/3rd the size of your console.

    Do you see the diff??

Even this one you posted, which I like, has the tv at 2/3rds.

You have a large wall but that console looks too short.

find one similar to these examples and hang the tv at the proper height. (hanging it is better if you have little ones. but if you still want to put it on a stand, then for sure you're going to need a piece that is longer. )

this is doable, but I'd still like a bit longer. if you like this style, look up caned console. Target or Wayfair

bring in a tall potted plant to one side, and replace the torchere light w/something else. a chair, a diff light, etc. Do your art like is shown in any of these pics I posted.

why not look for a vintage piece of furniture like a wood buffet or dresser, and use it?

what about something like this? notice the tv over the console, but because it's flanked by the two tall etegiers, you don't notice the smaller size of the console.

find something like this off craigslist or flea mart, and paint it your tropical colors. I also like how the furniture is arranged in the pic. you could 100% copy how this is done. on the wall across from the window, do a nice piece of art

this is a dresser from the 60's that was painted. Perfect for tropical look.

look under vintage faux bamboo furniture, bali hai pieces, or mcm tropical furniture. you may see some on sale from diff sites.

Vintage Dixie aloha dresser painted in a crisp white

I've done a few of these pieces myself.

Here's a larger dresser I did for someone else. Its a Stanley brand. I think this would be perfect for u
(On Etsy these painted pieces for for 2K now!)

they are not that difficult to do and would give you the tropical feel.

they're an ugly yellow naturally. check around and see if you can score one.

maybe you could start w/a few chairs

Wayfair has open shelving like this that would work on either side of the tv

Or, find cheaper rattan pieces that are similar that you can spray paint

here are two other layouts you can try for your furniture:

i like this tv media unit for your wall. put plants on either side of yours

some simple shelving you could do along the wall, paint it. notice the furniture layout

You might consider whitewashing the brick, that would give you a lighter, summery feel.

If that is a working fireplace, please use a paint or wash that is heat-proof.

I found my art at a Homegoods. It is a black framed canvas piece I fell in love with and very inexpensive. I was going to paint the frame gold but the black is growing on me.

I think I’m going to do gold frames

And I’m afraid to white wash the brick. Cause there’s no going back if I hate it. But I think I like the natural color. Especially if I plan to incorporate more of that color into the room also.

If you like the tropical look, keep your eyes peeled for quality vintage rattan, like the living room furniture in the Golden Girls TV show.

Update. I put the tv on a stand. Have some tropical art to replace the Mickey coming soon. And getting a tripod lamp tomorrow. But I like what it’s becoming. I think I’ll really like it when the tree gets taller

@Mallorie C Great work! Your room looks amazing. I really like your way of decorating the living space with these prints.

You mentioned that you are about to replace the Mickey. I came up with some ideas about this upcoming change.

I would add some eye catching accents on top of what you have already done. Tropical style is about bringing colours like navy blue, red, emerald green, sunny yellow, or even purple or pink.

As an alternative to these bright colours, I would hang out a floral painting with some green accents on the white background.

It would be great to learn what do you think about it :)

So this is the art I ordered that will replace the Mickey. But I’m still thinking I need maybe 3 more pieces on this wall. I like the green floral one you posted.

How about some natural shades or some wood blinds? I feel they work wonderfully with a lot of green plants and a green wall. It can make your living room feel like you're in a lush forest!

Are you able to show how your room has come along?

Hey all. I deleted the app for a bit. Showing room progress. Sorry it’s a bit dark here. Weather is gloomy.

Much has changed since my last update. I had posters up but once I changed the place of the tv I didn’t like it anymore. Tv placement has been difficult because of the couch placement. We have two vents in the living room and I’m trying not to block them. But that’s difficult and leaves me with limited options
