Could you give a little more information? Is the affected arm usable now and is it her dominant hand? Does she like to read? Does she like certain foods/sweets/treats? What's her favorite activity?

.Poor thing. Will she have to limit activities for long?

Is she into make-up, music, sports or crafts?

My go to gift for middle schoolers are small bluetooth speakers.

Aww poor kid. If you're thinking food, kids often enjoy those fruit bouquets. I think "Edible Arrangements" is one of the bigger companies doing it.

Teen magazines? A book or two to keep her occupied? I remember reading The Lord of the Rings the summer I was 13 (on my school's summer reading list along with Silent Spring). Fell in love with it.

Oh poor girl! It stinks to be laid up in summer!

Depending on your answers to Fun2B's question about dominant hand above.. maybe fun puzzles? I have given this one as a gift as summer approaches (along with a Rita's Italian Ice gift card). You could also get her DIY popsicle molds and a recipe book-- so many fun combos to make!

I also like the idea of books and magazines-- YA titles have just exploded-- especially those geared towards young girls. Unfortunately, I don't have any YA titles to share with you but if you know her interests, I could reach out to some friends who are Youth Librarians.

Another vote for Edible Arrangements. Seems to be a hit at any age.

Streaming TV or music account and a nice paid of earbuds tucked into some quality food/snack gifts, books, hair/beauty products and a fun pillow to rest her sore arm on.

At that age my DD was really into anything ”fuzzy” or plush, even in summer. Fuzzy socks, fuzzy blanket, fuzzy pillow. Snacks, of course. And craft kits, if she’s able to do them.

I'd do a gift card and she can find what she wants.

Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions. DG is a very talented athlete but i am afraid this injury/ surgery will probably end her gymnastic career. she was operated on her dominate arm and they did take cartilage from the knee. Good news is she will only be in a cast for 2 weeks but cannot lift anything heavier than a glass of milk for 6 weeks then Pt. Nicole thanks for the link great looking baskets. i now have a lot of ideas for dyi basket . maddie i need to check with her mother about the blue tooth speaker she probably already has one ! Funky great idea for a puzzel i think ill get ine here so when she comes to visit we can do it together. cyn unfortunatey she is not a big reader, unlike her twin brother who never without a book . Lake i think a special pillow is great idea. sueb what is it about fuzzy things she loves socks too and beading. yaya i actually have a lily pulitzer top i bought for her and may give it to her i know that will cheer her up. thank you all for your thoughtful ideas an suggestions. i wanted to send her something immediately after her surgery but now will wait untill i see her next weekend .

Is she too young for a SquishMallow pillow? https://squishmallows.com/ My grands are considerably younger but sometimes things like that will cross over from pre-schoolers to young teen girls.

cran, I'm sorry your granddaughter is going through this. I have a friend's daughter who just turned 12 that I buy a birthday gift for and this year was tough. Wish I could help - not much experience with this at all. Hope she recovers quickly!

cran- no suggestions but I wish your granddaughter a speedy recovery and successful physio. That is a tough age to be going through this operation and perhaps the end of a sport that she loves. She's lucky to have her grandma in her corner.

Thank you blfenton and arapaho for your kind wishes . she had her surgery and just needed to stay one night in the hospital. the surgeon took cartiage from her knee to repair her arm and has a hot pink cast on and a knee brace untill she feels stable . its going to be a tough summer for her, but the good news is after spending 24 hours in a big Boston hospital she thinks she’d like to be a nurse ! i actually think she is enjoying all the attention right now :-))
