golden hinoki turned 25% brown in 2 weeks. Landscaper says its from be

Landscaper planted two 5-foot golden hinoki trees in backyard, and they are rapidly covered in brown patches within 2 weeks since planting. Trees were planted on May 20. Landscaper says nothing to worry about, that the browning is caused by "handling during transport and planting". Could that be a legitimate reason?

Describe your watering routine - how are you verifying that the water you are putting down is actually penetrating all the way down to the roots?

The discoloration certainly could be from mishandling - it happens. But that would be the fault of the landscaper, who should know how to handle and plant trees and shrubs without excessive damage. If treated properly, there should be NO damage or discoloration!

However the photos are not overly revealing about the extent of the damage (a full shot of the entire tree would be better) nor can we see clearly how the tree(s) was planted. And as noted, the watering could be off as well but that rarely produces random brown, dried patches.

Curb appeal/landscaping help!

I think you are getting great input on your landscaping but your curb appeal needs other work as well. Right now your house says, " Two cars live here!" Your garage takes up half the front facade and is the major feature of the the house. You need to minimize it and move the focus to the front door where the human beings come. I would select a darker tan that is a few value steps lighter than the brick but blends with the brick. A note here- in choosing colors to blend with brick you have to pick a color that goes with the whole thing. If you try to match one color from the brick even if it is the predominate brick color all the other colors in the brick will pop our. Sample some colors and stand across the street to see which one works best. Next use a bright color on the front door to command attention to the entrance. Make sure the ceiling is painted a very light color to reflect light back into the entry vestibule. A sky light would be good for light but it would become an unwelcome protuberance on the roof. This is where you landscaping can help out. Some eye-catching planting on the right side of the house will also take your eye away from the huge garage door.

Oooh, thank you Bobbi, I can't tell you how much compliments mean from you guys. I was sort of shaking in my boots posting them. What worries me is that the old brown was so out there and trendy when I did it in 1980, I just wonder how long it will be before I look at the white and wonder where my head was. Of course in 32 years I very much doubt I will be here anyway. The new brown bathmat is beside the vanity, if you look hard and the other towels are reflected in the mirror, I have the blue in the handtowel that I have a matching towel and bathmat for but the sand coloured one I have had for a while although it is hardly used. I used to call it champagne, but now I have the beach theme it has become sand - teehee. I rang the ottoman guy last week and he assured me he has been onto his company about it, the fabric has been ordered so it should be safe. While I have the use of the other one I'm not that fussed, just so long as I know for sure they have the fabric under control. The last thing I want to do is to have to find new fabric - I don't think I could even handle thinking about it. This is the orginal fabric I chose but then decided it might be too busy with any artwork on the walls. Also a photo of the lights hanging. Now they are done, I actually quite enjoyed putting them together although it was time consuming, at lease they came with brilliant instructions.

Bobbi - black is a pretty universal colour so I wouldn't have a problem with it, I think you will probably just notice it less. Yes I was thinking the same colour as your furniture, which I normally don't like to see, but in your case the blue tiles will work to break that up nicely. Mary-Peggy - That is funny, a freight train, I'm thinking more waves on a beach. When something happens we all dive onto it and dump all our thoughts before running off to the next thing. Bobbi has done a lot to her kitchen fairly recently and she only has a small budget to work with so we have to keep things waaaaay down to purely cosmetic changes AND keep her focussed on her aims - now that can be like stopping a freight train!!!. Firstly, we have to zero in on her main area of discontent and that seems to be the floor which in the main, can't be changed. Personally, I'm not seeing a problem with changing the timber colour when the floor is so different, it would be no different to the floor changing to all tile or lino or any other different coloured and patterned surface. I'm really thinking this is going to work for her and solve all her issues and if she finds some brown paper or cardboard to cut to the size of the timber and puts them over some of the existing boards, she will get a good idea of how it will work. She can also put it near the doorway to check the effect with the other timber flooring. If she is still not happy with it then we go back to the drawing board

where are you.. big city name.. ambient weather matters.. so give us a flavor of where you are ...

he is correct ... but that appears to be way beyond what you should expect from a professional ... could we see a pic or two of the whole plants ...

of course.. he has no clue how they were handled before he got them ... but that is his risk not yours ...

waiting to see those extra pix .... but in the meantime i would be very unhappy about all this.. especially based on what i presume you paid him for such.... have them replaced ..imo .. on the warranty he should have given you ,..

the third pic browning is nbd.. just snip that part off.... its not really what this conversation is about ...

Live in Bayside NY -- which is part of NYC. As far as watering, we have given it a good drink everyday, but temperature has not been very hot yet here. Landscaper piled on tons of cedar mulch which he said keeps the moisture in, so we didn't want to overwater. Can't tell by looking at the mulch and haven't yet stuck my hand into it. Will post a complete picture. Im very grateful for everyone's feedback!
