Help with paint and green tiles please for living room

I am competely stuck on what colour to paint the chimney breast/walls with these green tiles…The bookcases either side are Plummett from Farrow and Ball. I did want to wallpaper to make it a lovely feature but struggling with the tiles as so striking, happy with paint as well though. Have two walls to paint as well, south facing room with lots of light as bay window opposite fireplace, its a working fire.

Things on shelves will be moving elsewhere. new sofas on order, dark navy and blue flecked tweed Please HELP 🙂🙂Thanks

I love the tiles. When i color capture the tikes on the Benjamin Moore app the read as fresh spring. The are the Two complimentary colors suggested.

Keep the color of the fireplace wall the same as the shelves.

Add a beautiful piece of art over the fireplace that has some of the tile color in the art. That should help the color of the tile look like it belongs.

Have you picked out an area rug yet?

I love the green tiles. Are you in England? Those old fireplaces are so cool.

If you have an Instagram account, peruse the Farrow & Ball account. Quite a few pictures with similar rooms.

Whatever color you choose, I’d do the built-ins, too, rather than chop it up — especially as you’ll be painting the other walls, too. So I’d either just keep it all that gray or choose an entirely different color.

Doing the entire room in Plummett:

Or Plummett for the entire fp side, the other three walls lighter (F & B Blackened, looking very purple in this room):

Just for fun, some other colors, because I love Farrow & Ball rooms. :)

    Setting Plaster

    Next two are Green Smoke

    Smoked Trout

    Duck Green

Next two are Sulking Room Pink

    Card Room Green

    Drop Cloth

Peignoir (I do like this with the off-white built-ins)

    Hague Blue

    Pigeon, a softer gray.

The Edward Bulmer account might have inspiration, too.

Love the tiles. They are so fun. I do like the blue in the post that roarah posted above. I would also like the same green as in the tiles, in that area. Once you get your sofa's, you may be able to match the dark blue of them, for that wall, and then carry the lime green from the tiles, over to the sofa with pillows, and in other areas with accessories.

That is an excellent idea…thank you

Thank you to everyone so far who has contributed and really helped🙂

I am in England in an edwardian house, I am annoyed with myself, those alcove shelves were onlydone in February and the carpenter painted them as asked by me…..I never thought about the tiles though 🙄🙄Plummet stays as too expensive to repaint and a lot of work.

    That’s understandable.

I came across this room that has Plummett walls with Hague Blue cabinets.

Of course all the natural light in there makes a big difference in tones, but it might be worth testing.

I still think you should keep that wall/built-ins all the same color and just add art and such. The Plummett rooms I posted are beautiful.

Maybe the fireplace breast in Babouche

Oh, now I like that gold with the gray, that looks good! Love how the tiles look with it.

ETA: Now I’m wondering about finding a wallpaper pattern similar to these fabrics, and using a gold (Babouche or India Yellow) on the other walls. Too much going on?

Or maybe Plummet on everything and a dark green mantel

Now I want to play with wallpaper. :D

I so wanted William Morris and still do but yet again matching up with the tiles is proving difficult! Love Bellflowers…we have no app here for putting wallpaper on walls.🙁

Is that third photo Strawberry thief by Morris?

It is, I have it on a pillow. :)

I agree — a William Morris print would be absolutely perfect in there with that tile.

Sorry, lousy mock-up, but an idea …

Or Stiffkey on the mantel, it may really be the black mantel that needs to be painted to work with the Plummet... even if you use wallpaper, which I like the idea of.

What an awful idea to paint those gorgeous tiles black and take all the personality away from your space. Glad you are keeping them. What a great bunch of other suggestions you've gotten about using color with them. It's going to be lovely!

I think that strawberry thief wallpaper looks fantastic with the green of the tiles and it seems to work with the color of your built-ins too.

I’m loving that and Seaweed. :)

There are so many others that might work, wish I could do better wallpaper mock-ups!

I thought that too….so clever everyone on here….I'm in awe 🙂

    Love this wallpaper too

Arbutus Wallpaper 216452 by William Morris & Co

Sharon, which color of Arbutus? I know of three or four.

    This is slate/russet …

    Pivot/black:

If you decided to use wallpaper, would you be painting the rest of the room Plummett?

I’m excited for you, sure hope you post updates. It’s going to be a fantastic room.

I’m really wanting to see the windows.

    HINT HINT SHARON.

Not painting the rest of the room Plummett…..my husband has just said it would be like being back on the Royal Navy warships!🙂

    Ha! 😄

Another lousy mock-up, but maybe an idea of the blue:

Strawberry Thief again (I added sides):

I think these mock ups are superb…..we are in garden with wine, its 8pm here in UK and we are loving all your expertise!,

That makes me smile! Cheers! :)

Doesn’t that SThief look good…will get a sample sent…the only thing I worry will it detract from all the lovely things we will put on our shelves! ?

What coloyr SThief is that please?

I don’t think it will … I think it’ll enhance. But yes, it’ll be good to get a sample in there because none of my mock-ups are to scale. In person, you might feel the pattern is too big and busy, and you want something calmer.

    The color is Indigo.

    I found it with black:

    Ordering now…thanks

    Ooooo, I found some other colors I wasn’t aware of! Give me a min, it’s mock-up time … :D

    last modified: 3 years ago

Of course you wouldn’t paint original tiles!

Think Strawberry Thief looks good. You might consider also papering back wall of shelves, painting back wall of shelves deeper shade on Plummett color strip or color picked from paper.

I think that seaweed print @Jilly mocked up before looks awesome.

    last modified: 3 years ago

Ok, gang … I can’t decide if I like this. I do, then I’m not sure.

Strawberry Thief in gold (with gray and green):

    What’s the vote?

ETA: Back for an encore, Seaweed with sides done. Maybe too much with the tile? I‘m feeling iffy seeing more of it. It is a cool print though. Striking.

And just saw this … the Indigo over fireplace. It is a large print!

A bar in Bristol is named after it. :D

My favorite is still the Indigo Strawberry thief one.

Yeah, I retract seaweed. ;) I love the indigo Strawberry Thief, but am wondering if that pattern is too big. What about something funky like this -- this is the wallpaper in my daughter's room (came with the house!). On the one hand, it looks like Where the Wild Things meets MJ Farm. On the other hand, it's seriously awesome.

(This is a screenshot, not my daughter's room! ha)

I like that paper! It is awesome.

I wasn’t able to get a decent mock-up to show you, but from the little I could play with, I think it’s too much green and actually clashed a bit with the tile. But … monitors don’t show colors 100% true, so it might be different in person.
