Knobs trend - satin nickel vs satin brass vs oiled bronze/b

We are about to replace all the doors in our house and possibly update our kitchen cabinets. Every designer show/article I see shows primarily satin brass knobs in kitchens and on doors. A far second is black, with nary a sight of satin nickel. We live in a suburb of Portland, OR, which is not a trend-setting locale, but does follow them. So, I'd like something that is classic with broad appeal, if we sell within five years. Your thoughts?

I'm no expert, but I am in the middle of a whole home renovation and have been doing a LOT of research. I see the satin brass/gold everywhere as well, but I'm pretty sure it's trending downwards. Black can go with everything, so I think it has a much broader appeal. We're doing all matte black door hardware, and a mix of custom wood and matte black pulls for our kitchen cabinets. I was tempted to go with brass/gold as well, but I just don't see it aging very well.

In the end though, it comes down to what you love. If you sell, and someone doesn't like your cabinet hardware, it isn't' too difficult to replace. Good luck!

Your choice should be based on what fits the style of the house and not on what the current trends are!

I built a Spanish inspired home, so for door hardware I used Emtek Sandcast Bronze in their Medium bronze patina. A dark brown without the reddish tint of oil rubbed bronze. From a distance it looks black, but has a softer look when close up.

For cabinet knobs/pulls I have different finishes depending on the room. Satin brass in kitchen and 2 bathrooms, chrome in 3 bathrooms and a color similar to the Emtek lever for some built-ins in the mudroom/laundry and hallways.

Can you show us a picture of the front of your house, or a room so we can get an idea of what style it is? I agree with @chispa, this is important when you're making this decision. Not to ruin your day, but in five years something else is likely to be popular. I have to replace all of my interior door hardware also and I don't know which way to go, either. IMO, not oil rubbed bronze unless your house is an original Craftsman.

We have a fairly traditional house built in 1991. Will restrain hardwood floors so darker and less yellow. Replacing all flat panel oak interior doors with paneled white doors. … so, it’s definitely not Craftsman, modern, or mid-Century modern. I prefer traditional to traditional style.

Correction - I prefer transitional style to traditional.
