Ideas for living room rug etc.

last modified: 3 years ago

We’ve moved a number of times over the past 30 years and collected a mashup of furnishings that sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t in each home. Our latest home, bought one year ago, may be our last before a final down-sizing, as we are now retired. I’m fretting over my living room, which currently has in it furniture from our former family room and the rug from a former bedroom, along with assorted tables and lamps from various rooms in a past life.

The rug in particular isn’t doing it for me, as the color is only marginally related and the pattern (IMO) too busy for the pattern on the slipcovered chairs. I’ve been thinking of maybe a blue and white striped rug, something Swedish-y in feel. The DH prefers thick rugs and most of the striped ones I’ve seen are flat weaves and dhurries. Maybe with a rug pad.

I’m including a photo of the adjacent dining room which currently sports a checked tablecloth in honor of our summer cookout last weekend and the upcoming July 4 festivities. I change the mood in there with different tablecloths, mostly keeping it not-too-formal. I go for pretty or country instead but not rustic or Americana.

Thanks for any ideas.

If you haven’t already, you might want to look through Annie Selke wool rugs. Lots of choices within that aesthetic.

YW! I think they have the fresh look you like, but maybe more plush.

I have to say, though, I love your current rug. Can you use it anywhere else? It’s so beautiful.

Might be able to use it in one of the bedrooms though I prefer not to have a rug that goes under the bed. I feel like they collect too much dust. DH likes carpet, I prefer bare floors. We currently have two smaller antique oriental rugs in the master br and reproductions in the others. I’ve never cared for the minty green of this rug. I was talked into it by a decorator 20 years ago and felt I had to use it after spending a fair amount on it.

Yes, the chair slipcovers are a blue floral and the sofa is a grayed blue with a bit of green in it. Wainscoting is blue gray.

Nine months later I’m still looking, lol. Plumbing problems and family life got in the way of getting this done. I’ve found a couple of rugs that I like but I’m not sure if they ”go”. One is a Dash and Albert wool flat weave that is fairly thick and a natural color (I love sisal/seagrass but DH hates it). I’m afraid it might be too casual or modern for my furnishings. Opinions welcome.

Another rug that I really like (green and gold are my favorites) would require reupholstering the furniture, but I’m tempted. I also like the rust color.

Any help might stop me lying awake at night thinking about this. TIA
