Best ceiling paint: SW Promar ceiling paint or Behr ceiling paint

last modified: 3 years ago

I want a nice bright white for the ceilings. SW said Eminance is out of stock for the foreseeable future and that was the brightest option being ”high reflective white”.

thoughts on Sherwin Williams Promar ceiling paint? its on sale right now like $30/gal

Behr ceiling paint?

or do I go with a flat wall paint like BM Chantilly lace?

we have vaulted ceilings so i really want them to be a nice white not dingy.

We’re doing pale oak for the walls undecided on the trim. I’ve seen white dove mentioned as a good trim color for pale oak but I don’t like how the white dove looks on the vaulted ceiling. We don’t have crown moulding so I don’t have to worry about a white directly next to the white ceiling.

Personally, I would not do white dove with pale oak. I know both colors are very popular and that a lot of people say they work well together, but to me white dove is a greige, has a bit of green/yellow undertone, white pale oak is a taupe, leaning toward pink or purple undertones.

My favorite neutral is taupe. I love taupe because it has a cleaner feel to it than greige.

When I see White Dove with Pale Oak the White Dove feels a bit dingy / too green yellow. I want something whiter/cleaner with my taupe wall colors.

The three BM colors I would test if I were you would be

Chantilly Lace, Oxford White and Simply White.

My absolute favorite white with most taupe colors is a color match I get from Benjamin Moore.

It is in their computer as Match of Devine Color™ V0101W Icing *

Oxford White is still a greige - not my favorite with Taupe, but it is whiter and less greige than White Dove - will feel cleaner

The other three I recommended are bright whites.

Chantilly Lace is grayer than Icing

Simply White is more yellow than Icing

Icing is a very light white with just a touch of peach undertone so it is softer, warmer than Chantilly Lace, not quite as stark, but not as yellow as Simply White.

I dont like any ceiling paints, I always buy a bright white flat wallpaint for ceilings. I do agree, if you are having white trim, you might want a flat paint version of the same color for your ceiling.

My husband and I painted our entire home interior with Behr Ultra Scuff Defense Paint and Primer in “off white”. The color looks great in all the rooms and at all times of the day. Matte for ceilings and walls, satin for doors and moldings. So easy to apply, no odor, no issues. It is fantastic paint!! Better than SW or BM paint!

@JenniferHogan it looks like simply white would go best with the cabinet color I am most likely going with and also looks nice with the pale oak. I’m not sure simply white is a good ceiling color though ive never heard anyone use that on a ceiling.

Sorry, it was late last night when I sent you the two links. I understand the hesitancy. Simply white is the right undertone, but may feel a bit too yellow, a bit too colorful when you are looking at samples vs looking at an entire wall. I also get that painting trim and ceilings is not inexpensive and something you don't want to make a mistake.

@Beth H. : is one of the pros who posts often on Houzz and I believe I remember some posts from her where she stated that she had used White Dove and re-painted with Simply White. I think she used it on her Trim, Walls and Ceilings, but maybe she will see this post and chime in.

There is not a color out there that works 100% of the time in every home.

There is a reason that I didn't pick a ready formulated white and used the color match to icing.

Although it is very slight, the difference between Simply White and Icing is that Simply White has a bit of gray added to the yellow, where Icing has orange. Both are very light whites, both give you a touch of warmth to soften the feeling, but I notice the slightest green tinge in Simply White that I don't see when I use Icing.

Simply White would be my first choice if I had to choose a white from one of the stock formula whites from BM or SW. I am not sure that anyone would see a difference if I would have chosen Simply White instead of Icing, but my OCD took over the decision making process.

Here are two photos of my foyer using BM Frosted Toffee (walls and ceiling) and Icing (door and trim).
