Beige (cream) overkill- Which one should I change?

Hi. I am updating some spaces in my home (paint, furnishings, décor) but all roads lead to the kitchen which have these big-ticket items that I had never considered changing. Since I suddenly woke up and realized I was drowning in beige, I need to do something to break this up and allow it to mesh better with greys and other pops of color.

The backsplash seems like the lowest-hanging fruit if I can find a good design bridge. If I can't achieve harmony with the backsplash alone, it has been suggested that replacing the counter is more affordable than the cabinets and could make a big impact. Part of me is wondering if I do all that, at the end of the day will the laminate cabinets will still feel too yellow? Refacing/replacing them is out of my budget, using the self-adhesive laminate may be beyond my level of patience (though I have seen some nice quality products) and I don't know if I will really like them painted, so where can I go with the other element(s) to tone this down?

The cabinet is: https://na.arauco.com/en/p/wf394-arctic-groovz-WF394

PS- please ignore all the random stuff, much of it will be gone.

The counter stools are going to be a modern style in a light grey leather.

I would start by changing all the bulbs to LED 4000K then at least you will see the true colors of all the items and I would make that cahnge all through the house since yellow hued lighting is not a good companion to grays at all. Take a close up of the counter once the new lighting is in on my monitor the backspalsh is not a good choice with the counter at all Please no DIT stick on laminate the bcabinets look quite nice and not at all beige on my monitor . Fix the lighting it will surprice you as to how different things will look. BTW the counter looks to be real stone so please do not replace with plastic quartz.

Why do you need things to mesh better with grays?

Gray has been trending for 15 years and is on the way out ... and being replaced with warmer colors.

What color are the cabinets? In one photo they look yellow and in the other gray. I would add more better/brighter recessed lights. A new backsplash would probably make a big difference.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting @chispa You are both right, the cabinets are not beige themselves but the combination feels very creamy/warm and combined they give me "beige" vibes. This is the finish of the cabinets https://na.arauco.com/en/p/wf394-arctic-groovz-WF394

I actually have tunable lights, I'll try to take a different pic but the bottom one that is close up is in natural light. The cabinets are warm in my opinion and most everything else isn't.

    Your backsplash is definitely warm.

@lindacottonwood right!!!...I've already ignored the backsplash in my mind lol. This wasn't the original backsplash and it doesn't go with anything. I would love to just be able to change that and bring out the subtle grey or blue in the cabinet so it feels less yellow.

I think that is a good idea.

Hold a piece of white copy paper next to the cabinets and take another picture.

Since you don't have a ton of backsplash, why not spice it up a little? A Pretty patterned tile?

I would also strongly urge you to paint - that color is doing nothing for the room.

    Good luck!

JW, yes, it is the backsplash that is jarring. It's not just the color but the scale and pattern and tonal aspect. My personal taste always tends toward simple/minimal and in this case I think that's what will pull this together. Try samples of smaller tile, perhaps square, and consider laying them stacked rather than running bond. A better color pic of the cabinets is needed, as they look cool whitish - far from the yellow tone in the link you posted. The stone is busy, so a solid would likely be my choice - perhaps crackle finish if solid is too plain.

Agree with Debbie's post above. Your current backsplash has a beige-y pink that's too warm in tone for the counter and the cabinets. Go in a cooler direction with light blues. I think I might do solid color tiles vs. a pattern, given the busy granite. How about blue hexes?

glass tile for yours. a blue would be nice....heres one..skip the insert I guess . its a small area you are dealing with..including a dark corner.. the sheen and simplicity of glass makes sense along with the contemporary feel generally. bring home samples and prop them up.

@Debbi Washburn it's SW Reserved White. It's an open LR-Kitchen with desirable natural light so I struggled with colors to find something that worked with the cabinets and everything else. It's all ends up being very blah with no focal point so I have been torn between simple solid backsplash to tie it together or something with some pops of color without feeling busy. I like your suggestions, sounds like everyone is telling me to lean toward smaller patterns!

IMO there is nothing wrong with the cabinets or counter. A new backsplash will be the change you need. Bring home some sample tiles in colors that are in your counter, or even subtle blues or greens. I'm sure you'll find something that works.

@TBL from CT I agree with you that simple might work. I didn't really consider smaller tiles being such a less obnoxious route. I'll try to get a better pic of the cabinets tonight but I can't un-see yellow/cream when I look at them.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors I think I need to try that. I'm doing teal in the adjacent room so I like the grey -blue. I need to play around with the smaller tiles.

@herbflavor I like it. The tiles are stacked like TBL from CT suggested.

I think because of how your kitchen layout is, you could do a cool paint color and fun backsplash. Here is my terrible attempt of trying to put together a mock up.

You can easily play with this idea. Just get some sample paint, put it on pieces of poster board. Finding a tile you like and printing multiple pictures of it then taping everything on the walls. You will find it is easier to visualize.

    Good luck!
