Revisit:ugly marble. What do you think of these wallpapers?

last modified: 2 years ago

I don't post over here much but I really need advice. We just bought a London flat in a period building and DH, who needs everything done last week, has made some impulse purchases that need help. (He's on his own over there and can't be reigned in). Most egregious are the chests he bought to use for bedside tables. The decoupage doesn't bother me but the marble tops...UGH!!!. Does anyone have any ideas for covering them? I'm going to look into whether they can be replaced, but if not, I need ideas. Will paint work? Fabric scarves? TIA!

“Looking at that sight [sic] a custom top is able to be ordered and swapped out.”

That doesn’t make sense. All of the ones at my link are vintage, what do you mean?

Did you all scroll down on Jinx's link? There is a pair in black for $5800.00.

I tell you, don't sent hubby out to buy a car. I see a Bentley in your future.

I like the marble tops! They are classic and appropriate to the style of this chest! Don’t like the decoupage however as it is far too busy! Paint the body high gloss black, find some large Rococo brass hardware ( gold leaf it!) and make these chests as special as they should be!

These are valuable. I’d sell them and find something different before ruining them.

@cheri127 I’m liking those chests more every time @Jilly finds them & shows us! They beg to have the room decorated around them. My opinon hasn’t changed - let them sit until you are in London & enjoying your excellent adventure! You have several good options: change lamps & partially cover top; move them to another location in home; sell them for what should be a good price or at least no loss. My guess is you’ve already come to that conclusion,

Lamps with a more formal look would only enhance these chests! I think your husband has a good eye!

Yeah, knowing what these are, I would be hesitant to touch them in any way even "reversibly". If you don't like them completely as they are (which is fine), sell them and find something you like better.

If you can sell these for what they are listing for then you should do that. As these stand now they would need to go into a much more eccentric and lavish environment; something a bit more bohemian! I think the decoupage is far too busy for your space and it’s a retro look. I love the shape of these chests and l myself would be stripping and repainting them! That would make them more formal though and probably not suited to your style either . Not knowing what your husband paid for these you may be able to resell them and recoup the cost and even make a bit on them!

The chests are here to stay. I think it will be easier and less expensive to change the bed and lamps. Plus he loves the them. Keep in mind the artwork and mirror are not ours and not staying and we will be changing the flooring and paint color. To give you an idea of the space, here are some photos from the real estate listing. We recently moved from an old Edwardian house into a 1980's HOA development (I know!). Our furniture was very traditional and didn't fit with the new space so we sent it over to London. As a result, the aesthetic will be very different from what you see in the photos.

Paint the chest and and top white….so easy couple cans spray paint in white lacquer would be gorgeous..gold hardware…beautiful gold lamp and you are done.

@elcieg Hahahaha. Seriously! We've been renting a place a block away and there are several luxury vehicles parked out front including a Rolls! Fortunately he has no interest in status autos! LOL!

😂Christian Lacroix is so avant- garden! Are you willing to make those work? Are you avant-garde? Because to make those look good they have to sit in a more is more setting! The busier the better! Not for the faint of heart!

OMG! I so agree with the velvet beddng! As I said, I know exactly what bed would work but he wasn't willing to wait for custom. However, the bed wasn't expensive and I can replace it next year. To give you an idea of what we sent over there, below is our living room in our previous house. Most of the furniture was shipped over there. We aren't "neutral'! LOL

I would like to thank everyone who has commented here. When DH sent me the photo, all I could see was the orange marble. However, after reading your comments, it's clear that it's the bed and lamps that make the chests not work (and the carpet but he didn't choose that. Haha). I will report back when I'm there at the end of September because we'll be choosing flooring, paint color and curtain fabric then. Thanks again.

People keep referring to them as decoupage, but are they? For that price, I would think they are hand painted. They are stunning and I’m so happy to read you will embrace them.

cheri127, your new home is beautiful and your furniture is wonderful! I was thinking what you posted in the original bedroom photo was your style and didn’t think there was any way those chests would work 🤦‍♀️. I’m glad you provided more information because what you have is certainly fabulous and a whole lot different!

Wow! You have great taste. That Bierdermeier chest is gorgeous! At least it looks like a Bierdermeier? Love everything. I am sure once you get there, you will enjoy that bedroom immensely. After living in Brussels Belguim and traveling to London, I can surely see this eclectic look charming everyone!

@Flo Mangan Good eye! We lived in Germany from 1990-1996. That chest is from the east after the wall came down. We were lucky enough to acquire several really special pieces while we were there.

It's not really technically decoupage (bits cut out and applied) or painted. It's Christian Lacroix Birds Sinfonia wallpaper from Designers Guild.

    It also comes in fabric.

Your right palimpsest; technically these could not be considered traditional decoupage as the individual elements are not cut out and applied; a much more tedious and involved process. Begs to question to online cost of these pieces except that the wallpapers themselves are rather pricey. Lots of furniture rehabbers using them though.

I think it's a matter of accumulating a number of similar Louis XV, XVI, and Neoclassical commodes in very good condition, no chips or flea bites to the tops, no veneer losses, all the ormolu present and so forth, then correcting any finish issues, then papering them, then marketing them and making a profit. The markup is probably a lot. But If they were manufacturing the entire chest from scratch it would probably cost quite a bit more.

Covering furniture with wallpaper seems to be very big in the UK right now. DH wanted to paper the bedroom but all of the paper I like is $300-400 a roll with large repeats. I found a few decent discounters so it's not out of the question. We'll be visiting the DG store in Chelsea when we go back in the fall. We already chose the living room drapery fabric. We'll probably do something similar in the bedroom. I just love DG floral linens.

I think it is as there are so many wonderful designs. Prices for these pieces vary considerably but that may be due to the fact that many may be actual antiques and others are antique reproductions . I tend to like love the larger mural size papers and am a huge fan of Timerous Beasties.

I think your husbands instinct to paper the bedroom is a good one. The chests will look at home in an environment that is a bit extravagant! This CL paper comes in a variety of colors . May not be to your liking but you may find something from another vendor that is similar that could work!

So I'm in London and the wallpaper samples have arrived. I'm leaning toward the plum, not only because it's gorgeous and doesn't fight the chests, but it makes the ugly marble blend. My second choice is the blue damask. We would do the damask on all of the walls but the floral on just the bed wall. What do you think?

    last modified: 2 years ago

Of these, I agree that the plum on the left seems to work the best with the table as a whole. However, you may have to go full-immersion and paper everything.

I don't generally agree that accent walls or paper on one wall tends to calm things down, I think it adds another finish to have two different wall coverings (paper and paint).

I think you may also need to paint the wall and baseboards (skirting) the plum color. Or a color from whatever paper you choose.

I feel like that headboard is going to now be the odd-man-out in this combination.

This is a very Not American esthetic, so I think a lot of people here may be against it.

Welcome back! Agree if you mean the long sample on left. Seems more complementary to bird pattern, headboard would show up more with higher color contrast & it seems less busy or more friendly with bird pattern - lets that chest shine. And, yes, agree it doesn’t fight with chest marble top - actually, I think the colors in that floral makes the top recede from attention - less dominant. Have to say that I don’t think those tops are ugly, just strong!

The two in the middle look like Designers Guild Surimono. Did you look at the purple colorway of that?

Here's a bigger representation of the DG Roseto Damson

    last modified: 2 years ago

I think the room can definitely handle having all of the walls wallpapered. One wall is builtin wardrobes and another has a huge window. I never even thought about the baseboard being painted. The wardrobe doors will need replacing and should probably be painted the same dark plum. The room is flooded with light so the dark colors won't make it feel like a cave (I wish we were reversed so that light entered the living room instead but...).

I didn't look at the purple colorway of surimono because I was so focused on blue. I only added the plum Roseto because I was struck by how pretty it was. I'll get a sample tomorrow if I can. I could have a lighter feel while still complimenting the chests.

I'm not too worried about the bed because it wasn't expensive. We could sell and replace.

If you must paper the room use wallpaper that goes well with those chests cuz they are the star of the room

    cheri127 thanked happyleg

Since I'm loving the way the deep plum looks, what if we painted the walls that color and did drapes with this fabric, with which I'm currently obsessed? I wish it came in wallpaper.

Love the direction you’re heading. I’m a big fan of most Designer Guild papers, fun seeing it be considered. Just sharing a few I’ve had saved and how well the large scale of the patterns work in these rooms (I’m not suggesting these specifically):

I also like your idea of painting, and bringing in these big patterns for fabric. You have a great sense of style and are headed to having a truly fabulous room.

ETA: Just playing with DG Indian Sunflower (that last one) in your room:

The Bloomsbury Rose fabric you like is gorgeous. Painting your walls and bringing this in would be beautiful.

Can’t wait to see what you decide! Love that you’re working around those wonderful chests.

@Jilly I love the murals but they aren't tall enough. The ceilings are 4m and the papers are 3m. What is the second paper you shared? I don't think I saw it and I love the large pattern.

The designer didn’t say. I had it saved on IG from a couple of years ago:

    https://instagram.com/elledesigns_louise?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

    I’ll keep looking.

Another room of hers. Great colors:

Meant to say, the Indian Sunflower isn’t a mural, it’s paper. But I think you’re wanting a softer look, and it’s a bit more graphic.

It’s gorgeous, but I’m not sure it’s a good fit with the chests. Colors can be so off on computer monitors, though, so it’s hard to tell. Different lighting in rooms, etc.

    It is striking.

Following! Such beautiful inspiration. Can’t wait to see how it turns out

I like that idea better than wallpaper

I am really surprised that the panels don't have a longer tail at the top. Most American panels come with an abundance of plain paper at the top of the design. I guess because of our recent penchant for super tall ceilings.

I"m noticing in pictures that most walls that are painted a deep color have the trim painted to match. If I painted the room, including the trim deep plum, what do I do about the door. The trim in the rest of the flat is white. Would a dark colored door with white trim look strange in the hall? Same question if I paper. As noted, the trim should be painted too if the paper is dark.

Which leads me to another question. Originally I thought because the room is so bright, it can handle deep colors but now I'm wondering if these dark colors would look better in a darker room...to create that cozy, moody look that I see in so many photos. I'm sorry if I'm overthinking this but this is an expensive project and I want to get it right. Thanks for all of your help so far.

You can paint just inside (bedroom side) of the door and the trim and jamb to the jamb stop in the darker color and keep the outside (hall side) white.
