You got it right, marble is very good with kitchen counters, for reasons of durability and keeping clean, but also looks very good, if you ask me. Granite also cuts it, on all of those points. Now as for the choice of the actual color, i think you probably have more choice in granite. There are some pretty good industrial grade granite too.

corian has some nice looks. granite if you can take the time can work. I dont think the door style is one to accompany marble. look around.

Can't see a lot of the cabinets but looks like there is a fair amount of movement/grain? - if this is true I would consider a quieter look for the counters

I agree with La La girl. As they say, only one boss in the kitchen and your cabinets looks kind of bossy from what we can see.

I would not describe any of your choices so far as calm. They're all very dramatic - and beautiful - but your cabinets are the star here. It may help to see more pics of your cabinetry.

Marble is porous stone, so you'll deal with staining and etching sooner rather than later. If you like the marble look but not the maintenance, consider marble-look quartz counters.

Plenty of folks do marble in their kitchens and are very happy with it. It's all about being aware of what you are getting into and the proper maintenance of whatever you happen to buy. You may want to look at quartzites - they have beautiful veining and can be a little harder than a marble.

As far as pattern... YES! IMO. When you view slabs, they are upright so you are really appreciating the design. In your kitchen they lay flat so it is not as busy as you think.

Definitely would use white on the parameter and you could go with a quartz 'marble look' on the island, but don't buy one that's busy with a lot of movement.
