Need help with our living room

last modified: 2 years ago

Hello!

I've been trying to figure out a layout/decor plan for our living room but it's just getting worse lol. Before I buy anything, I'm hoping people can help me!
We are going for an eclectic industrial look.
I think my biggest dilemma is the now-painted-concrete wall area. I can't seem to figure out what to do with that wall... I hate large walls!
+ the fireplace is not centered. We are planning to get a mantle eventually.
I would like to get some kind of cabinet situation for our board games potentially but not entirely necessary as we have space downstairs.

We will be removing the ugly yellow blinds and getting curtains. I was thinking dark grey, but open to suggestions. Also open to art suggestions.

I LOVE the reclining chair... it's super comfy... so it would be great if we could place it next to the couch to face the TV, even diagonally (the TV swivels).
I tried floating the seating ( to see if I could fit a cabinet) but it's too narrow of a space to have them float too much. But this looks weird and if I put a sideboard or whatever there, the chairs will basically cover it up and I feel it would look too crowded.

Here are my Pinterest pages for inspo:

https://www.pinterest.ca/samaanthag/home/living-room/

I really like our furniture right now (blue velvet chairs, dark browny grey couch, dark brown leather recliner, shag rug) but I'm open to other furniture maybe.

This was our living room when we bought the house/before we painted:

I'm open to repainting some other color.

Here's my little drawing of scale

And my little hands-on drawing thing where i was moving around furniture to try to figure out what would work but I'm still at a loss

I've seen some really good suggestions on these boards before so I'd love some help please :)

You could display an art piece or two on the concrete wall, if necessary hung from ceiling.

If you opt for drapes, I would recommend white or a light taupe color, hung at the ceiling.

May we have measurements of the room that include the measurements of the openings and the window? Also is this the only room that the TV can be in? You did a great job painting the room! Also another question; how many people use the room daily and how many guests do you want to accommodate?

Oh yes, what is the length of your couch?

Yes! Sorry, forgot to upload. I've edited my post.

Couch is 7.5 ft long, railing thing for stairs behind it is 9'10

Room is 17'2 by 11'5 from wall to wall, railing to front of fireplace is 9.75 ft

Openings are 3 ft 8 each average but the one near the "concrete" wall is a bit bigger than the one near the window.

Window is 6'9 with 2'4 of wall on either side of it.

    Fireplace is not centered.

We also have a TV/movie room downstairs. This room was going to be a sitting room, but I love being in it so we got a new TV lol. I would MAYBE consider not having a TV in here with the right suggestions :)

2 people use it daily and would like to accommodate 2 guests (his parents weekly)

Do you have a second blue chair as shown in your drawing? Also, since you have A TV room elsewhere can you recliner go in that room?

It is nice to have seating with the TV so close to the kitchen.

We also get that you really like the recliner in that room.

Those rich abstract paintings breathe so much personality into this mostly large wall space.

I do have a second blue chair. 1 is by the window and 1 is next to the recliner at the moment.

We have an even comfier recliner in the basement hahaha. Originally I did not plan to have a recliner in this room, but when I sat in it at our friend's place, I asked them if they were planning to get rid of it, so I traded our ladder shelf for this recliner as I couldn't make the ladder shelf work in this room either.

But I suppose I'd be open to putting it elsewhere if some other layout with other furniture were suggested in its place? The area near the "concrete" wall feels too big with only 1 chair in it, but too small if I try to fit in a console or something

    I feel your pain! 🙂

Here's a plan without TV. I'd love the two blue chairs and the art piece all on the gray concrete wall. Try that; just lean the art to see what you think. You do have an outlet there if you wanted to add an art lamp on that piece. Put a nice tall bookcase on the funky shaped wall between the doorway and balusters. That will provide a visual counter balance to the fireplace. Angle the recliner on the railing side with a floor lamp for a great reading spot. Put the sofa and coffee table in front of the window. Flank it with two new floor lamps (not torchiere style.) I don't think you need a mantel. Try another great piece of art about the width of the firebox opening. In front of the paneled wall right of the fireplace, add a slim credenza, table lamp and decor, which might include more art, a family photo, etc. The biggest change would be a new area rug, but arrange the seating first and then we can determine what the rug needs to be. I would want it to have gray and blue in it for sure.

TV is hung way too high, and you need a lighter rug with a larger pattern and some color to pull all those solids together. Some great advice above, it will turn out good!

Samantha, Something strange happened your pics and measurement graph disappeared. Did you pull them? Just wondering.

A rendition was built from your pics and measurements. This is a pictural rendition based on @decoenthusiaste 's suggestions. It is really awesome! (Not our work but her suggestions.) Or at least we think so. See what you think.

That was so weird!! I tried to edit my post on my phone instead of the computer and when I hit post, all of my pictures disappeared and my sentences all got lumped together lol.

    I've fixed it now.

Thank you for the suggestions! Those renderings are AWESOME!!! That's an interesting idea. I wonder if I could put the TV on the 'concrete' wall instead of the fireplace. I would still like to keep the TV in there because sometimes I want to watch my shows but my fiance wants to watch sports downstairs lol or action movies that I don't care about :P but I will definitely move furniture around to see if this new layout works! I'll post some pics maybe tonight!

I like the idea of the shelf on the weird-shaped wall if I end up moving the couch.

I agree that is strange. To be honest I don’t know why you can’t keep the TV where it is over the fireplace. But it wouldn’t hurt to move things around to see if it works better for you or what works best for you. Especially since you enjoy sitting in the lounge chair to watch TV. Glad the renderings helped. You would be able to try @decoenthusiaste suggestions with what you have now just to see if it works for you. I think her lay out is really a good one. Have fun! We all enjoy seeing pictures of what you’ve done when you finish.

Oh I just noticed that the TV remained over the fireplace in the rendition! I'm happy it was still incorporated in the design. Since it swivels, I'm hoping the TV can still be seen from the couch in th front of the window but I won't know until I try!

Oh and I forgot to mention that we put the TV that high up because of our plans to get a mantle. I just love mantles for decorations (particularly xmas). Maybe that's weird but yeah!

Thanks for illustrating and liking my idea, Mae Day! It looks great! Wish I had the resources and talent to get the things in my head on "paper" like that! I need to get serious about learning some new strategies for Houzzing! I used to do some Color Snap and Icovia Space Planner, but I don't care for them much anymore. I've been doodling with Roomstyler some but haven't perfected it well enough to offer my ideas here. You have to have a lot of info that OPs don't always provide to do that properly. Wonder about Sketch Up? Any suggestions?

Okay I gave the suggested layout a try... it did not work. Fiance laughed really hard when he was sitting in the single recliner directly in front of the TV, like a 70 year old single man alone in his basement HAHAHA

Having the couch by the window is lovely and I said that one day if we needed the extra seating, I would get a loveseat there... but having the couch by the window with the chairs on the other side of the room is a far distance if we want people over to chat. It just doesn't work.

Our sofa is too large to have in front of the window; it blocks the flow of entry into the room.

And also we have a vent there that can't be covered. I forgot to mention that part earlier.

We also could not really get the recliner in a good position... it needs to be pretty far forward in order to be able to recline without hitting the railing

Also very tight space here. If I push the chairs back to the wall, then there's a huge empty space in the middle of the living room.

I would love to hear some more suggestions on how we can make our living room look chicer.... new lamps would help I'm sure lol

    Hello Samantha,

Good for you. You tried it out to see if it works. And now we all know it does not. So let's see what else we can come up with. Question: what furniture do you really, really want to keep in this room? What can go? Are you still open to the downstairs as the TV room and this room as a gathering space? Are you alright with the recliner going downstairs? I know you will let us know so we can try something else for you.

So here we go and let's see what we can put together next.

What are the measurements of the chairs individually and side by side?

  • PRO

    Hello Samantha,

I guessed at the chairs being 30" wide. So went on that for the updated layout. Switching the chairs for the couch under the window would give you more room for your passageway through the living room.

Here are some pics with new suggestions. Yes, the recliner is not in the room and the TV is on the "concrete" wall. Some will say that the seating is too far away from the TV but hey this is just a suggestion anyway. Give it a shot and let us know.

    Hope this helps.

    @decoenthusiaste

I enjoy a LOT of your suggestions and ideas. I have fun putting people's ideas and suggestion into a virtual/pictural rendition. Whether it is ours or someone else's.

Lately I have seen folks post layouts that they put together on West Elm. The program that I/we use is one we have used for our clients for about 9 years. But I thought that Room Sketcher might be a good one. Don't know otherwise.

    Best Wishes,

    MAE

IMO I'd consider increasing the size of the wall adjacent to the staircase so that the TV could be mounted directly across from the FP.

I'd have the sofa placed in front of the concrete wall and have it facing matching chairs with a table between.

Good morning Samantha. This last layout is great if you’re using the room only for a seating room but not as good for the TV. We tried it out and the TVs just a little too far away. What do you think? Anyway, keeping the TV over the fireplace as you already have it, we are going to try another layout. You could try this one just to see if it works for you anyway. Have a good one.

    Hello Again Samantha,

It is good to know that the recliner is not a "wall recliner" but one that lays back. The wall recliners can sit against the wall without pushing on it. Also, since the two chairs are about 5' pushed together they will give you enough space to walk into the room from the kitchen, about 2'5". No that isn't a lot but in a small room like this it can work. I have the same amount of space between my furniture in my living room and we don't have any trouble getting in and out of the room to sit in the furniture. When you have guests over (parents) if need be you can pull the two chairs up closer for conversation.

So give this a try to see if it works.

Here's a picture of the next suggestion for your consideration.

Thank you so much, Mae! That's so funny because actually after I tried the last suggestion and it didn't work, we moved the couch back to the railing wall so we basically swapped the recliner with the couch so our current arrangement is exactly the same as what you have just shown us!

What I really appreciate from your design is to be able to visualize what else our room might be missing. You added a few side tables, a plant, etc and the shelf. I hadn't thought about getting a tall shelf. For some reason I could only think of a tv console style but a tall shelf makes way more sense for a small room.

In your most recent depiction, I see you added some curtains which makes the window wall look a lot nicer.

Re: measurement of the blue chairs, these are the chairs:

    https://www.costco.ca/miles-armchair.product.100663671.html

We would like to keep the TV where it is because we mounted it to the brick fireplace so if we were to take it off, we would have to somehow repair the brick. So if yall didn't think the TV could work there AT ALL then we would consider removing it, but the current layout isn't bad.

I think the overall design needs some specific furniture so I'm hoping y'all could give some suggestions on lamps, side tables, a shelf, etc to purchase? I haven't seen anything in person so online ordering is probably a better

    Hello Samantha,

I agree, leave the TV where it is. Taking it off would be such a hassle and at this point it really is the best place for it. Well that’s fun to find out that the last rendition matched what you did already. Sweet! I checked out the link for the chairs and saw that they are less than 32 inches wide so it seems as if they Do fit there against the “concrete” wall. As for the additional pieces , There are many online resources for getting those additional pieces. Home Depot is a great place for floor lamps. That is if you have one near you. Wayfair is a great online resource for furniture and they ship items for free. I am so happy that we could help in anyway. Best wishes to you and your fiancé. MAE

    Hello again Samantha,

To be honest you already have most of what you need. You could move the hanging plant to the opposite corner. You already have two floor lamps and a couple of side tables that would work just fine for you at least until you could find some thing that you really like to replace them with. Otherwise they would work just fine! The only thing to add would be the metal bookshelf. I suggest you check out Home Depot online they have some good ones but again there are a lot of nice resources for shopping online. There is also IKEA.

  • PRO

Oh PS. Some wall sconces for the concrete wall would be a nice addition. The ones in the rendition hold candles and are a metal grail.

@Mae Day Organizing and Interior Design now that we've had some time in the living room, our current layout actually looks a lot like the most recent mockup!! Thank you!

But now I'm having issues with this corner. I think a plant and a lamp would be too crowded but we could really use lighting..

We added a fish tank on the right side

and here's what's going on on the right wall:

the shelf on the right feels too small or something but i quite like it..

any suggestions? in your mockup, the chairs were farther to the right but they're fairly large and blocked entry to the room. we also like having side tables next to chairs and next to the couch for plants and to set drinks if 3 people are sitting on the couch instedad of leaning forward for the coffee table

do y'all have any product recommendations and suggestios for that dang corner? maybe a tall shelf?
