Love those chairs … what is your budget? Will you be putting a rug in the living room?

I think I’d wait until you get your living room rug. That will be more of a focal rug — a patterned one would look great — and then you can decide one to accent it in the dining area.

Otherwise, I’d look for a solid or very slighty patterned rug with gray tones. Just using this one below as an example (it’s from Crate & Barrel and over budget). Have you looked on the Rugs USA site? Good prices and they have a mock-up feature like I did here. Keep in mind, though, that mock-ups don’t always get the color/lighting exact.

I’ve had good luck with Overstock rugs, too.

Locally, you might check out Lowe’s, Target, Home Goods, etc … they usually have decent selections.

The scale of those chairs is so big I would consider a larger round table for the space.

The proportions look strange to me.

I'd skip the rug in the DR and just put one in the LR.

Or with some abstract rug with existing colors (no pattern).

Had originally intended to get smaller upholstered chairs, but i found these ones second hand for very cheap, so wanted to try them out and play with them in the space. The table is currently 42“. We could maybe fit up to 48” in that space but not much more.

Once you get placemats and dishes on the table there is no room for anything else. I'd check the room dimensions to see if you can go to 54" for the table.

Here's how that might appear. It only adds 6" around the perimeter of the table.

I would only add an are rug to the living room area. No need for an area rug in the dining area. Add a centerpiece with Color or a bowl, a plant in the corner.

Accessories will bring it together.

Carpet where you eat is counter indicated. Get one for the living area and call it good!!

I’d use the table a couple of times with four people (if you haven't already) and see how functional the table is. If changing, consider a rectangle which I think will also feel better in the space.

So...I’d hold off purchasing the rug and when picking, coordinate with living room. Suggest simple in DR so as not to compete/let chairs’ fabric be appreciated and in LR a suble shade and pattern is suggested. Your space is light and airy, so I would lean in that direction.

Since your chairs are so highly patterned I might suggest a plain rug without pattern so they don't compete with each other.

Agree the living room rug comes first. @everdebz offered a good, neutral option with the third blue one, depending on what happens in the living room.

I agree your table will feel too small very quickly and a rectangle or square would probably look better with those chairs. They do look comfortable!

'New' printed rugs that look faded/distressed, and in a idk Mediterranean pattern would go well with the chairs. I think they're beautiful btw, and not last century. Maybe they had large medallion like yours, but it's wow imo.
