I have transplanted the seedling so that a half inch of root is showing. This prevent dam-off from killing it while it is still tender.

 With sterile soil that can be planted a little deeper  because that fungus mold is not there

  That means It won't be tested  for  strength against dam- off dease  and won't have the resistance against it

10 years ago I planted about 400 Meiwa kumquat seeds to develop a damp-off resistant kumquat trees. Every seed died of Damp-off. Kumquats are very slow to start and don't make it through the damp-off susceptibility moths before they developed the hardened bark. A meiwa seedling take5 times longer to reach 12inches than a lemon tree.
