Shopping for Fall Clothes, Organizing

last modified: 3 years ago

BBstx thread to find a top for her skiirt led me to try on fall clothes to see what fits, what is too old, or dated, and what I actually need to plug holes in my fall wardrobe. Aside from being delighted to fit into everything (a happy surprise!) I realized I have lots of multiples of staples. None was so evident than hoisery :( I updated my trouser sock supply before going through what I had and putting them away was good reason to organize. Minus many pairs of outworn sociks and tights, this is what I have now

I used shoe boxes from shoes going to Goodwill to corral them Marie Kondo style.

So far in addition to five pairs of sociks I clearly did not need I have bought a cotton knit jacket, a charcoal cashmere sweater with 3/4 sleeves and a pair of dark green suede driving shoes. (Since my Achilles tendon injury I actually find these easier to drive in and keep a pair in the car.)

What have you bought for fall, or are you thinking of it yet? Any organizing to share? I recently watched a youtube called “You’re Doing Home Organizing Wrong” that had some good tips. she exhorted people to use shoe boxes instead of buying containers, and I took the advice with good results.

Very pretty style and color, Funky!

Thanks, Kswl-- I think it is a style that works pretty universally but definitely works for me!

Has anyone received the JCrew ribbed pink cashmere sweater posted above yet? It says the length is 22" which is way too short for me.. but before I order my second choice, I wanted to hear how it worked for others.

i haven’t received my pink BR sweater but I id receive the green ribbed cashmere cardigan from Garnet Hill. It’s lovely and soft and matches my new shoes. IRL both greens are mossy and deeper in color.

It runs large though so I am exchanging it for a smaller size..

beautiful match! And what a great color for fall!

My Banana Republic sweater arrived today and I was so disappointed it wasn’t the pretty pink advertised! It doesn’t even have a tinge of pink. It’s not a bad color, but my taste in brown runs to camel and chocolate brown so I don’t actually have anytjing to wear this sweater with. It’s also HUGE and the pocket hits my chest at an oddly uncomfortable height so it’s going back.

A new pair of Rothys driving shoes in latte also arrived today to replace an older pair of suede shoes. These are very confortable and I’m excited they’re washable! DD rarely wears any other kind of shoe and has been advising me to try them. Glad I ordered these.

i found a cute light gray wide wale ribbed sweater dress IN MY CLOSET, never worn! and I’m looking for a cute belt in brown suede or of some unusual fsbrication. The dress fits well and is plain. I’ll wear a very thin medium brown cashmere pashmina, gray or brown tights and brown tweed ballet flats and I’d like to try belting the pashmina— although I would probably wear it simply flun g over and around and belt the dress underneath it. This ensemble is meant for fall as it would be too bulky to go under a coat.

Received this dress the other day and love it!

I received the lavender surplice jersey top but it is too big. I really haven't sized down much in tops since I lost weight-- but in this top I need to. Unfortunately, it's sold out at Macys so I will need to just return it instead of exchanging.

Also got this top which is more transitional than fall but I do like it quite a bit

and LOVE this top and it fits well -- but I would prefer it to fit a bit more loosely. Gotta focus on exercise this month!

Thsts a cute print Sue! it would look cute with a sweater or jacket and boots if that’s still the plan.

Sue, I just ordered its sister

Sue and Bunny, that dress is on my list too, but there are too many nice patterns, so I keep not buying it. I am going to regret that once I go to order and it's gone.

I love this Garnet Hill dress and like the gold color for fall. I would wear it with an oatmeal colored sweater and possibly a scarf tucked in along the neckline. Scarves seem a bit superfluous these days but I have some nice Hermes and RL ones that would look great with that dress with brown tights and flats (and a tweed purse I bought at a fair!). From the fabric description it sounds like a great dress for travel.

Bunny, I just went back and ordered that too! I need fall casual dresses. I think they could be dressed up or dressed down.

Zalco, hurry! Extra sale this weekend. The dress ends up being about $50.

Sue, haha. I don't normally willingly pay for shipping but the reductions on this dress made it more palatable.

Sueb, oh wow, making myself choose a pattern. Thank you for the heads up.

My dress arrived and I'm not happy with it. The color is "night floral" and online the background looks black to me. Or so I'd hoped. Nope. The background is brown, a color I avoid like the plague. Black, darkest blue, those evoke night. Not brown. So I'm sending it back. But, lucky me, I get to pay a total of $17.90 to have no dress (shipping to me and postage to send it back). I bit the bullet for shipping to me, since the dress was much reduced in price. But now, not having anything and being out of pocket means no more Garnet Hill for me. Phooey. At least with Amazon if I don't like it, no harm, no foul.

    Kswl thanked Bunny

@Bunny I would be tempted to call them and say what you posted. You had no intent of returning, picture doesn't represent the actual dress and ask for return postage to be covered. Or postage both ways!

    Kswl thanked RNmomof2 zone 5

RNmomof2, I'm tempted to do that. I sent them an email and wrote on my return slip comment section. The fit wasn't great (a voluminous XS) but I'd probably have kept it if the dress wasn't brown. Why would someone order clothes online when a miss still means you pay? Garnet Hill should take a page from Nike's book.

    Kswl thanked Bunny

I sent them a long email. We'll see.

    Kswl thanked Bunny

I agree with you Bunny. This is the risk *they* take when calling it "night floral" and not using the word "brown" anywhere.

I would send them a series of quotes about the night sky, like

Gee, its pitch brown out tonight!

    or

Whatever it is it'll keep till the morning, Midnight Brown.

I ordered this EF organic cotton boucle sweater during the labor day sale-- I really like it. It's a great weight for the transition to fall/winter. Love cotton sweaters .. and i love the color which is a little more interesting than pale pink (which I also love).

It's a boxy fit.. but it hangs nicely and I still have a "shape" in it.

    Kswl thanked Funkyart

Love that sweater, Funky! It looks like it also has a dark thread running through it which is such a great look. I like boxy sweaters. They can be very flattering, it all depends on where the bottom of the garment hangs. It it hits just the right spot they can actually be slimming.

Yes, I thought it was slimming for sure. There are no dark threads but the boucle texture does add some depth to the color.

When I went back to snag the photo, i decided that I loved the pants they paired with it in the video. I just ordered these boiled wool jersey pleated lantern pants. It's a style i used to love in the 80s when I had a tiny waist. It's perhaps a stretch for me -- I am prepared for them not to work but both the fabric and style intrigue me.

Love the finishing on the pocket.

    Kswl thanked Funkyart

They’re a lovely neutral color and the shape is good. That style has to hang perfectly and the proportions have to be just right not to veer off into harem territory. Eileen Ffisher usually gets it right. Please report on the slacks when you receive them.

I agree on the need for a perfect fit... but I screwed up-- I was distracted while checking out and didn't attempt to complete the order until this morning. They are sold out in my size this am. I was a little bummed-- but changes were good they weren't going to work out for me.

Bunny, that is one reason i don’t order from GH much anymore. Their return shipping stinks. I am so picky about what I order, and half the time things don’t fit correctly anymore. Now it seems colors aren’t representd correctly either. I would much rather take my chances with retailer who had free return shipping or has a local store where I can return the item.

    Kswl thanked OutsidePlaying

I also very rarely order from GH because of their shipping policies. I'd be less inclined to be mad about it if they were small and privately held but the same company owns QVC, HSN, Ballard, Frontgate, etc.

The shipping policy makes me feel taken advantage of. It's as if they feel the demographic is already purchasing things that cost above average so GH is counting on the demographic to not balk because of their absurd shipping policies.

"Guys, the fancy ladies love our things so much that when they check out, they won't care about the extra $15 and will ignore the return shipping policy. Muhahaha!"

And IIRC, they won't even give you a bulk rate label for return shipping which is also very annoying.

Stepping off my GH soapbox now :)

I await a response from GH. I'll keep you posted on that front.

Too bad about GH. I have two of their quilts and a few comforters.

Both the quilts are exactly as pictured.

I agree with all of the above re: GH.. but I do still buy bedding from them. I like their flannel.

    Kswl thanked Funkyart

I too buy their bedding. I was very pleased with the two flannel duvet sets I ordered. I tend not to order clothing now because of their shipping policies.

So the bone EF baggy pants did come back into stock last week so I ordered them. They should arrive today or tomorrow. They are still iffy but i love the throwback to 1980s Limited style pants.

I also picked up a pair of boots-- wasn't planned but I took my niece to get a new pair of sneakers and these were on a super clearance. I think they look much nicer on my foot.. in fact everyone in the store commented on how cute they looked with my skinny jeans.

I was thrilled to find a wedge (low as it is) that work with my vision issues/vertigo and i love the green. $200 reduced to $120 and then I had a VIP coupon for 50% off clearance. Out the door for $60.

and my latest purchase.. i fell in love with this scarf. I don't normally like or wear any variation of red but I really like the unexpected gold, lavender and hot pink.

    Kswl thanked Funkyart

Wow, Funky—-that’s a fantastic deal on the shoes, it’s nice to get good basics at such a great savings. The colors in the scarf are very pretty in combination.

I finally received the green jacket from GH. It’s hanging out in my closet where i can see and try it on daily because I still haven’t made up my mind if I am going to keep it. For some reason on me it looks like an Eddie Bauer version of the Chairman Mao jacket from the 1950s.

Kswl, that sadly sound like a return. Never works if you have to yourself into it.

    Kswl thanked eld6161

Yes, I was pretty pleased with the boots-- I wasn't even going to try them on (as the shopping was focused on niece). Glad I gave in! Shoes are so hard for me to find. I think I just need to pick them up when I find something that works.

The EF pants arrived-- I love the jersey wool fabric. I'd never heard of it but it is very comfortable and will be very warm. I also like the bone color-- it is perfect for a cool weather neutral. Unfortunately they were too big and even still, they emphasized my tummy too much so they will go back. I WILL give them a try again once I have lost more weight-- and while I loved the color, I will likely go for one of the new colors just released (woodland is a lovely dark green)... and maybe the straight leg instead of the lantern pant. They are very well made and I would definitely recommend them (and the straight leg version).

KSWL .. I laughed aloud at your description of the GH jacket. I am sure you can find a more flattering version of that style. Proportions are everything-- and a little shape at the waist wouldn't hurt either.

Funky love your new wedge boots and on sale at that. I was able to find the Vionic boots with tassel that you previously posted. They fit me perfectly and don’t look like ”clown shoes” on my size 10 feet.

I got my GH cardigan as requested for my bday and I looove it.

I also got the Bloomingdales earrings I had posted about on one of my MOG dress threads. I’ll be returning them. Smaller and less blue IRL, plus one of the clasp thingies is not operating quite right. Oh well. Now I’ll have a ”credit” with the Bank Of DH.

I can’t find the pic of the earrings now but here’s the matching necklace. The blue color IRL is barely blue at all.

The sweater is great, Sue. I imagine myself wearing mine a LOT, especially since I often wear brown and khaki slacks. (I finally have a pair of jeans but rarely wear them.)

@Irish2 so glad they worked out for you! I love them too-- i have no issues wearing them all day long.

@Sueb20 love the sweater! Such a great color and length! Sorry the earrings didn't work out but I am sure you will find ones you love! And... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I wore one of the two Banana Republic sweaters I ordered (similar to the ones @OutsidePlaying posted) for the first time last night and loved it. I hate heavy sweaters and this weight was perfect and felt cozy.

Ugh! I ”lost” several sweaters a few years ago. I finally figured out that I must have thought one of my ”winter clothes” boxes was a ”goodwill” box. So I basically donated some of my favorite sweaters (including cashmere, Eileen Fisher, etc) to goodwill.

At the other extreme, I just FOUND two nice sweaters that had been hidden in a bag that was supposed to go to the dry cleaner back in March 2020. Instead they sat on the floor of DH’s closet until a week ago.
