Where to find replacement glass for door 107 year old sidelight glass

Contractors removing old paint from my front door cracked 3 of the beveled sidelights glass. They measure about 6.25 X 13 5/8 inches inches. Glass companies are saying they now have to use tempered or laminated glass by law.

Is there any salvage place that might have this glass?

Tempered would not change the appearance at all honestly.

Tempered glass can be beveled. If you're being told something else, it's not true.

It's not the bevel but the fact that old glass like that is wavy. Tempered glass is not.

I was thinking "Wavy" (old time float glass was naturally distorted a bit) as well but nothing in that picture leads me to glass that is over 100 years old at all.

My windows are 100 years old. Most are not wavy. Yes, here and there, you can see it, but it's not so apparent that you'd notice the difference. We have 2 replacement windows, one in the original frame, so I never noticed. It was pointed out that the glass was much lighter, so when they put the window back with the same window weights, it flies up.

That said, you should just contact salvage places. You could try Bagala Window Works | Window & Door Restoration | Westbrook, ME for some advice, too.

Tempered glass can be wavy or beveled--it just costs more. (We just replaced some windows and had to decide about that!) But if you have a local salvage yard, you could try there too. The tricky part is that because of the bevel, you'll need glass that's exactly the right size for your openings, which might be challenging to find.

There are a couple of companies that make new "old" glass, Bendheim is one. Yes, you can find old glass at salvage places, some even cut to order.

Wavy glass is easy to find. In the perfect size good luck. Best place to get lucky would be salvage places near you. If you call them they may have a better idea of your chances. But as mentioned, with enough money you can get anything done, and this can be done quickly.

You can buy brand new restoration wavy glass in any size you wish to order. Visit a local glass shop.

I'm sorry to hear about the damage to your beveled sidelights glass. It can be frustrating when accidents like this happen during home improvement projects. As for finding replacement glass, it's worth exploring salvage places in your area. These places often have a variety of architectural salvage items, including vintage glass pieces. You can try contacting local salvage yards, antique shops, or even online platforms that specialize in architectural salvage. Make sure to provide them with the specific measurements you mentioned (approximately 6.25 x 13 5/8 inches) to increase your chances of finding a suitable match. Good luck in your search!
