I wanna know if what wall tile color/design you will use for your shower area. Also the shower floor? Will you be replacing it as well or if not can you send us some picture? Remember you will have a glass shower and the inside will also be visible and we need a full context so we could give you a better suggestion for everything.

Will you be replacing your vanity top too?

Nonetheless, there are lots of both contemporary and modern bathroom Ideas here I think you'll love. You can check them out.

If you want modern, then you need to change out the very traditional doors to something modern or transitional. Even a slab door would work.

Smooth the ceiling. You'll be amazed at how much that improves the look and makes the ceiling feel higher.

If you do only those two things and change out the flooring, you probably wouldn't have to do the shower area. Personally I think that area looks fine.

Were you going to replace the vanity top? The current top locks you into warm colors. You have a question mark next to flooring. Do you intend to replace the flooring or not? We can't see what color the tile is inside the shower. What colors were you thinking of using? Are you DIYers, or were you planning on engaging a contractor? Do you have a budget in mind? That will dictate how many things you can change.

There are dozens if not hundreds of different ways you can do this bathroom. When you say you want a modern look we don't really know what that means to you. You could just be referring to changing the beige color scheme. Because the lighting isn't great I am not even sure what style the vanity is. I also don't know what style the rest of the house is. If you change this bathroom such that it doesn't fit with the rest of the house I don't know if you're doing yourself any favors. While tozmo1 says you should change the door style, if you do that you should really do it throughout the house which is opening quite a can of worms.

If you haven't already, take some time to look at pictures on Houzz and build an Ideabook that contains pictures you like. This will help you to identify what you like and convey to others what you're hoping to do. Then add some inspiration pictures to your post.

Very helpful. Changing the doors never crossed my mind. Will do the ceiling and try and decide on a color for the vanity.

Bedroom is a light gray with a dark blue contrast wall and white crown molding. Sheer curtain and thick black rods
    Dark gray laminate wood floors.
I like the idea of removing the towel racks.

Shower space by glass is an excellent idea.

Frameless glass structure is the perfect design I love, not only because

frameless glass structure could make the whole design to be modern,

but also the lighting fixtures could work very well with it.

By the way, just noticed you wanted brushed gold faucet?

So you will use whole brushed shower fixtures to match it?

And the lighting fixtures to be by brushed gold finishing too?

Take our products for example ( I just prefer posts text to be with pictures )

The wall supply elbow is the same finishing as the shower arm and shower head,

but I took the photo of it to be disaster.

How important the lighting fixtures are!

I disagree with @kandrewspa about changing out all the doors. Is that the ideal, well yes but most of us don't have the budget to do our ideal, so I approach projects like a door change incrementally. Few people will come into your bedroom and en suite so likely only you and your family will see the doors in comparison to the rest of the house. Over time, you can change out the other doors.

All the best to you on this project. Let us know the outcome.

I have to agree on bang for your buck changing out doors. Doors consistent through out a home is a thing. Ya don't change JUST a bathroom door or two in this case. What hit me was the mirror. "the old ones are 2 large wood framed mirrors mathiching the vanity" is not what I see. You have the typical 70s vanity to ceiling. Framed would be more modern. Painting or re-staining is not modern/traditional it's owner preference. Both are popular. I caution on color--if you go say navy blue that's very taste specific and is most likely to wear thin for you and others fastest. What's your color scheme? You are taking out the baseboards....for why? The one place I have always seen flat ceilings is in a bathroom. It's as old as time. It's curious yours is not. Your vanity design seems on trend but the oval sinks not so much. That counter is very bossy is that what you want? It's maybe 50/50 on the double sinks. I would go to one and give yourself some room . You are going to ALL glass on the shower? There are already glass doors. So no privacy what's so ever--which makes it a one at a time use room. Not seeing the bang for your buck used there. For reasons mentioned above--no one but YOU will ever know!!! We need inspriation pics to get an idea of what you think "contemporary or modern look" is.

Whole house has that textured ceiling. Hate it!

"You have the typical 70s vanity"

Home was built in 1994. The Vanity is granite top purchased about 10years ago.

Baseboards being changed out due to damage which can't be seen well in the pics.

The goal for now is to do a refresh to hold us over a couple of years until were ready for the full reno. So no real budget. Just looking to freshen up with paint and fixtures. However while behind the vanity I'm upgrading my valves. Installed the gold faucets and hate them. So yeah, I dont know what I want. Finally found a few pics, here and here that will guide me and perhaps help those of you here that have been patient and helpful. The simple color scheme grabbed me. Black trim, white walls and balck accessories and the accent is the wood. I'll be using Oil rubbed and going with a dark floor. So the items I purchase for this "hold over" will be used later.

    Thanks to all again.

The current floor tile is dated and needs to be replaced. The vanity cabinets isn't bad looking and is pretty classic in design. I like the dark color but to brighten you bathroom I might suggest painting. The countertop looks a bit dated also. So, replacing it should help according to what you choose. A big yes to the glass shower!

IMO the shower does not need privacy in a ensuite pretty sure you have seen eachother naked before. IMO since this is not a redo but just a freshen up I would do the ceiliignsince it is avery messy job and paint the walls and save for the right time to do the whole thing . I never like doing band-aid fixes for spaces all it does is waste money

Getting there. I Love our new water fall faucets (almost as much as our cat does). Painted, re-did the eletrical and got the lights and mirros up. Deciding between hooks and rings for the hand towels.

found a sander that I can rent to make fast work of flattening the ceiling. Will tackle that later in the week.

Staining the all the nicks in the vanity today.

I don't know if it was mentioned and it may be too late since this project moved quickly but one big way to update this bathroom would be to cover the mop/stomp ceiling with a smooth ceiling.

@palimpsest David indicated above that he is on it!

@David Spriggs you can also consider a hand towel bar. Here for example https://www.houzz.com/products/moen-triva-9-hand-towel-bar-matte-black-bp1886bl-prvw-vr~160585704

Love that the cat approves of the updates!

yeah, my cat thinks he's my assistant. Sits and talks to me during every project. Even climbs up on the car if I'm turning a wrench. However, during this project we had an issue and he drew blood.

LOL! that is hysterical. Put a backpack on that cat and put him to work. Fill it with tools and when you need something, he can bring it to you. I love cats like that!

consider a hand towel bar. Here for example https://www.houzz.com/products/moen-triva-9-hand-towel-bar-matte-black-bp1886bl-prvw-vr~160585704 "

I like the large squared mounting pieces but Id rather have one side open ended.

    like this one.

Would brass or gold knobs work on the vanity? The faucet is oil rubbed but the lights have gold accents. problem is oil rub will blend in with the wood and I want them to pop a little.

I like both towel bars. Can you get them in oil rubbed? I think gold or brass knobs would look good with the lights. Pulls it all together. Does Kitty approve? 😸
