Help choosing wall color/vanity to match tricky tile floor

We have a tiny windowless 2-piece bathroom. Long story short, the 50 year old toilet leaked and the sink cracked, so we decided to remodel. The existing floor is a beautiful Italian tile in beige and terracotta. My husband would like a “dark and moody” vibe. We are struggling to choose a wall color and vanity. Should we put dark terracotta paint on the wall or is that too overwhelming? Beige seems too boring and not at all dark and moody. It is also hard to find a vanity that is “teak” color rather than “walnut” brown. Would a walnut brown vanity look off? Thanks for any suggestions!

I wouldn't go moody with those colors. Keep the tile (which is beautiful, IMO) and paint the walls white. I do like the oak for the vanity. It will look lovely!

In keeping with the tile, you might want to try a more creative direction for the room. See images below. At the very least I would not apply simple paint to the walls. I would consider a limewashed wall or even apply a tile that looks like wood or stone.

Consider a more primitive-style sink & more minimal vanity design.

Personally I like what you have selected to create a dark and moody vibe. Remember it’s just paint and if you don’t like it then it’s a simple fix. Good luck!

I like the idea of the dark walls with that floor tile for dark and moody.

But if you are not careful the vanity is going to look too light in teak or walnut.

I think the vanity probably needs to be painted either the lighter color of the tile or maybe slightly darker than the wall color but closely coordinated with it.

    Hello Edamame-

I think a Roman Clay Finish in a neutral color matched to the background of your gorgeous tile will create movement and interest which is more moody than flat paint. That tile is really the star and you would overpower it with a similar wall color. I think matte black or a dark bronze finish will really highlight the outlines in the tile and add a more masculine touch to include your husband's hope for a moodier look. Remind him that a windowless bathroom is by nature dark! Here are some images from Portola's website in line with what I envision and has tile as the wow factor!

White walls all the way..let that tIle get all the attention!

How about wall color the same as the dark brown that outlines the leaves? Then the reddish brown will function more like an accent color and draw the eyes.

A white vanity with the dark terra cotta walls would showcase that beautiful tile. A white (or off white) vanity would brighten the space.

Wow, so many great ideas, thank you all. Sounds like the majority favor light walls, wood vanity and dark accents. Is it ok to do a black faucet and vanity light even if nothing else is black? Or should I also get a black framed mirror if I go black? It’s great to get such a terrific variety of options. I did consider green for the wall, to match the leaf outlines, but it is a bit of a muddy green, rather than fresh green.

Black, or dark bronze, is absolutely ok with it! And yes, a like mirror would be nice.

It depends on mirror too - if you like it quite well maybe wall paint like Pale Oak, whatever blends with the tile.

In a room without windows, the lack of light will make all colors look more grey/muted. So the grey green will transform to more of a grey, which is hard to see on a screen.

Powder rooms and small bathrooms are the place to go crazy with design. So, think about bold wallpapers, startling paint colors, awesome textures, dramatic lighting and intricate and/or bold patterns! Good luck!

Some inspiration…I would add gold, copper or chrome fixtures…keep the walls light…Pale oak is a beautiful very light neutral..would be nice for the walls..go with a light oak or driftwood oak leaning gray for vanity.

I love these inspiration boards, LS Design Studio, Everdebz and Lau Rie. The ideas and colors feel very calm and natural. I think my husband may be willing to trade dark and moody for natural and inspired. Time to get shopping!

Everdebz, there will be a light above the 24” vanity. The ceiling is really low (at most 6.5-7 ft as this is a basement bathroom with ducts hidden above ceiling). So the mirror can be no more than 24” square. That leaves about 5-6” for the light. I’m not sure what kind of light would work in this teeny room other than a linear wall sconce on its side!

I agree with white walls. The room is small and windowless so white will look great. Let the tile be the star

    Backlit mirror?

I did consider green for the wall, to match the leaf outlines, but it is a bit of a muddy green, rather than fresh green.

It will read dark and work well with what you have. Get a sample and try it.

I find most people are afraid of something outside the box and go for the usual white, gray, tan, etc.

I agree with white walls. The room is small and windowless so white will look great.

White will take on a gray cast in a room with no natural light.

    Do. The. Green,

The other colors will take AWAY from the tile. The green will allow the rust in the tile to stand out.

I also like the rustic look for the sink, and the wood console / vanity will contrast much better with the green than the rust (or the white).

And - finally the round backlit mirror would be an unexpected treat.

If you paint walls white just be sure you use the right temp in lighting to make it a true white

Don't paint the walls white. It will look dingy, not bright.

Wow, I agree the backlit mirror is a treat. Well…I’m out of town this week and so husband went ahead and painted it white. He wants this project done! At least he didn’t paint it terracotta, which you have all wisely steered me away from. I’ll see it soon. If it doesn’t look good, green will be next!

Linear wall sconces with a interesting mirror…..being it is only going to be 24” in size…can’t wait to see it! White will be beautiful.

Well, a few weeks later and minus the original fisherman wallpaper, it’s done! Or as done as we know how to do it. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful ideas! This is our first DIY renovation (and it’s in the basement) so we stuck to what we knew how to do. If we were more skilled, we would have thought to move the electrical outlet (ugh), and linear wall sconces would have been so nice (too complex)! I like it but it’s missing something, looks a bit plain. Any ideas?

Maybe consider adding larger wall art (to replace the existing) in tones above which would nicely compliment your new space.

The paint color swatches you picked out are great options for a dark and moody vibe. I bet it will look great!

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll look for some wall art first and see if that helps.

I think it would be good to add more contrast and freshness back in at this point. I would paint the baseboards white. Add in some fun towels, a little stool with greenery, LARGE ART in black and white.

If your budget allows I would go with an oversized artwork on the wall opposite the door. Your tile is so pretty, btw.

Careful with scale of the artwork, a larger size or overall dimension would look great!! Avoid busy patterns or subject, it will most likely compete with the pattern on the floor.

I feel like something tonal (either contrasting or a bold complimentary tone) maybe with some texture would look amazing.

Now that you have all pointed it out, I can totally see why the art needs to be much bigger and the room less monochrome. Thanks so much!!
