For those who like modern mid Century, which one should I choose?

I already have the bed and two dressers, but I am torn with if I should go more light and airy or more dramatic, what is your vote mood board 1 or 2?

Beautiful home! No, I don’t think your rooms look cluttered at all. You’ve done a great job with everything.

I like the second look best.

I am now leaning towards 2 only because I had the room neutral before this. Here are some pics of my old room in 3d, I never did take any real pics before I sold everything. There will not be anymore items then what is in this old room. It will be pretty equal.

I am not keeping the bedroom walls gray anymore though. I do love the green bedding in option 2, but also was not sold on the rug. I love that is has colors that pull out the other colors though, but it is too muddy huh? I will search for a new option.

I think they both look nice (definitely not muddy or awful or dreary, jeez, Jan). The first one reads more Boho to me and is more in line with recent trends. The second one very much evokes for me the nature colors of MCM in the late 60s and 70s, when olive green and rust and brown were everywhere. I was a kid in the 70s, and may possibly have a bit of baggage from my mom's decorating, so if it were my room I'd probably choose the first look. But you're not me, and the 2nd design looks great even if it's not for me.

I’ll let the pros give their opinions on specific pieces, but I like #1 best. Personally I’d remove a few pieces, but the feeling is nice.

I can see why you want to add color to the bedroom. In the rest of your home, there isn't much green. Are you making a departure with #2? Will you add green to other rooms if you choose #2? Not that it's necessary. I'm just curious because I am adding blue to my home with a lot of green in it.

    Thanks, Jan!

Now I am back on mood board 1. Perhaps change rug, nightstands and desk in mood board 2 and then see.

You know what I think after seeing your house? You don't need any help. Use your own Judgement : ) !

    It looks just great.

I might add if the room is huge? Build a great reach in closet. There's nothing wrong with them, and they are a great way to get both shelving , drawers and hanging in six or eight feet of wall. And yes.......lI do like both, but the second? Not a fan of the rug and dark bed. Jeesh, you asked. lol

You don't need ANYONE'S opinion, but your own.

Keep the rug light and neutral enough to accomodate seasonal changes on the bed. Or in art! The rest? Will work with anything. God made luxury white linens for a reason. Ditto lumbar pillows.....throws, quilts etc,

Ahhhhhh one thing? The wood shelf unit?

Turn it to a vertical hang? Please? Below? Humor me.

You're crowding the shadow box in white and a different orientation will be more interesting as well.

I think if I wanted to add color I would pick a different green than in your 2nd mood board.

I would want a green that felt similar to the blue

Something like the green below - not necessarily as a wall color, could be a wall color or could be incorporated with bedding, the area rug, upholstered items art or pillows.

The green in the 2nd mood board just doesn't feel right with the rest of the house and especially with the dining area blue.

KL I do have green plants in the other rooms and a dash of green in the kitchen. There is more green in the window, but you can't see it in the pics.

Jan, I would have to have the hooks repositioned for the shelf, that is a great idea though. I was always like you with my home Jan, keep things neutral. It makes it easy for a refresh, but I have had a love for mid century long before it became trendy. Mid Century was all about wood tones and the greens, rust and browns. I wanted to buy a mid century house in my neighborhood. There are many mid century homes, but my husband loved his garage so much, I never wanted to take that away from him. Almost all the mid century homes in my neighborhood only have carports. My husbands garage is 840 sq ft. My husband has passed away. I miss him dearly. Now because mid century is trendy the prices have sky rocket. They use to be the same price as my home.

This is how I was torn. I knew I like airy more nuetral, and I like the change of adding color, like the blue to match my other rooms, or go more bold and really have the colors of mid century, which I also love. I figured green ties in, because of plants and the tad green in my kitchen.

I am now leaning towards one. Everyone in my family does not like the green duvet either from cb2.

Jan- do you think the room is neutral enough in 1 that if I get bored and change out the rug and blue artwork, it will be Ok?

Thank you Jennifer. A lot are not loving the green duvet, including my family.

I like the chair in option 2 the best, do you think that chair would look good in option 1?

    Michelle41, Sympathies for your loss.

I like the terrazzo night stand. It almost looks like a piece of that candy I can't quite remember, a sort of chewy rectangle of nougat with bright colored bits in it. The neighbor lady gave it to me, as Mom didn't have candy in the house. It's fun to bring textures to the room that are almost edible-feeling.

Regarding the green, I feel green, blue, white, and straw-gold evoke very happy peaceful feelings for me, because they remind me of beautiful late spring and early summer days of new grass growing through last year's under a blue sky with fluffy clouds. Thanks for showing me the green. The particular green you chose is reminiscent of the green I remember from the 70s. Is that why you chose it?

So, honestly, I have to say I agree with Jan that you are doing really well on your own, better than I am. I love how bright and cheery your home is. And I really found it hard to choose between #1 and #2, because they both have elements I liked, and I'm not even a MCM fan. I do like the nightstands in #1 because they are so delicious. And I like the chair in #2. And I like the ottomans in #2. But I like the desk in #1, but right away the desk and chair would have the same legs and that might be too much. So, you are better off without my opinion. But with your taste, I think you could create a mix of #1 and #2 that would be very nice.

ORGANICALLY green. Vs. Beachier indigo .

Take the mud from the green.........( freshened below)

The key to having either? A neutral rug. Chunky jute is soft beneath the tootsies

White......with the fig green on the bed. Fold that duvet back over some blinding white quilt, shams, then add...

See what happens below. The rug is freedom to have EITHER feel. At will.

There's no conflicts..........and bedrooms are private, not public space : )

My parents bought their bedroom set in the 60's.. Give me 'brown out' of natural rich wood over the cold steel look of grays or metal ANY DAY!! To each their own!! Choose what YOU love not what some opinions say or some decorator selling CHANGE.

Note: edited pictures as you mentioned you decided on green.

Your other rooms are lovely, so I’m sure whatever direction you head will be nice as well. My two cents, although it could be due to the mood boards, as they often can feel contrived vs seeing a room, I’m not a fan of either design.

: ( No need to be a purist. All of life and decor is evolution, and re invention.

Plenty of mcm flavor throughout your home. Fresh takes for fresh times.

Diamond and Baratta reinvented Americana folk art.......courageously , and so boldly nobody dared go!

. Ralph Lauren made a small ( bloody ) fortune, updating English Country.....You hardly need a pic of layered tartan plaids and florals. Coco Chanel made granny's pearls look brand new....multiplied!!!!

Point? To thine own self be true. ONLY you can say what you want, and only you will be unhappy if you don't get it.

Lol Jan, the pics above, even a little too original for me. I completely get what your saying! But being true to myself I love the green bedding. I am just afraid everyone else will think it is ugly. I know it is for me, but I prefer to have something I love and others think, that's nice, maybe not my style, but nice. I will see what can be changed in design two and then decide which one.

Don't make me come there and hit you on your head : ) You get what YOU want. Your kids and family will sound off and then ? Not give two HOOTS.

Which is why you do not ask them.

it really is your decision. I like things from both boards. the main furniture is the same. I like the chairs and plants from the second but the desk in the first. I personally like to change my rooms up with the seasons. light and airy spring and summer... warm and cozy heavier look and fabric in the fall and winter. I keep furniture pieces the same but change bedding and accesaries including art when ever the mood strikes. even changeing a few things makes it feel like a new room.

    On mood boards:

That's what they are. A MOOD. They are never written in stone. They are a concept, a feel. They can evolve.

Their usefulness? To keep you on your chosen path. No different than planning a trip! Taking a trip, does not mean you never get off the main road for a few miles. Change a hotel reservation.

They aren't hard and fast commitments. until any item becomes one that can not be returned. Or that becomes an "oops....HATE that". Don't make them more than they are.

Anything white is FINE: ) Buy two white shams to go with it, add one green and fold that duvet back, exposing a lot OF THE WHITE. Add a lumbar, in an accent.

KIng beds are the elephant in the room. They always, more than any other size, beg you for an end point at the foot of that bed. That's your green duvet, folded to a third of that bed length.....and the white makes the green come to life. The fluff at the foot ,,,,,,no matter the color. Even in all white. The white is the base, you add the color and the texture.

You can't go anywhere, store or online...bedding or clothes where you won't find this palette in your face.

The indigo being pushed aside, and the earth/planet focus are factors. Big ones.

Oh, hey, michelle41, I was under the impression that you chose the green bedspread because it is a MCM color. Now that I understand you LOVE that color, I say go with it! Nothing in decorating makes me happier than colors that affect me in a happy way. Anything that really lifts your mood should have a place in your home.

Jan, I didn't realize that a mood board was just to set a mood. I thought it was supposed to be a collection of stuff too. Thanks for the education. In that case my photos are my mood boards. Here's one:

I've come to hate the phrase ''light and airy''. It stops so many people from being creative for fear of not getting an approval nod from some stranger whose own home probably is drab and boring.

Olive green is rich and paired with neutrals or coppers or muted blues and some yellows, it is striking and quite unique from todays same ole same ole popular decor schemes. My choice for Mood 2 caught my eye because of its restful and tasteful selection of coordinating pieces from the planter to the chair.

It looks so luxurious and classy.

Thanks Beth. I want two rugs and the way my room design is you either need a round rug, layered rugs or a cowhide rug by the chair. I noticed a lot of people are trying to get me to lighten it up. That is being worked on, but the mood I was going for was moody and dramatic. Too much light and airy changes the whole mood I was going for. But I do like mood board one that is light and airy, but mood board two was purposely meant to be different. I have the leather, the neutral rugs that whole look out in my front rooms, perhaps that is why I am drawn to mood board two. It is change. Change is always fun for me. You have to remember my old room was all light and airy.
