"Right now both white wires are connected and when the power is on the chandelier is just staying on"

You may have destroyed the dimmer with the "pop".

1. Disconnect the dimmer wires.
2. Along with the black and ground, connect one white wire to the light. Disconnect that white wire and connect the other white wire to the light. The wire that doesn't turn on the light is the one you want to connect to the light.
3. Put a wire nut on the white wire you won't use.
4. Reconnect the dimmer; replace if busted. If unsure, try a simple switch first. Remember that all dimmers are not compatible with all lights.
