Buying more china, because of course

last modified: 3 years ago

So back when I was outfitting our Maine house, I fell in love with these alphabet canape plates. I didn't want 26, so I just randomly chose the designs i liked best and bought 2 of each of those.

Fast forward this year and I got the idea to use them as de facto placecards, choosing the plate that matches the guest's first initial. So now I am filling in some of the gaps! Anthropologie no longer carries them so I'm buying them on the black market.

Here is a pic:

For some reason "U" (unicorn) is $$$ so I am not inviting any U-people. I don't think I know any U-people, but if I should meet one I will have to be stand-offish.

I guess that means Usher and I will be staying home...

Had to go to my spreadsheet (hey, it's complicated). I have J. I have 2 of them!

Oh, I love those! Whimsical and pretty, perfect. I have a very good friend named Ulrica, she is going to be very disappointed ;-)

I had to buy Z-zebra but I already had your real plate.

So clever! Love it! How do you come up with these ideas?

    I love my plate.

There are some listed on Poshmark if you haven’t checked there.

What happens if you invite two people with the same initial? Or three?!?!

I have 2 of some. If I know far enough in advance, i will buy more. Otherwise, I will have to ditch my least favorite initialed person.

    How very clever!!

    BLFenton,

My fave plate is the phases of the moon. This is place setting for a good M friend who came to dinner.

I know I said it before, but that is a fantastic place setting, just gorgeous.

Oh I like the name of that plate.

Zalco, it needs tortoise flatware. The flatware shown is generic stuff i bought for a large party years ago.

    Mtn, are you really non-U?

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked suero

    lol, am very much pro-U!

Mtn, I meant the whole shebang, the colors, the pattern, perfection. Tortoise flatware would be amazing.

    Literally laughed out loud.

OMG, I missed that completely! And I listened to an Ezra Klein podcast about status today.

LOL yes I knew you meant that, but re-reading it, I can see why you thought i was confused.

DD2 used to have the L lovebirds. She donated two moves ago. What a pretty place setting, Mtn.

Are you going to let your guests take their plates home as a souvenir? Great way to start decluttering. Not that they are clutter, no, no, no. But in preparation for moving.

If you have a U, u can give them the phonetic place setting of three plates: EWE

When I read posts like this, I realize what a lame host I am.

But now I want these plates! Anthro just has the best dinnerware. We have some dog plates from a few years ago. Different breeds…of course we have two of the Frenchie plates.

Those are so cool, and what a novel idea to use as placecards.

    Luckily I can't find an S, because I will only buy C, D, and S together.

Where is this Anthro black market?

Went to see what S was... DD2 had that one too.

Love those dishes. I'd want to buy the whole set!

    Beautiful, Sue!

So clever!!! I need to look up my initial (no, its not ”N”😂)

The M is really nice and while I don’t desire more china I still had to browse. The S is so pretty -

But then I started looking at the Floral plates and those could become dangerously addicting.

Ugh this idea is the best. I have a set of initial Christmas ornaments I use for place markers. My family has an over abundance of S people so it's kind of silly. Luckily I'm the only V in all my friend groups!

I did a fancy work dinner last year and hand lettered some really nice place cards. Two of the eight people had no idea what they were for. And they are important types! I was started to wonder if I was really that extra.

Four plates came today, 3 more on their way. (Eld, waiting on e,f,g iIRC)

Sue, The "Y" must be prized, it is more money. "Black market" = ebay, etsy, poshmark, mercari etc

Bpath, that is a cute idea to give them away! But these plates are for Maine, not CT, so they don't need to be cleared out/moved. That is why I am changing the bedroom here off the K into my "pantry annex." I did have all the dishes in CT last week for a dinner party. Yes, my DH packed up and moved service for 12 in 3 sizes of plates, and then moved them back. : )

    Fabulous! ❤️

    Looks beautiful mtn!

I've been eyeing this tortoise flatware. BBbN seems to have the same thing as PB (based on specs and image), but it is twice as much at PB

That set table is just beautiful. It looks stunning but effortless (in the best way).

Maybe I'll be you in my next life because I've already grown up.

Love, love these plates! Last night I used some self discipline, read the thread longingly …and moved on. Now tonight, it’s more of a struggle and i just may have to take the leap and start looking. The temptation is pretty strong!

I absolutely adore those plates. My kitchen has a plate rack that runs along the entire upper shelves (previous owner collected antique china). They would look so good, but I am resisiting.

OOh, I love spaces like that...what do you have there now? Sounds like an opportunity to collect one off stuff with some sort of theme?

Ooooh.....tall taper candles. I'm just noticing taper verses coach candles. I have tunnel vision when I start collecting....so pretty mtn! Creative! and Gorgeous place settings! You have a good eye.

Nicole, the first time I bought those 18" tapers, it was just trying to find something to get an order up to the free shipping minimum, and they were on clearance. When they came, I thought they were comically tall. Now I love them and have reordered them a bunch of times, LOL.
