Will this tile clash with colorful, eclectic chairs?

last modified: 3 years ago

We are installing this tile with natural maple cabinets in our kitchen. I had also wanted a set of bright, eclectic, colorful chairs for the kitchen table, but now I'm worried that the chairs will clash with this tile. Thoughts? The pattern does fade into the background when you stand up and aren't looking closely at the tile.I can't get the photos to attach to the post, so they are in comments below! Thanks!

I think you would be better off doing a plain white tile.

Is this tile for the floor or backsplash?

Personally, I don't think the tile looks good with the cabinet. I would choose something warmer. Your tile looks very "cool" .

Your tile will be there years longer than any chairs. They are the last thing you should try and 'match'.

Feels like two different decor styles. Choose another tile.

    Thank you!

@latifolia The tile is for the floor.

@susan49417 I haven't been able to take a photo yet that captures the warmer colors of the tile, but it looks much warmer in person than it does here.

Along the lines of what @Lorraine Leroux and @kandrewspa have said, this tile will be around for a long time so I want the option to change decor styles around it. That's probably the real question instead of the chairs -- how versatile is this tile and will it pigeonhole future design choices??

I do need a tile that will hide dirt, so white is unfortunately not an option. A more plain beige or gray would work though.

    How about slate tile?

It's darker, but it's plain and wouldn't be in your face.

Unfortunately, I need to go with a lighter tile. The ceilings are already low and there is enough dark natural wood in the open joists that anything dark would just close in the space too much.

Which is disappointing because I love slate!

@elcieg We don't have a table yet (or really anything else picked out), so we can be flexible. I just plan to keep this tile for several decades and I like colorful, so I want to pick something versatile.

Here are some more photos of the tile so that you can see the color.

This one is from the manufacturer.

If the first photo represents the true color of the tile, then I like it.

You can do colorful chairs, but keep the tile and maple cabinets in mind.

In your inspiration photo the chairs look like they belong in a children's playroom or an ice cream parlor.

Post a photo of your table. We need to relate the chairs to its style.

Is this new construction? If not, can you show us the room? Lots of factors to consider.

What is flooring that butts up to the future tile? What is your decor style, wall color, etc?

Full remodel of old construction, so unfortunately there are no photos to show.

This tile will cover all of 1st floor, so there will be no flooring butting up against it. Open concept kitchen and dining area, with laundry "closet" and bathroom.

I have very fews things picked yet. I want the base items (tile, cabinets, etc) to be versatile so that decor style can be changed around them in years to come.

@elcieg There is no table yet. This is all theory at this point 😊 So there is flexibility moving forward.

I agree that the chairs look like they belong in a children's play room -- I'm struggling to find a photo of exactly what I have in mind (lost all my old photos), but here are a few photos to get rhe ball rolling.

It’s so hard to say with just seeing one of the tiles … what is the name of it? I’m curious if anyone has posted pictures of it in their home. Even though other houses won’t be exactly like yours, it might help get an idea of it in a room(s).

It’s going to be a lot of gray, and quite a bit of movement, for the entire first floor. It definitely will dictate any future decor. You mention wanting warm, and it doesn’t look warm to me even with the bit of brown in it. Otoh, if you like slate a lot, it might work for you.

I didn’t see your inspo pictures before posting … what about doing a wood floor of some type?

I don’t see this tile being a good fit with the styles you like. It has a cool, modern feel. But again, hard to say with just seeing one tile.

I wouldn't use any of the tiles you showed in a kitchen nor in the entire home. I agree with Latifolia about using slate, or any dark colored porcelain tile. I don't think it's going to make your room feel closed in or dark. Lack of windows and poor lighting make a room dark. Or consider a medium toned oak floor for the entire home. That would work nicely with your maple cabinets and is a classic, time-tested flooring that will work with any decor style.

Thank you! I did a web search, and a hashtag search on Instagram, but couldn’t find it in any rooms.

I’m just concerned it’s going to be more of a cool tone than you want. It’s nice looking, but has a distinct look for sure.

"Farmette" in a rural area doesn't really go with a marble-look tile floor. Most farmhouses would have had a wood floor, even with exposed wood joists above. All of the inspiration photos you posted have wood floors. Another suggestions is Marmoleum, which a farmhouse would have used in the early to mid 20th Century over wood floors. Or a small white hexagonal tile floor.

    "Farmette". Love it!

Any mix and match color chairs will work, just suggest the legs be maple tone.

    Add a white farmette table.

IMO choose a simple no pattern porcelain tile and then do what ever you want. Where do you live? IMO tile floors are not wonderful to live with unless you are in a very tropical or hot climate. They are hard on the whole body and if you ever want to change them a huge amount of work I do not like those tiles for honestly not even a small space yet alone a whole home.

It looks like the tile we just used for our shower, which is this. Is that what you have, OP? It definitely looks warmer in real life than in pictures. Here are some pictures so you can see it in a bigger section. However, I'm not sure if it will give you the look you want. Your inspiration pictures show wood and saltillo tile, which is much warmer than this tile. Have you considered saltillo? I also think you can't go wrong with wood.
