I can’t center dining table on area rug. Rug or no rug?

I love this rug but because of the room size and table size I’m not able to center the table over the rug and iI feel like I’m breaking every design rule. I’m considering sending it back and going without a rug but I’m torn. Any opinion or advice is welcomed!

That gray wall will be coming out soon and I’ll be building an island that sticks out even with the counter edge from that wall so walk space is needed. Adding drapes and replacing the light as well so no swag will be needed. The highchair is going soon.

p.s. the clutter from my remodel is temporary. Please excuse the mess.

Looks like the no seating on kitchen side of table is intentional for ease of traffic flow? And the high chair is likely temporary until child can sit at table & no place else to put it right now. My guess is the table size is dictated by family size & seating needs, yes? If a smaller table isn’t an option, I would remove the rug. That should actually visually expand the space & remove the trip hazard walking out of kitchen. Looks like light is centered over table - can you extend chain so it hangs lower on table? Question - are the wheeled feet on table permanent? I’ve never seen that kind of arrangement on a dining table.

I think it would look better with no rug.

Forget rules. If you love the rug, then keep it. If it drives you nuts then don't. I like the idea of having a rug in that space whether it is this one or another one.

Table moved by 6 inches or so may help/not be as noticeable and also not infringe on pass through. To help, when high chair is not in use, place in far corner. Light can then hang centered, which will be a big improvement. If the table placement is more important remaining as is, I’d skip a rug and add interest/define the area with window treatments.

@KW PNW Z8 there is a lot of missing info on my part here. The gray wall that shuts in my kitchen is coming down in the near future and I’ll be building an island that comes out in line with the counter edge you see on that w all. The light will be replaced with a new one so iI won’t need to swag it and yes, those wheels come off the table legs. Those are just for moving heavy furniture. I just got done painting my floors so there was a lot of shifting of furniture happening. The table needs to be in that position to accommodate for the new island I’m building. And the high chair goes bye bye very soon as well.

If you go to a local carpet store and pick a carpet you like they can order a cut of that carpet and have it bound to the perfect width for your space.

@Maureen yes for the island I’m building soon that will replace that gray wall i need the space for walk through. I I will be adding ceiling to floor drapes on window and door there. I I think I’m going to return the rug. Thank you for helping!

I suggest to return it back. If possible, you could make some measurement and calculate then make a customeized rugs.

Perhaps try the area without a rug. It might work better. Here are a few of our dining room designs without rugs to show you it can work.

Yes I sent it back. Thank you.

Personally, I would want a rug under the table. I think that you need a rug either in a solid color or one with an overall pattern. The rug that you show works best with the table centered on the pattern. Why not try either of these options and see how you feel about the space. Good luck.

I might in the future get a seagrass one but the space is limited as that island will be extended into the walkway there this summer. And there is a heat vent by the wall so it can’t be up against the wall.

I think that was the right choice. Being right in the pathway to the sliding doors, the one side of the rug would take a beating.
